1. Determine the Laplace transforms of the following functions:

(a) x(t) = 3e−3t u(t − 2) (b) x(t) = |t| e−3|t| .
2. (a) Let the Laplace transforms of signals x(t) and y(t) be X(s) and Y (s), respectively.
Find the Laplace transform of each of the following functions, and relate the region
of convergence with those of X(s) and Y (s).
Rt
i. x(t) ∗ y(t) ii. −∞ x(τ )dτ iii. tn x(t)
(b) Assuming that the region of convergence for X(s) contains the jω axis, prove that
Z ∞ Z ∞

|x(t)|2 dt = |X(jω)|2 dω.
−∞ 2π −∞

3. (a) Suppose that input x(t) and output y(t) satisfy the following differential equation
ẏ(t) − y(t) = x(t).
i. Suppose that this system is anti-causal, i.e. h(t) = 0 for t > 0, where h(t) is the
impulse response. Find h(t).
ii. What are the eigenfunctions of the system? Is this system stable?
(b) Consider the following transfer function (i.e. the Laplace transform of the impulse
response) of a linear time-invariant system:
2s + 1
H(s) = .
(s + 2)(s − 1)
i. Suppose that this system is stable. What is the region of convergence for H(s).
Find also the impulse response of the system.
ii. Give a differential equation satisfied by the input and output of this system.
4. The discrete-time Fourier and inverse Fourier transforms are given by
X∞ Z π
jω −jωn 1
X(e ) = x[n]e , x[n] = X(ejω )ejωn dω.
−∞

(a) The z transform, X(z), of x[n] is the Fourier transform of an exponentially weighted
version of x[n]. Using this, derive the formulae for the z transform and the inverse z
transform.
(b) What is the region of convergence? When do both the Fourier and z transforms exist?
When does only the z transform exist?
5. Using the z transforms of an u[n] and −an u[−n − 1], find all possible inverse transforms of
z2
X(z) =
(z − 13 )(z − 2)
whose the region of convergence is not known.
