Four options (A – D) are given as possible answers to the following

questions. Choose the answer and write only the letter (A – D) next to the
question number (1.1 – 1.3)

straight line for time t as shown below. Object P experiences an
acceleration of a and object Q an acceleration of 2a

P Q
F F

If the amount of work done by net force F on object P equals W,

the amount of work done on Q will be …

A W.

B ½ W.

C 2 W.

D 4 W. (2)

1.2 Which one of the following forces is absent in an isolated system?

QUESTION 2

A rock of mass 1, 6 kg, is at rest on a rough horizontal surface as shown in

the diagram below. When the rock if slightly pushed, it rolls at a velocity of
0,2 m·s-1 to the WEST.

B
The rock reaches point A with the same velocity of 0, 2 m·s-1 and then moves
down a rough 0, 5 m distance along the slope A - B.

2.1 Draw a labelled free-body diagram for the rock while it moves along the
slope A – B. (3)
2.2 Define the term non-conservative force. (2)
2.3 Give a reason why this is NOT a closed system. (1)
2.4 Calculate the kinetic frictional force experienced by the rock as it moves
from point A to B, if the coefficient of kinetic frictional force between the
rock and the surface is 0,12. (3)
2.5 Using ENERGY PRINCIPLES only, calculate the velocity of the rock at
point B. (5)

QUESTION 3

A 75 kg block is initially at rest on the ground. It is then lifted vertically

upwards at a constant acceleration of 0, 65 m.s-2 by using a light inextensible
string. Refer to the diagram below. Ignore the mass of the string, rotational
effects and the air resistance.

3.1 Name one none-conservative force acting on the block. (1)

3.2 Draw a labelled free -body diagram for the block while it moves upward. (2)
3.3 Calculate the work done on the block by the gravitational force when the
block has reached a height of 12 m. (3)
3.4 State the work-energy theorem in words. (2)

QUESTION 4

The diagram below shows a bullet of mass 20 g that is travelling horizontally

at a velocity Q m.s-1. The bullet strikes a stationary 7 kg box and becomes
embedded in it. The bullet and the box together travel on a 2 m long rough
horizontal surface X - Y before coming to a stop at point Y.

4.1 Use the WORK-ENERGY THEOREM to calculate the magnitude of the

velocity of the bullet-box system immediately after the bullet strikes the
box, given that the frictional force between the box and the surface is
10 N. (4)
4.2 State the principle of conservation of linear momentum in words. (2)
4.3 Calculate the magnitude of the velocity Q m.s-1 with which the bullet
strikes the box. (4)
4.4 The bullet experiences a force F when it strikes the box. How is the
magnitude of the force experienced by the box compares with that
experienced by the bullet? Write only GREATER THAN F, LESS THAN
F, or EQUAL TO F. (1)
4.5 Write down the physics law which can be used to explain the answer for
QUESTION 4.4 (1)
4.6 A 500 kg car accelerates on a smooth surface from 10m.s -1 to 30m.s-1
