launch in 1990, BREEAM has certified over a half of a million buildings and is now active in more than 70
countries around the world. Wherever they are, these buildings are immediately identifiable as having

PRODUCT VERIFICATION
Aim of the verification is to illustrate how the use of Schüco Aluminium Door Systems can influcence the
critieria of the BREEAM certification system in a positive way. The Schüco Aluminium Door System meets
the set requirements of the relevant topics of the certification system, thus adding value to the certification
process.
In principle the BREEAM System certifies only the total performance of a building and not products.
Therefore, Door Systems can achieve a total credit only in combination with several trades.
To achieve a BREEAM criteria fulfillment a wide range of technical data is necessary. Additionally to this
product verification, evidences can be provided by the producer. For this purposes the Window, Façade,
Door, Fire and Smoke Protection System related BREEAM Guide of Schüco International KG provides an
overview.

GREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATION SYSTEM

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a
framework for identifying, implementing and measuring green buildings and neighborhood design,
construction, operations, and maintenance. The LEED system was developed in 1998 for commercial
building industry and has been updated several times. Until today about 84,000 projects have been
certified internationally. For more than 15 years this voluntary certification process has set new standards
in the development and planning of sustainable buildings around the world.
The system relates to its standards for awareness, efficiency and healthy use both in commercial and
private buildings. During the certification in 9 categories points can be awarded, which lead to a
certification in the categories and 1.

Schüco FWS 50, thermally insulated self-supporting aluminium façade system
As a mullion/transom construction for multi-storey façades with an internal and external face width of 50 mm.

Design features:
The construction must be sealed from outside using aluminium pressure plates to suit the infill thicknesses.

Load-bearing structure:
The load-bearing structure of the façade construction consists of rectangular multi-chamber hollow profiles.
The load-bearing profiles are on the room side.
All profile edges are rounded.
The transom profiles are notched and overlap the mullions where they intersect, so that any moisture is reliably
drained away.
On multi-storey façades, all horizontal joints must be constructed using the joint connectors and joint tolerance seals
belonging to the system.
Appropriate system-based aluminium insert profiles and half profiles, as well as expansion joint seals, must be used
for vertical expansion and assembly joints.

Glazing / insert units:

All glazing, even in the insert units, lies in the same plane. The glazing gaskets made from weather-resistant, black
EPDM on the room side are of different depths in the mullions and transoms (6 mm offset).
Two individual gaskets made from weather-resistant, black EPDM, with a height of 5 mm, are positioned on the
outside. Cruciform gaskets made from EPDM must be used where mullions and transoms join.
In principle two individual gaskets and butyl tape must be used on faceted areas and for roof glazing.

Ventilation:
Rebate base ventilation and vapour pressure equalisation take place at all four corners of each module field into the
mullion rebate.
For field drainage and ventilation, appropriate openings must be made in the aluminium pressure plates, cover caps
and gaskets.

Profile face widths:

Mullion, assembly mullion, transom 50 mm

Profile basic depths:

Mullions 50-250 mm
Transoms 55-255 mm
Cover cap (mullion) 20 mm
Cover cap (transom) 15 mm

The profile basic depths must be offered in accordance with the structural requirements and the plan specifications.
However, note that a uniform mullion depth is required for all units. Furthermore, the transoms must have the same
depth as the mullions.

DISCLAIMER
Aim of the verification is to illustrate how the use of Schüco Aluminium Façade Systems can influcence the critieria of the BREEAM
certification system in a positive way. In principle the BREEAM System certifies only the total performance of a building and not
products. To achieve a BREEAM criteria fulfillment a wide range of technical data is necessary. The project team (e.g. design team
or Assessor) is responsible to declare the compliance with respect to the BREEAM criteria. This document does not contain any
detailed information whether the Schüco product system meets the requirements of the listed criteria. Within this verification the
background of a BREEAM certification evidence or a third party declaration is not intended. During a building certification process
the project team has the responsibility to declare the relevant product features by using specific and suitable evidences. For this
purposes the Window, Façade, Door, Fire and Smoke Protection System related BREEAM Guide of Schüco International KG
provides an overview.

This verification is a product of Schüco International KG. The distribution or publication by third parties is not permitted. The data
sheet is not a BREEAM certification document. The information is based on manufacturer's specifications. Despite a diligent
treatment of all information Schüco International KG can not make any warranties about the completeness, reliability and
accuracy of this information. The requirements of BREEAM can be interpreted differently and depend on the project and scope of
application. Therefore, Schüco International KG cannot accept any liability for the evaluation in terms of the BREEAM criteria. The
user of this product verification, the user / purchaser of the product and the consultant / planner, who is advising on this product
has the duty to check the product for the intended application at their own responsibility. If a new version of product verification is
produced, the previous version loses its validity.

PRODUCT VERIFICATION
Aim of the verification is to illustrate how the use of Schüco Aluminium Façade Systems can influcence the
critieria of the LEED certification system in a positive way. The Schüco Aluminium Façade System meets the
set requirements of the relevant topics of the certification system, thus adding value to the certification
process.
In principle the LEED System certifies only the total performance of a building and not products. Therefore,
Façade Systems can achieve a total credit only in combination with several trades.
To achieve a LEED criteria fulfillment a wide range of technical data is necessary. Additionally to this
product verification, evidences can be provided by the producer. For this purposes the Window, Façade,
Door, Fire and Smoke Protection System related LEED Guide of Schüco International KG provides an
overview.

AUTHOR
Drees & Sommer has been working on topics related to sustainable buildings for over ten years. The
company employs, among others, LEED Accredited Professionals, Licensed BREEAM Assessors and Auditors
