• responses to social, political, and cultural change

- we'll discuss three aspects

• inclusive citizenship & participatory governance
• citizenship
• relationship between an individual and the state and in turn is entitled to its protection
• it implies the status of freedom with accompanying responsibilities
• citizens have rights, duties, responsibilities and that are denied or only partially extended to
aliens <those who are naturalized> and other non-citizens (Source: Britannica)
• Citizen -> duty of allegiance
• State -> duty of protection
• inclusive citizenship & participatory governance
• a kind of governance theory that puts emphaisis on engagement through
deliberative practices
• how we can we aprticipative as members of society
• we owe allegiance to the state- respecting its laws and fulfill our
responsibilities and excercise rights
• accepting responsibilities of being a citizen
• accepting our rigths as a citizen
• citizen rights n responsibilities
• Rights:
• right to life
• right to worship (practice religion and culture as ong as they are abiding state laws)
• rights to pertaining to cultural views
• socio-economic rights (right to have food, clothing, shelter, work, etc.)
• having standard of living
• political rights (protection before the law, participation in political life, access to
judicial system, having a fair trial)
• due process
• Repsonsibilties;
• owe allegiance to the state (upholding constitution, obeying authorities, and
expressing rights responsibly)
• contribute to its development n welfare
• cooperate with authorities
• exercise rights responsibly
• Participatory governance- democratic mechanisnsm that intend to make citizens participate
in public policy making proicesses (Springer Link)
• 1987 Constitution- rights of peple to effenctive n reasonable participation of all
levls of social, political, n economic decision-making
• (solving the problems of people by creating initiatives, programs, etc. to provide the
needs of the people. These are democratic mechanisms to meet the needs of the
people)
• ex. 888 citizen's hotline and complaints center (we can put our complaints
through here, especially corruption complaints)
• ex. Pasig (we <3 Vico Sotto) raised Php 1.2 B for students and teachers'
laptops, also provided wifi hotspots to download modules (acc. to Rappler)
• Ideally it is both in the local and state level
• Projects in healthcare, education, or transportation improvements
• making public officials accountable

• 2nd aspect in response to social change:

• social media
• video- "How can social media impact the government": https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=wDT1c89uazk
• are we entering a world where its harder to be in an autocracy than to be in democracy
• How can social media impact the government? Clay Shirky
• "any medium that allows people to synchronize ideas, coordinate actions,
and document results has an inherently political dimensions..."
• "every democrazcy has by definition a group of people who are eager to and
planning to take over...If that doeesnt exist, the democracy has stopped
being a democracy"
• one or more groups who believe they have a better way of doing things
• Schaffer, 2021- social media has been a tool for raising your voice and
calling out corrupt actions, "racism isn't getting worse, it's just being filmed"
(more people are raising awareness regarding discrimination in the hope of
change for the victims of injustices)
• Social media has a lot of impacts in different countries today

• third aspect: social movements
• a loosely organized but sustained campaign in support of a social goal, typically either the
implemetnation or the prevention of change in society's structure or values
• They result from the more or less spontaneous coming together of perople whose
relationships are not defined by rules or procedures but who merely share a common
outlook on society
• social movememtns differ or vary in size but they are all collective, they come together to
fulfill a common social goal- its people coming together spontaneously (ex. BLM, A
(Asian) LM, cancel culture: public shaming, etc.)
• cancel culture- withdrawing support due to unethical practices
• Ex. Racist remarks, sexism, anti-terror bill, left-wing vs right-wing politics
• community pantry, stop asian hate, BLM, Junk Terror Bill (Activism is not terrorism <3),
body positive movement, Duterte palpak, the asan ang pangulo, oust Duterte , #asan ang
gobyerno
• result from more or less spontaneous coming together of people because of
the same desire to be given justice and to promote awareness so that change
may happen
• people coming together because they all desire social justice or awareness

✅ AGREE TO DISAGREE❌: even if you dont agree on some issues its ok, you can still be friends
even if your stances are different
- be aware of whats happening (tip: read the news from different sources and stances <ex. right wing n
left wing>)
