1. (a) (i) Define the term coefficient of viscosity and write its dimensional formula.

(ii) Briefly explain how is the coefficient of viscosity of a liquid and that of

(iii) The relative velocity between two layers of water is 5cm/s. If the
perpendicular distance between the layer is 0.2 cm, find the velocity

(c) Two identical drops of water are falling through air with a steady velocity
of 10cm/s. If the drops combine to form a single drop, what would be the

(d) (i) State Bernoulli’s theorem and write its expression. (02 marks)
(ii) What is the main importance of the Bernoulli’s theorem? (02 marks)
(iii) A pitot tube is mounted on an aeroplane to measure the speed of the plane.

2. (a) (i) Show that the doppler effect in sound is asymmetric. (03 marks)
(ii) A stone was dropped in a well of depth h containing water. The time taken
for an observer on the top of well to hear the sound when strike water was

(b) A piano tuner stretches a steel piano wire with a tension of 800N. The steel

(d) A diffraction grating produces a second order maximum at 50.6◦ to the
normal when being illuminated normally with light of wave length 644nm.
Calculate the number of lines per millimeter of the grating. (03 marks)

3. (a) (i) Oil is sprinkled on sea waves to calm them. Why? (03 marks)
(ii) Two spherical soap bubble of radii 30mm and 10mm coalesce so that they
have a common interface. If they are made from the same solution and
the radii of the bubbles remain the same after joining together, calculate
the radius of curvature of their common surface. (04 marks)
(b) A cube is subjected to a pressure of 5 × 105 N/m2 . Each side of the cube is
shortened by 1%. Find

(c) An electric fan is switched on in a closed room. Briefly explain what will
happen to the air in the room with respect to its temperature. (02 marks)
