1. Calculate the length of the diameter or radius of each circle, rounding your answers to two significant figures.

a) Area = 15cm² r= 15 = 2.2cm

b) Area = 12cm² d = 2 12
π = 3.9cm

c) Area = 70.1cm² d = 2 70.1

π = 9.4cm

2. Calculate the shaded area of the following shapes, rounding your answers to two decimal places.

a)
Area of rectangle = 12 × 10 = 120cm²

4cm Area of circle = π × 2² = 12.566…

10cm
Shaded area = 120 − 12.566 = 107.43cm²

12cm

b) (πR²) − (πr²)

3cm (π × 6²) − (π × 3²) = 84.82cm²

12cm

3. A trundle wheel is a device used to measure distance. Each revolution of the wheel measures a
distance of 1m. Calculate the area, in centimetres squared, of the wheel, rounding your answer to
one decimal place.

1m = 100cm

Radius = 100
2π = 15.9154…cm

Area = π × 15.9154² = 795.8cm²

4. A 2 pence coin has a diameter of 26mm. A 5 pence coin has a radius of 0.85cm.
Calculate the total area, in centimetres squared, of 19 pence using only 5 pence and 2 pence
coins. (You must use more 5p coins than 2p coins.) Leave your answer in terms of π and round the
coefficient of π to three significant figures.

26mm = 2.6cm

19p = 3 × 5p and 2 × 2p

Area 5p: 3 × π × 0.85² = 2.1675π

Area 2p: 2 × π × 1.3² = 3.38π

Total area of 19p = 5.55πcm²

Total area of 19p = 12.6πcm²
