The Virginia Commission on the Bicentennial of the American War of 1812

HISTORY OF THE WAR OF 1812
In June of 1812, the newly formed United States, a loose confederation of 18 states, declared war on Great Britain, one of the most powerful empires in the world. President James Madison gave several reasons for the declaration, among them: (1) strict and violent trade restrictions imposed by Britain because of its war with France; (2) impressment of American sailors into the British Navy; and (3) desired expansion by American leaders into the Northwest Territory, including parts of Canada, occupied by the British. Britains support of Native American resistance to U.S. expansion also was identified by the President and members of Congress as a reason for war with Great Britain. Thus began two-and-a-half years of increasingly acrimonious and brutal war that involved the United States, Britain, the British colony of Canada, and many Native American tribes. It was a war that tested American democracy and the relationship with Britain and Canada. The United States of America was the first modern democratic republic in the world, and 1812 was the first official war that the republic had ever fought as a nation. One result of the war positioned the United States of America as a force to be reckoned with on the world stage. the bicentennial anniversary of Virginias participation in the American War of 1812. Legislation creating the Commission was co-patroned by Delegate M. Kirkland Cox and Senator Stephen H. Martin. The Commission has planned commemorative events and activities over the next four years to heighten awareness and education about the war and Virginias involvement in the effort to challenge British authority.

COMMEMORATING VIRGINIAS INVOLVEMENT

The Commission has sanctioned several activities and events beginning in 2012 extending until 2015 to promote historical literacy about the War of 1812 in Virginia. All events and programs have been designed to reach a maximum public audience with focused, wellresearched historical accuracy. Public and private foundations and corporations have a unique opportunity to play a critical role in educating school students and the public about the War of 1812 a war with minimal focus in history books, but with a maximum impact on the development of a new nation and with modern effects still being realized. Sponsors are needed for the Commission to achieve its objective to enlighten the citizens of Virginia about the importance of Virginias role in the defeat of the British in the War of 1812 and engage citizens in celebrating Virginia history in general. Virginia students will receive history instruction that will complement Virginia SOLs and provide experiences their school divisions are unable to offer.
