Galvanic Cells – Electrochemical Cells

 when redox reaction occurs, energy released is normally

lost as heat
 by separating half-reactions and making oxidation and
reduction occur in different places (different half – cells),
can cause electron transfer in a wire through an external
electrical circuit
o energy of reaction harnessed

Galvanic cell: cathode is positive

anode is negative

 electrons flow in external circuit from anode to cathode

 in solution: cations (+) move to cathode

anions (–) move to anode

 salt bridge: connects two half cells (maintains

electrical neutrality)

Comparison:
 Electrolytic cell: cathode – negative (reduction)
anode – positive (oxidation)

 Galvanic cell: cathode – positive (reduction)

anode – negative (oxidation)

 chemical change  electrical energy

ex. Zn0 / Zn2+ // Cu0 / Cu2+

 check electronegativity values to determine which cation will be reduced

(i.e. gain e-)

Net Cell reaction

Zn(s)  Zn2+(aq) + 2e-
Cu2+(aq) + 2e-  Cu(s)
Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq)  Zn2+(aq) + Cu(s)
ex. Sketch Mg0 / Mg2+ // Fe0 / Fe2+ (red)
Table  Fe2+ is reduced

Anode half-cell reaction

Mg(s)  Mg2+(aq) + 2e- Eoxo = -2.37V

Cathode half-cell reaction

Fe2+(aq) + 2e-  Fe(s) Eredo = -0.44V

Net Cell reaction

Mg(s)  Mg2+(aq) + 2e-
Fe2+(aq) + 2e-  Fe(s)
Mg(s) + Fe2+(aq)  Mg2+(aq) + Fe(s)

Assignment:
Sketch and label the following electrochemical cells.
Indicate their half-reactions as well as their net reactions.

i) Pb0 / Pb2+ // Ni0 / Ni2+

ii) K0 / K+ // Ca0 / Ca2+
iii) Cu0 / Cu2+ // Al0 / Al3+
