Describe the way matter can change
Learning Targets/Objectives
Students will be able to explain the three types of matter by completing a post test.
Summative if applicable
Subject Matter/Content to be taught in the lesson
Prerequisites
- N/A
New Key Vocabulary
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
- Packed particles
- Loose particles
- Very loose particles
- Melting
- freezing
- evaporation
Content/Facts
- What is a solid?
- What is a liquid?
- What is a gas?
- the different types of particles
- What does it mean to melt?
- what does it mean to freeze?
- what does it mean to evaporate?
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies
- start lesson by having the kids warm up to a song Matter Chatter (song for kids about
solids, liquids, and gases)
Development/Teaching Approaches
*teacher will use slideshow presentation during this*
1. start by review what a solid is:
a. a state of matter that does not change shape
b. it has tight particle ( have students curl up into a ball to show you)
c. a liquid can freeze to become a solid: give examples like ice and an ice pop
d. talk about the oobleck that we used in the beginning of the week
2. Review what a liquid is:
a. a state of matter that takes the shape of its containers
b. it has loose particles (have them spread their arms out but do not move)
c. a solid can turn into a liquid by melting
3. Review what a gas is:
a. a state of matter that does not have a shape and does not take up space
b. it has very loose particles (have them spread out their arms and move them)
c. a liquid can turn into a gas through evaporation
4. make an anchor chart with students while review the states of matter
Closure/Summarizing Strategies
- give the students a post test
- will be the same as the pre test but will include different pictures
Accommodations/Differentiation
- work on the post test with certain students and explain it to them in more depth
Additional reflection/thoughts
