I.SUBJECT MATTER: The Six Trigonometric Ratios

II. OBJECTIVES: At the end of doing all learning activities, the students will be able to:
1. Illustrate the six trigonometric ratios: sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent.
2. Calculate the value of six trigonometric ratios of the given reference angle of a right triangle
3. Show diligence in doing activities and solving problems about trigonometric ratio.

III. MATHEMATICAL CONCEPT

Trigonometry is a branch of Mathematics that deals with the study of triangles and relationships between their
sides and the angles between these sides. The word “trigonometry” comes from the Greek words trigonon
(“triangle”) and metron (“to measure”). One of the topics in Trigonometry which is basic but very important is
the trigonometric ratios because it relates the sides of a right triangle to its angles. Specifically, the ratios of
two sides of a right triangle are related to an angle. To solve a triangle means to find the length of all the sides
and the measure of all the angles.
Definition: Trigonometric ratio is the ratio between the sides of a right triangle given one of its acute angles as
the reference angle.

1. Sine ratio: 4. Cosecant ratio:
hypotenuse opposite leg
adjacent leg hypotenuse
2. Cosine ratio: 5. Secant ratio:
hypotenuse adjacent leg

3. Tangent ratio: 6. Cotangent ratio:
adjacent leg opposite leg

IV. SELF- LEARNING ACTIVITIES

A. Investigation Activity: Triangles of Different Sizes
I. Objectives:
1. Recall the concepts of similar triangles.
2. Investigate the ratio of the sides of similar right triangles.
II. Materials: foot ruler, protractor, graph paper/math notebook and pencil (coloring materials optional)
III. Instructions
1. In a graph paper/math notebook, draw three similar right triangles ∆ABC, ∆DEF and ∆GHI in different
sizes in such a way that; m∠C = m∠F = m∠I = 63⁰.
1. Find the measure of the second acute angle of each triangle.
2. Use a ruler to measure the sides of the triangles to the nearest tenths in centimeters.
3. Find each of the following ratios for all the three triangles:
a. the ratio of the leg opposite the 63⁰ to the hypotenuse
b. the ratio of the leg adjacent the 63⁰ to the hypotenuse
c. the ratio of the leg opposite the 63⁰ to the leg adjacent to 63⁰.
5. Record your findings in the given table below

6. Using a scientific calculator, determine the value of

a. sin 63⁰ ________ b. cos 63⁰________ c. tan 63⁰_________
7. Compare the values taken using the calculator with the values from the
table, then complete each statement below.
a. The ratio leg opposite the 63⁰ to hypotenuse is the approximate value of ________.
b. The ratio leg adjacent the 63⁰ to hypotenuse is the approximate value of ________.
c. The ratio leg opposite the 63⁰ to leg adjacent the 63⁰ is the approximate value of ______.
