Content: SETS RELATION

DISCUSSIONS:

B. Venn Diagrams
Sets and subsets may be represented using Venn Diagrams. These are
diagrams that make use of geometric shapes to show relationships
between sets.
Consider the Venn diagram below. Let the universal set U be all the
elements in sets A, B, C and D.
Sets can be combined in a number of different ways to produce another
set.
A

C
D

Each shape represents a set. Note that although there are no

elements shown inside each shape, we can surmise how the sets
are related to each other. Notice that set B is inside set A. This
indicates that all elements in B are contained in A. The same with
set C. Set D, however, is separate from A, B, C. What does it
mean?
1. The union of set A and set B, denoted by A∪B, is the set whose
elements are contained in either Set A or set B, or both.

2. Let A and B be sets. The intersection of the sets A and B,

denoted by A ∩ B, is the set containing those elements that
belong to both A and B.

3. The Venn Diagram shows the Shaded part of set A and set B.
The shaded part represents the union of two sets.

sets:
1. E = {2, 4, 8, 16, 32} , F = {2, 32}
Find: a. E∩F ans {2, 32}
b. E∪F ans {4,8,16,2, 32}

U

2. R = {x| x is a factor of 24} , S = { } , and T = {7, 9, 11}

Find: a. R∩S∩T ans { }
b. R∪S∪T ans {2,3,4,6,8,12,7,9,11 }
