D. Abstraction WHAT IS IT?


(15 minutes)
A formal definition is a one-sentence explanation of the meaning of a word. When
you write a formal definition, first assign the term to a class and then explain how it
is different from other members of the class.

The following is the format in writing a formal definition;

1) TERM = CLASS + DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

OR

2) CLASS + DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS = TERM

Example:
Modems are devices that make possible the transmission of data to

Or
The devices that make possible the transmission of data to or from

a computer are called Modems.

What is it?
- Definite and Indefinite articles
Definite (the identity is known) like the, Indefinite (the identity is not known)
like a and an.

- Forms of the Verb “be” or auxiliary verbs


The verb be is irregular and it has 8 different forms;
be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been

- Adjective clause also called relative clause


Begins with relative pronouns like; that, which, who, whom, whose

- Participial phrases
An adjective phrase is headed by a participle (present and past participle)
Present participle (ending “-ing”)
Past participle (usually ending “-ed, -d, -t, -en, or -n”)

Note for the teacher: In the following activity you are going to
use nonverbal gestures. Sentences will be read and if you think
the sentence is grammatically correct, you will stand but if the
sentence is not grammatically correct just remain seated.

What is the opposite for correct?
If somebody commits mistake or gets wrong what will you say/or what will be
your reaction? Would you laugh at him/her?

Let’s pay respect to everybody, we should not laugh at the mistakes of others.
We should take care of others.

E. Generalization Just a wrap


(8 minutes) Following the lessons of the day, the students are going to do the following
activity.
(The students compose a song and a poem but they still focus on defining
terms and they observe correct grammar in making definitions)

Differentiated activities

Note for the teacher: This is a group activity. Those who have the passion in
singing, they will be in group 1 and those who love to write and love to deliver
speeches, they will be in group 2.

Group 1: Compose a rap song -


Compose a song and you are going to perform after. Half of
the group will do the singing and the other half will interpret the song.

Group 2: Write a poem and perform a speech choir -


All the members of the group will perform the speech choir.

Numeracy skills
Reminders:
For group 2, they will take note of the following. They will write a poem of
twelve (12) lines. The poem should consist of three (3) stanzas of four (4) lines
each. They will count well the lines of the poem they are to write. And during
the presentation they will divide the members of the group.

Literacy skills
The speech choir presentation enhances their literacy skills.

G. Assessment Directions: (an individual activity)
