INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Social Networking site is an online service for people who want social

relation to other people around the world. Social media are widely used

nowadays in our developing country. Most social media to provide interaction of

different people who share the same interest, likes and even real life

connections.

Online social networking presents both opportunities and risks to young

people. According to Davies and Cranston (2008), online social networking

presents many opportunities to young people by making it easier for them to

amongst other things; publish creative works to local and global audiences; stay

in touch and communicate with peers; find interact with people with shared

interests; organize and coordinates political engagements and action; for virtual

volunteering; and to engage in self-expression. However. Online social

networking can also expose young people to new risks. Risks from; inappropriate

content; commercialism and unsuitable advertising inappropriate or offensive

conduct on SNS; criminal activities such as identify theft; and inappropriate

contact (online and offline) from stranger - which may include grooming and in

the most serious cases, sexual abuse.

In other countries, North America has the highest social network

penetration rate in the world. While the global average penetration rate stood at

42 percent in 2018, North America’s social network penetration rate was at

around 70 percent. In the United States, 77 percent of population had a social

media profile. This means that there were around 209 million social network

users in the country in 2017. This figure places the United States as the country

with the third largest social network user base in the world, only behind China

and India. Projections are optimistic, showing a constant increase in the number

of social network users in the coming years. By 2022, the number of social

network users in the United States is forecast to increase to approximately 221

million.

Facebook is by far the most popular social network website in the United

States based on visits, followed by YouTube and Instagram. About 63 percent of

the U.S. population were using Facebook in 2017. Despite strong gains from

growing online markets, the United States still have the second-largest number of

Facebook users in the world. Mobile is an important part of Facebook’s leading

position in the market, as the social network is also the most popular mobile

social networking app in the United States by reach, engagement and audience.

China is the world's largest social network market. Its market composition

varies considerably from the rest of the world. Due to the Great Firewall of China,

as the Chinese government’s internet censorship project is commonly called,

Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, the leading international social-media players,

are all blocked in China. However, China’s social media landscape is not

incomparable with its western counterparts. Tencent’s Qzone, the most valuable

social media brand in China as of 2013, is a combination of Facebook and

Tumblr, where users share photos, leave messages and blog.

Micro blogging services Tencent Weibo and Sina Weibo ranked second

and third in the most valuable social network brand ranking in 2013. The initial

idea of micro blogging is similar to Twitter. Users are allowed to use 140 Chinese

characters in one post. As one Chinese character may transport more content

than a single English character, Weibo allows for more depth than Twitter. In

relation, micro blogging services were most used for the acquisition of social

news and information about interesting people such as entertainers or

commentators. Another commonly used social media form in China is instant

messaging. As of 2014, the penetration rate of instant messaging services in

China had ranged much higher than that of other social networks. At that time,

the most popular instant messengers in China were QQ and WeChat.

Both are operated by Chinese internet giant Tencent. In addition to their

already existing aptitude for mobile devices, recent instant messenger versions

have integrated vital social network properties such as sharing pictures, raising

once more the future of social media platforms

In the Philippines, Filipinos are very social by nature. With the current

advances technology, socialization has become highly technological and internet

based. Many filipinos know and use facebook along with other less favored social

networking sites and application like Twitter, Instagram Viber and WhatsApp.

Aside from socialization, all sorts of organization also utilize social media in the

Philippines. Goverment, Non Goverment, educational and business

organizations how have their own facebook and twitter accounts to sell and

advertise their merchandise.

Students today have begun to rely on the accessibility of information that

is available on the social media platforms specifically as well as the web in

general in order to get answer. This means that there is a reduced focus on

learning as well as on retaining information.

In addition, students are attempting to multi-task. They are trying to check

various social media sites while they study. This leads to reduced academic

performance. Besides, their ability to concentrate on their task at hand gets

significantly reduced due to the distraction that is brought by all these social

media sites.

The other negative effect on students is that they are spending too much

time on social sites, and much lesser time on socializing in person. In fact, there

is a lack of body signals besides other nonverbal cues, including tone and

inflection in case of social networking sites. Thus they cannot be considered as

an adequate replacement for any face-to-face communication. Not only this

students, who are spending a great deal of time on these social networking sites

are not able to communicate in personal in an effective manner.

These social media sites have become so popular in such a short time

because the information gets published in a fast way. This has actually created a

lax attitude for using proper spelling as well as grammar. In fact, the students are

unable to write effectively without the aid of the spell check feature of a

computer.

The kind of anonymity that is available on the internet has made many

students forget that they need to filter any information that they post. In, fact

many colleges as well as potential employers tend to investigate the social

networking profiles of an applicant before they grant any acceptance or an

interview. And there are many students who are not constantly evaluating the

content which they are published online. All this can lead to negative

consequences even later on in their life (www.business2community.com/social-

media/negative-effects-of-social-networking-sites-for-students-0311887)

THEORY FRAMEWORK

This study is anchored on theories propounded by Albert Bandura, B.

F.Skinner and Abraham Maslow. Banduras Social Learning Theory, as social

media made inroads into our living rooms, much of social learning has been

influenced by it, especially among the impressionable minds of children and

adolescents. Adolescents have the most impressionable minds, which explains

their ability to learn and comprehend and quickly pick up behavior from their

surrounding environment. Behavior patterns do not necessarily have to be taught

to them – they are highly receptive to learning through social networking. As

media and its various forms have gradually introduced into most households,

social learning theories have identified the influence of media in shaping the

social behavior of adolescent and children. Social networking sites are virtual

worlds for the internet users. Spending so much time in the virtual worlds affects

the academic learning abilities of young minds and the behavior of these youths.

It is from the constant exposure to and interaction in the virtual world as well as

through chatting and video sharing that students pick up many of their

characteristics traits. There behavioral traits, learned as young adults, continue

throughout adulthood. These are potential influences of social learning patterns

seen in grownups. B. F. Skinner Operant Conditioning Theory is based upon the

idea that learning is function of change in overt behavior. Changes in behavior

are the result of an individual’s response to events that occur in the environment.

In the case of students who are engaging in social networking sites, the reason

why students are addicted to modern social media is the stimulus or the

environment that drive them to practice such. Psychological theory of needs

theorized by Abrham Maslow pointed out that humans need to feel a sense of

belonging and acceptance, whether it comes from a large social group, such as

clubs office, culture, religious, group, professional organizations, sports teams,

gangs, small social connections or even social networking sites. They need to be

love and be loved by others. In the absence of these elements, many people

become susceptible to loneliness, social anxiety, and clinical depression.

Behaviorist theorized that learning occurs through interactions with the

environments. Two other assumptions of this theory are that the environment

shapes behavior and that taking internal mental states such as thoughts, feelings

and emotions into considerations is useless in explaining behavior.

Foreign Literature

Social media are web-based services that gives individual the opportunity

create either a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, add a list

of others to with they share a connection and view and transvers their list of

connection and those made by others within the system. Therefore, this study

was carried out with the aim of examining the impact of use of social media on

students’ academic performance in Malaysian Tertiary Institution. In other to

measure social media platforms a questionnaire was developed based on past

literatures. The independent variables includes: time appropriateness, time

duration, Nature of usage, Health Addiction, friends people connection and

security/privacy problems while the dependent variable was students academic

performance (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/323552945theimpactof

Socialmediaonstudentacademic).

The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms such as

Facebook has become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some time. Though it

all started has been a hobby for several computer literates individual has

changed to become a social norm and existence-style for students around the

world (Nicole, 2007). According to Nicole, (2007), students and teenagers have

especially recognized these social media platforms to be able to contact their

peers, share information, reinvent their personas and showcase their social live.

The Social media is rapidly changing the communication setting of

today’s social world. The emergent of social media is significantly influencing the

academic life of students. Institutions and academician are continually trying with

social media technologies hoping to excite critical thinking skills, collaboration,

and knowledge construction. Today social media has been accepted by higher

institution making it a platform where students connect with their instructors,

fellow students and other higher authorities across the board. This therefore

called for the study to explore and examine how social media has impacted on

students’ academic life (https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/f9a9/89df2990f6c4b

5fed15fe2f235c15f552f26.pdf).

This research effort is targeted at finding the effects of social media on

students’ performance. Therefore, the literature review discusses the relevant

research that is useful to the objectives of this research project. Several research

studies investigating the topic under review are found to be very recent. Since

most of the innovative features offered by social media platforms like Facebook,

Twitter, LinkedIn and many others are not that old and the phenomenon of the

use of these media has boosted recently with the introduction of revolutionary

features and platforms, a volume of recent research on its effects on students’

academic performance is available. Most of the studies chosen have been

published in the past four to five years.

Students’ academic life has moved to a different dimension since the

introduction of these social media networks and several studies have affirmed

that social media plays an important role on students in higher education

including the study conducted by Wheeler, Yeomans and Wheeler,(2008);

Foreign Studies

In the study of Ellison’s (2015) entitled “Studies on the Usage of Social

Networking Sites among College Students” provides very thought provoking

insights. According to this study, 85 % of the respondents use one or more social

networking sites. The extent of the usage of Social Networking Sites has

increased dramatically in the past two years and the usage of Social Networking

Sites as well differs considerably by age. Most of the respondents aging 18 and

19 years old use Social Networking Sites (95%), yet only 37% aging 30 years

and above utilizes these networking sites. The majority involving 18 and 19 years

old, have more than 200 friends while those aged 30 and above have more or

less 25 or lesser friends on these sites. Consequently Facebook is the most

commonly used Social Networking Site, with MySpace as the second choice. It

was also found that about half of these users utilize just one Social Networking

Site, having only one profile, and participate in one to five groups within Social

Networking Sites. Profiles of Social Networking Sites are fairly stable, with most

respondents changing them monthly or less often. The majority of the users of

Social Networking Sites spend 5 hours or less per week. Younger respondents

report spending more time than older respondents. It also emphasized that most

students (87%) put access restrictions on their profiles. Younger respondents

and females are most likely to do so

According to Raacke (2016) in his study entitled “The Effects of Social

Media on the Academic Performance of Nile University Students” found out that

college students around the age of 20 with accounts on Myspace or Facebook

use these systems “to keep in touch with old friends” (96.0%), “to keep in touch

with my present friends (91.1%), “to post/look at pictures” (57.4%), “to make new

friends” (56.4%), and “to locate old friends” (54.5%). But only 10.9 percent stated

Department of Education
Schools Division office I Pangasinan

that they used it “for academic purposes”, and only 12.9 percent listed their

courses on their profiles. Similarly, Michikyan, Subrahmanyam, and Dennis

(2015) used a mixed-method approach to investigate the relationship between

online academic disclosure (namely status updates about their academic

experiences) and academic performance for 261 students with an average age of

22 years. Thematic analysis of their posts indicated that 18 14% of their

contributions to Facebook were academic in nature. On the other hand, the

majority of students in Camilia, Sajoh, and Dalhtu (2013) used social media for

academic purposes (http:/dar.aucegypt.edu/bitstream/handle/10526//5414/Gina

%20Mowafy%20Thesis%20updated.pdf?sequence=1).

According to Ezeji (2016) in their study entitled “Effect of Social Media

on the Study Habits of Students of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education,

Owerri” revealed that social media rate of usage among students of AIFCE, was

very high. Almost all respondents in the survey indicated a degree of usage of

social media. 71% of students surveyed owned smartphones, while 25% did not.

Only 3.4% indicated that they did not know what a smartphone was. The socio

demographic data indicated that 31.7% were male while 68.3% were female.

19.2% were National Certificate of Education (NCE) students and 80.8% were

(BEd) Degree students. By year of study, 6.8% were first year students, 9.5%

were second year, 30.4% were third year while fourth year students were 53.4%.

The following relevant data from the study are presented graphically using tables

and charts. (https://waset.org/publications/

10008995/effect-of-social-media-on-the-study-habits-of-students-of-alvan-ikoku-

federal-college-of-education-owerri-).

According to Lenhart et al., (2014), about 57% of social network users are

18-29 years old and have a personal profile on multiple social media websites. In

a study by Pempek, Yermolayeva, and Calvert (2009), the amount of time spent

daily on social network sites varied greatly. However, an analysis of the data

indicated most participants spent approximately thirty minutes a day socializing,

mostly during the evening hours between 9p.m to 12a.m students spent an

average of forty seven minutes a day on Facebook. More than 50% of college

students go on a social networking sites several times a day (Sheldon, 2008).

Quan-Haase and Young (2010), found that 82% of college students reported

logging into Facebook several times a day. Younger students tended.

The study conducted by Owusu and Agatha (2015), entitled “Use of social

media and its impacts on academic performance of tertiary students” revealed

that majority of students in Ghana were engrossed in social networking sites. It

also brought to light that most users utilized these sites for chatting and

downloading purposes only which affected their academic performance

18

negatively. This finding corroborates the revelation of Mingle and Musah (2015),

that most respondents in their study experienced negative effects such as poor

grammar spelling, late submission of assignments, less study time and poor

academic performance. Though part of these studies affirmed some benefits of

social media usage in the academic life of students, it is necessary as educators

to be concerned about its negative effects which seem to be outweighing the

advantages as far as education is concerned in Ghana.

The research of Karpinski (2014) Entitled “The effects of social networking

site on students academic performance in lyceum of the Philippines – Laguna”

found that SNSs specifically Facebook usage is negatively correlated with Grade

Point Averages (GPAs) of its users. She observed that the GPAs of non-users is

relatively higher than the users of these sites. Also, the study found that 68

percent of students who used Facebook had a significant lower GPA than those

who did not use the SNSs. But the most interesting finding was that 79 percent of

Facebook users denied having any adverse impact of this usage on their GPAs.

It means that they are not aware of the fact that networking habits affects their

academic performance

In the study of ( ____) entitled “Effects of social media usage to the

school performance of the grade 12 Senior high school students” aimed to

know the positive or negative effects of social media usage towards students’

academic performance in Iligan City National High School. In this study, the

researchers had the sample size of 257 out of 739 Grade 12 Senior High school

students from Iligan City National High School as the respondents who were

chosen to be interviewed. The researchers concluded that there is no direct

relationship between using social media and school performance of the students,

since even though the students just use social media for entertainment they still

have high and good grades instead of looking for some information related to

their lessons. The researcher suggest that students must have control over their

usage of social media to avoid negative effects of social media towards

academic performance (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/330466568)

According to a survey conducted by Pew Research Center (2016) on the

“Impact of social media to student’s Lives, Academic performance” stated that

as of 2015 the largest social networking company, Facebook for example, has

1.49 billion active users and the number of users is increasing every year. As

part of the said survey, 72 percent of high school students and 78 percent

college students spend time on these social networking sites – Facebook,

Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Viber, E-mail, etc.  These numbers evidently

indicate how much the student community is involved in this virtual world of

networking.  Students prefer social media sites as reliable sources of information

because everything is a package.  A research conducted by Gagne sometime in

2003 defined media in general as some kind of components in a students’

environment that can stimulate them to study better.  Researchers also found

that the use of some types of social media has beneficial effects to students, not

only on their academic needs but also to help them establish a sense of identity

and build and enhance networking skills (https://www.baguioheraldexpressonline

.com/impact-of-social-media-to-students-lives-academic-performance/).

In the study conducted by Tamayo & Dela Cruz (2014) Entitled “The

Relationship of Social Media with the Academic Performance of Bachelor of

Science in Information Technology Students of Centro Escolar University Malolos

generation. It conquered the world by storm and became more popular to the

youth of most nations including the Philippines. This research aims to study the

relationship of Social Media in relation to the Academic Performance of the

students of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at Centro Escolar

University-Malolos. Among the one thirty eight (138) respondents drawn using

stratified random sampling there are 45 first years, 37 second and third years

and 19 fourth years. There are 102 males and 36 females participated in this

study. Seventy one (71) or 51.4% of the respondents have reached below

satisfactory grade average while sixty seven (67) or 48.6% students have

successfully reached the satisfactory academic performance from an average

grade. Sixty one (61) or 44.3% falls under the Occasional User of Social Media

while seventy seven (77) or 55.7% falls under Frequent User of Social Media.

This represents that there are more Frequent User of Social Media among the

respondents participated in this study. Students’ Prelim and Midterm Average

and their Social Media usage were correlated using Pearson ( r ) correlation and

evaluated that there is moderate significant relationship between Social Media

and the Academic Performance of the BSIT students of Centro Escolar

University – Malolos, Bulacan
