The Artemis system is only suitable for installation to Accord or equivalent type metering units on pneumatic
drills.
For any of the above formats, if independent motor drive of a 2 nd metering unit is required then a 2nd motor kit
is required..Having 2 motors driving 2 metering units would provide left and right shut-off on a seed-only drill,
OR independent control of 1 metering unit for seed and 1 metering unit for fertiliser (the PSi software can be
configured for either).
Due to design variations between drill makes and models, it is not possible to supply mounting brackets or
motor drive shaft components to guarantee universal fitment. The installer must arrange/provide:
- Suitable mounting bracket for the motor
- Drive shaft/coupling to go between motor and metering unit
- Any other necessary brackets i.e. module mounting, finger switch (area cut-out), fan speed etc
Installation photos in this manual are for general guidance only. For further help, installation photographs, as
they become available for specific drill models, can be accessed via the distributor section of the RDS website.

3 Motor Control Module (MCM) Components

This section details the components that are connected via the Motor Control Module(s). On a dual-motor
installation (ref. figure 2), the left motor control module is designated MCM-1, and the right motor control
module is designated MCM-2. In this case, make sure the sensor cables are routed to the correct module

3.1 Motor
Figure 10 : Motor mounting dimensions

Figure 11: Motor driving single metering unit

Remove the landwheel drive shaft, and mount
the motor drive [1] in line with the metering unit
input shaft. The metering unit must be driven as
per the land drive connection point otherwise any
half width clutch (if fitted) may not function
correctly.
Fit the shaft [4] to the appropriate side of the
gearbox .
Shorten or otherwise modify the existing
landwheel drive shaft/coupling as necessary, to
connect the motor drive shaft to the metering
unit. Ref. Fig. 10 for motor shaft dimensions
NOTE: Ensure sufficient space to install the Seed Shaft
Sensor (section 3.1.2).
Route the cable back to the MCM.

Figure 12: Motor driving two metering units

A suitable motor shaft is available on request.-
please contact the factory

If Updating the machine from a land wheel

system, it may be worth marking on the
metering unit which direction the metering
unit turns when the land wheel is being driven
forward.

3.1.1 Motor Connections

Each motor is connected to a Motor Control Module (MCM) as shown.
NOTE: The motor cable is approx. 1.8m (6 feet) long. Please ensure that the proposed mounting positions for
the motor(s) and MCM(s) allows the cable(s) to reach!

3.2 Seed Shaft Confirmation Sensor

The Seed Shaft Sensor provides confirmation that the motor is driving the metering unit.
The 2nd sensor is only required for single motor/dual metering systems.
Fit the magnet carrier [9] on the metering unit input shaft. Mount the sensor [6] adjacent to the magnet by
suitable means. Note the magnet-sensor position as shown in fig. 14. Route the cable back to the MCM-1
connection box [5].

On a dual-motor system, a 2nd Seed Shaft Sensor (or pair of sensors) are wired into the MCM-2 connection
box.

3.3 Priming Switch

Kit Ref. P/ART2/SINGLE - Sub Kit: K/ENT/SWCH
The priming switch manually operates the motor to dispense product for calibration purposes.
Mount the switch [8] where convenient for calibration. Please refer if necessary, to the installation leaflet
included in the kit . Route the cable back to the MCM-1 connection box [5]. On a dual-motor system, a 2nd
priming switch is wired into the MCM-2 connection box.

3.4 Area Cutout / Tramline Advance

Kit Ref. P/ART2/SINGLE - Sub Kit: K/CUT/OUT/013
The Area cut-out sensor is used to stop/start the motor when the drill is lifted/lowered. It can also be used for
tramline advance signal, simplifying the installation.
Figure 15: Typical mounting – Area Cutout Switch
Mount the switch where it will be triggered as the
drill is lifted/lowered, usually by some part of the 3-
point linkage. Please refer if necessary, to the
installation leaflet included in the kit.
Route the cable back to the MCM-1 connection
box [5].
Normally, the area cutout switch also signals the
tramline advance, and is wired into the MCM-1
Connection Box (ref. figure 1, 2).
Alternatively, it functions solely for the area cutout
function and the tramline advance signal is
provided independently by the Bout Marker
Sensors via the HBM Connection Box.
NOTE: On a front-mounted tank system, the cable is
routed back to the connection box on the drill
which in turn is connected to the HBM module
mounted on the front tank (please refer to the
wiring chart for front tank systems – section 7)
For front tank systems, ensure the ‘C/O SELECT’ setting on the instrument is set to (HBM).

18
PRO-SERIES ARTEMIS - VARIABLE RATE DRILL CONTROL

3.5 Forward Speed (Radar) Sensor

Kit Ref. P/ART2/SINGLE - Sub Kit: K/TGSS/MK3/UK
NOTE: The sensor extension cable is approx. 5m long. Please ensure that the proposed mounting positions for
the sensor and the MCM junction box to which it connects, allows the cable to reach!
Please note the following points before installing the radar sensor on the drill:
 It should be mounted such that the sensor-ground distance does not vary significantly, e.g. when
lifting/lowering the drill. Changes in the beam angle/distance will affect the calibration.
 It is best mounted facing away from where mud/soil will be disturbed or thrown up. It will not work properly
if caked in mud.
 It will work best when the radar beam points onto undisturbed soil.
 Anything that moves or vibrates in the radar beam can generate a false speed signal.
The sensor should ideally be mounted such that the lens is between 30 cm (12”) and 100 cm (39”) above the
ground and is near to the vehicle’s centre of gravity. This will minimise the effect of the vehicle roll and pitch.
Please note the beam spread shown in figure 16b.

The suggested position is either on the link arm facing forward between the tractor wheels, or at the front or at
the rear of the drill facing rearward. Please refer if necessary, to the installation leaflet included in the kit. Route
the cable back to the MCM-1 connection box [5].
Figure 16: Typical mounting – Radar Sensor

NOTE: To maintain installation simplicity and ease of drill transfer to alternative tractors, Interfacing with existing tractor
mounted radars is not advised. Forward speed input from GPS is not technically an option.

Mount the sensor 19] either through the tank wall
(requires a 27 mm hole) or inside the tank. If the Height-Adjustable bracket
sensor is mounted inside the tank, the height can if
necessary, be adjusted e.g. to suit different
products. If a 2nd hopper level sensor is required,
this is also connected into the HBM connection box .
NOTE: Each hopper level sensor requires a 10k resistor
[22] connected between the signal wire (green) and
the +V wire (red) in the connection box (ref. Section

4.3 Tramline Mechanisms

RDS does not supply tramline mechanisms. Only solenoid or motor-type mechanisms fitted with limit switches
can be operated. The tramline outputs operate as follows;

Output HBM Harness Terminal Normal Bout Tramline Bout

Tramline 1 (Right): +V Black – PL1-3 PL2-6 0V +V
Tramline 1(Right): -V White – PL1-4 PL2-7 +V 0V
Tramline 2 (Left): +V Grey – PL1-7 PL2-10 0V +V
Tramline 2 (Left): -V Orange – PL1-8 PL2-11 +V 0V
TL1 output only = Assymetric right sequence
TL2 output only = Assymetric left sequence
TL1 + TL2 outputs = Symmetrical sequence
Using the multimeter, first test the tramline mechanisms to determine how they work. There is one of three
options:
(i) Motor-driven – power to open / power to close (divertor valve).
(ii) Solenoid – Power to open / Spring close.
(iii) Solenoid – Spring open / Power to close.
Dependant on the type of tramline mechanisms fitted, then re-connect the existing wiring into the HBM
connection box (or in the case of a front-tank system, back to the Implement Connection Box), as follows;
NOTE: Electrical Interference Suppression
When interfacing with solenoids, they must be adequately suppressed to prevent the possibility of electrical
interference damaging the RDS control system. Use a continuity tester between the +V and 0V wires prior to
connection to determine if a diode is already fitted. RDS Solenoid leads have diodes fitted in the solenoid cap
and no further action is required. However, if you are using other means of connection, please refer to the RDS
leaflet ref. Pt. No. S/DC/500-10-187 included with the kit.

4.3.1 Motor-type Tramline mechanisms

NOTE: The mechanisms must have limit switches.
If the motors operate in the opposite direction to that required, then simply reverse the connections to the

Bout Marker Sensors are not included in kit ref. P/ART2/SINGLE
Fit your choice of magnet [10, 11] on the Bout Marker Arm. Mount the sensor adjacent to the magnet by
suitable means, such that the magnet will trigger the sensor when the arm is fully lifted/retracted. Note the
magnet-sensor position as shown in fig. 21.

NOTE: The blue magnet must be attached using a stainless steel set screw with a fibre washer between the magnet
and the mounting point.
Route the cable back to the HBM connection box, (or in the case of a front-tank system, back to the Implement
Connection Box). The sensors are wired in series. Both sensors have to close before the tramline count
advances.

5 CAN Modules and Power Supply

Kit Ref. P/ART2/SINGLE + P/ART2/2ND (as applicable)

5.1 Power Supply

Route the Tractor Power Cable [23] direct from the battery to the rear of the tractor (or to the front for a front-
mounted hopper).
Route the Implement Power Cable [25a] to a point central to the CAN modules. Mount the Fuseholder [25e].
Cut the red wire to length and connect to the fuseholder using terminal [25f].

5.2 Module Mounting

The modules and connection boxes are sealed and it is not essential to mount them inside another enclosure
for protection against the elements. However, a box-type cover or enclosure will offer more protection from
pressure washing or physical damage, and make the installation look neater.
The CAN modules [2] should if possible, be grouped centrally along with the connection boxes [5]. It is
recommended to mount them on a single mounting plate, that is grounded to the chassis via a ‘Master
Grounding point’. Mount them using 4 x M5 Set Screw [13], Flat Washer [14] and Nut [15].
MAKE THE CONNECTIONS ONTO THE STUDS WITH FLAT WASHERS [14] EITHER SIDE OF THE
TERMINAL(S) AND M5 NUT [15]. Ensure all connections are tight and that there is no possibility of them
shorting together. It is advisable to coat the studs with petroleum jelly or an equivalent.
MCM
The Motor Control Module (MCM) should be fitted so that the motor drive wires can be connected onto the
module, and the motor encoder csble can connect onto the MCM loom (ref. Section 1 schematics). Fit the
module so that the sticker is facing out and cable connection points are at the bottom.
NOTE: The motors direction of rotation will be dependant upon which way it is connected to the MCM, if the
direction of rotation is incorrect simply reverse the red & black motor connections.
The yellow/green wire fitted to the motor should be connected onto the grounding point (ref. Section 3.2.3).
HBM
The Tramline Control Module (HBM) should be fitted in close proximity to the MCM. The HBM loom can then
be easily connected to the main instrument loom (ref. Section 1 schematics). Fit the module so that the sticker
is facing out and cable connection points are at the bottom.
Figure 21b: Typical Module Installation (Carre)

Figure 21c: Typical Dual-Motor Module Installation (Kerner)

5.3 Grounding and 0V connection

NOTE: Fan operation particularly in dry conditions, can generate extremely high-voltage static charge.
Therefore it is ESSENTIAL to install the Yellow/Green ground wiring and Black 0V wiring as instructed, to
help protect the system against Electro-static Discharge (ESD).

Providing the modules are located in close proximity to each other (e.g. less than 500mm), then the Module 0V
wires [25b] and Motor earth wires can be connected directly to a ‘Master Grounding point’ (ref. figure 22).

If the modules are NOT located in close proximity to each other (e.g. MORE than 500mm), then the Module 0V
wires [25b] are still connected to the ‘Master Grounding point’.
However, you MUST ALSO establish a reliable chassis grounding point next to each Module. The Motor earth
wire is connected the grounding point. A separate grounding wire [24] must be connected between the
grounding point and the 0V stud on the adjacent Module (ref. Figure 23).

Establish a reliable ‘Master Grounding point” on the chassis using M5 Set Screw, Washers and Nut
[13,14,15], and connect the master 0V wire using terminal [25f]. Using a multimeter, check continuity
between the wire terminal and chassis is acceptable. The grey rectangle in figure 22 suggests a metal
mounting plate for the modules but can also be the chassis of the drill.
Using the black wire [25b] and crimps [25g] supplied, connect separate 0V wires between the ‘Master
Grounding point’ and the 0V stud on each module.
Using the red wire [25c] and crimps [25g] supplied, connect separate +V wires between the Fuseholder
[25e] and the +V stud on each module.

6.1 MCM / HBM Wiring Harness and Connection Boxes

NOTE: All connection boxes [5] are identical for the MCM-1, MCM-2 or HBM. The MCM harness [3] and HBM harness
[17] are labeled for easy identification.
Before the connection box is installed onto the MCM/HBM harness, the free ends can be cut to the desired
length to suit how far away from the module the connection box will be installed. This customisation process is
applicable to both MCM and HBM harnesses.
Below the harness can be seen at full length, the scissors indicating where the harness will be shortened. The
harness is cut and the connection box installed. 1.2m is shown for example, the exact length will be dependant
upon the specific installation required.
