Navigation 1 - Terrestrial and Coastal Navigation

“True navigation begins in the human heart. It's the most important map of all.”
-Elizabeth Kapu’uwailani Lindsey

Assignment:

1. Define navigation with your own words.

Navigation means getting to your desired place or destination. It is traveling from one place to
another and taking the best route possible. In science, it is about plotting coordinates of an
aircraft or ships, their distance and their course often using instruments like map, compass or
charts. As a cadet and future seafarer, navigation to me is like what driving is to a driver. It is
my profession, career and the thing that I will do for the rest of my life.

2. Describe the shape of the Earth and its surface.

The shape of the Earth is Oblate spheroid. According to scientist, It is not perfectly round but
spherical because it is slightly bulged at the equator and is flattened at the poles. This
happens due to the fast rotation of the earth on its axis. This causes a reduction on gravity
which in turn causes the land to bulge. Its surface features various landforms such as
mountains, valleys, and oceans.
3. Explain the difference between Latitude and Longitude.

Latitude and longitude are part of a system of coordinates that are used to determine the
location of any place on the Earth's surface. However, the key difference between them is
that Latitude measures the distance from the equator; while Longitude measures the distance
from the Prime Meridian. Latitudes are horizontal lines that measures the distance between
north and south and classifies the heat zones, while longitudes are vertical lines that
measures the distance between east or west and classifies the time zones.

4. Explain the difference between Prime Meridian and International Date Line.

They are (approximately) on opposite sides of the planet. The International Dateline is an
imaginary line over the globe that is used to mark the end of a day for all the people in the
world. Moving west and east across the line, makes someone to lose or gain a day. While
prime Meridian is one of the longitudinal lines that observes the central time which classifies
AM and PM to all other countries

5. Define difference of Latitude and Difference of Longitude.

Latitude and Longitude are known as geographical coordinates, which offer a systematic
network of lines. The Longitude contain 360 longitudinal lines that measure east-to-west
distance on the Prime Meridian. While the latitude contain 180 latitudinal lines on the Prime
Equator. Difference of Latitude refers to the angular measurement of the separation between
two points along lines of latitude. It helps determine the north-south distance between
locations. Difference of Longitude refers to the angular measurement of the separation
between two points along lines of longitude, indicating the east-west distance between
locations.
