The Impact of Social Media Usage on the Academic Performances of the Students in the New

Normal

Background of the Study

Social networks have had a major influence on students performance in recent years. These

networks create many opportunities and treats for students in various fields. Addiction to social

networking and it’s impact, on students academic prformance caused the researcher to design and

conduct this study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between social

networking addiction and academic performance of students in Iran.

According to Facebook user often time experience poor performance accademically. Similarly,

posit that social media is negatively associated with academic performance and also in the new

normal to the students. Internet addiction consequently gave rise in internet usage within the last

cauple of decades. Recommended that addicted users prefer using internet setting back their personal

and professional responsibilities which ultimately leads to poor academic performance.

Nowadays, in the world of connecting learning, the impact of social media on education is

becoming a driving factor. The world is becoming smaller, and by the use of technology such as

social media, the way we get an education is changing. Social media and education can complement

one another if used effectively. Social media is continually developing new educational possibilities

for students. Social media has many possitive effects on education. But the same has some negative

effects.

Social media help us to have communication with our families, friends, relatives, even

w/streamers and for us to be entertained. Social media also help students in an imortant way, because

of this they research their lessons.

Despite this, social media is also the reason why students academic performance has been affected

because they focus more on their social media accounts such as Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, etc.

In the Philippines today,, the social media has a big role to play in our society. Social media

has so much to give to Filipino people. It helps people find ways to discover recent news or

informtion. It connects family, friends, and people of like minded to share our emotions, ideas, and

expressions. For the business, it creates and expands new opportunities with digital advertising.

Facebook is the most popular social media that all Filipino use. Facebook has 83 million users

in the Philippines. That means 75% of total population is on this platforms.

Social media has a big factor that can affect people, not only in the Philippines butb alaso in

the world, especially young and adilts. Not only can it entertain and connect its users, it can also be

beneficial to individuals and society if utilized to inform us about our health, or imminent disaster.

Being able to access information and knowlegde from anywhere is the strength of social

media, especially for Filipino living in remote places. Where as educational opportunity was limited

before the internet and social media, we are now to learn virtually.

At the Capitol Resort Hotel in Lingayen, Pangasinan, a multi-sectoral group comprised of

representatives from the academic community, students, mainstream media practitoners, commercial

and government sectors, and police personnel commemorated “Pangasinan Social Media Day” on

Tuesday.

In recogniton of how crucial social media is to Pangasinenses, Governor Amado Espino, Jr.

proclaimed June 30 as Social Media Day in his province by issuing Executive Order No. 0058 S-

2015. This was the first time a province had formally proclaimed a day social media.

The event celebrates the contributions made by programmers and social media aficionados as

well as the growing understanding of the value of social media in Business, Government, Tourism,

and Education.

According to De Asis, social media has evolved into a channel for complaints as well as a

source of information for the police. An annual global celebration of social media's influence on

communication, Social Media Day honors the digital revolution.

Millions of individuals use social media frequently right now in Basista. It is how individuals

interact with one another, watch videos, and look for information on websites like Facebook, Twitter,

YouTube, Gmail, etc. Because social media aims to strike a balance between the educator's authority

and the students' active participation, it can also be beneficial for students when used in difficult

teaching strategies. It looks for data that is particularly beneficial to kids. They can look at concepts or

details that aid them in their projects, as well as in their schoolwork and extracurricular activities.

However, excessive usage of social media can result in addiction, which can impair students'

academic performance.

Scope and Delimitation

The study will focus on the impact of social media usage in academic performance, particularly on

Grade 11 Students in Basista National High School, which are the primary respondents, to ensure how

social media affects the academic performances of the students.
