Class Exercise 2 LSD of Pile - 2024 UPTD
Design a cylindrical pile of 14 m length and 400mm in diameter to carry a permanent and
variable actions of 𝐺𝑘 = 800𝑘𝑁, 𝑄𝑘 = 400𝑘𝑁 shown in Figure 2 using EC 7. DA1- C1 and
DA1-C2. Determine the load carrying capacity of a driven pile with the corresponding degree
of utilization. Note the unit weight of concrete is 𝛾𝑐 = 25𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 .
Solution
Action
𝜋×𝐷 2 𝜋×0.42
Self-weight of the pile 𝑊𝐺𝑘 = 𝛾𝑐 × ( 4
)× 𝐿 = 25 × ( 4
)× 14 = 43.98𝑘𝑁
𝐴1 + 𝑀1 + 𝑅1
𝐴2 + 𝑀1 + 𝑅4
𝑉𝑑 = 𝛾𝐺 (𝑊𝐺𝑘 + 𝑉𝐺𝑘 ) + 𝛾𝑄 𝑉𝑄𝑘 = 1.35(46.98 + 800) + 1.5 × 400 = 1703.4kN DA1 − C1
𝑉𝑑 = = 1703.4kN DA1 − C1
𝑉𝑑 = 1367kN DA1 − C2
𝛾𝑚 = 𝛾𝜑 ; 𝛾𝑐 ; 𝛾𝛾 = 1
𝑄𝑢 = 𝑄𝑏𝑢 + 𝑄𝑓
It is recommended by researchers to take the 𝜑 value of the last layer where the pile is rested
and total depth of the soil. 𝑁𝑞 is determined from the chart. 𝑁𝑞 = 134
𝐿 14
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒, 𝜑 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑙𝑎𝑦𝑒𝑟 = 390 , = = 35
𝐷 0.4
𝜎̅ = 17 × 2 = 34𝑘𝑁/𝑚2
𝜋(0.4)2
𝑄𝑏𝑘 = × 18492 = 2323.8𝑘𝑁

DA1-C1
𝛾𝑏 = 1.0; 𝛾𝑠 = 1.0
DA1-C2
𝛾𝑏 = 1.3; 𝛾𝑠 = 1.3
DA1-C1
𝑉𝐷 ≤ 𝑅𝐷 = 1703.4 ≤ 2226
1703.4
∪ % =∪= × 100% = 76.52%
2226
DA1-C2
𝑉𝐷 ≤ 𝑅𝐷 = 1367 ≤ 1719
1367
∪ % =∪= × 100% = 79.52%

The degree of utilization is less than 100% therefore the design is certified okay!!!!!
