1. Read the following extract carefully and then answer the question that follows.

New Study Says Social Media Doesn’t Make Us Antisocial

In recent months, I’ve done my best to adopt healthier social media habits: I limit use to an hour a
day, I’ve unfollowed pages that make me feel insecure about myself, and I stay off of my phone just
before going to bed or right upon waking up. Why? Because I want to combat the negative effects
that come with social media use. Multiple studies have shown that excessive social media use can
5 cause increased feelings of loneliness, diminish self-esteem, and lead to antisocial behaviour. So,
determined to take control of my life again, I’ve stopped scrolling endlessly through Instagram,
Facebook, and Snapchat feeds.

I’m certainly a happier and healthier me, since making these changes, that is without question.
However, one of the so-called negative effects of social media use is in question. New research
10 from McGill University rejects the claim that social media use leads to antisocial behaviour
and says it might have the very opposite effect. This study, “Hypernatural monitoring: a social
rehearsal account of smartphone addiction,” suggests that social media makes us hypersocial as
opposed to antisocial.

As it turns out, we may have been looking at social media use the wrong way: those who appear
15 addicted (or are actually addicted) to their iPhones and social media apps may not be antisocial
after all. Instead, their obsession is rooted in the desire to watch others and be monitored in return,
as explained by Professor Samuel Veissiere, a cognitive anthropologist who studies the evolution
of today’s culture. According to Veissiere, we’ve evolved into a social species that demands and
requires constant input from others.

20 Veissiere and his colleague, Moriah Stendel — both researchers in McGill’s Department of
Psychiatry — reached this conclusion after reviewing current research on the harmful use of
modern-day technology (e.g. iPhones) through an “evolutionary lens”. Doing so allowed them to
discover a common theme: these users display and attempt to fulfill the human desire to connect
with others.

25 While it may appear as if we’re trading one negative in for another, Veissiere explains that this is
meant to serve as some good news: “There is a lot of panic surrounding this topic. We’re trying
to offer some good news and show that it is our desire for human interaction that is addictive, and
there are fairly simple solutions to deal with this.”

Veissiere said in a recent interview that “we need to start having a conversation about the appropriate
30 way to use smartphones”. He recommends adopting healthier social media habits, such as turning
off push notifications and scheduling time to check your phone. Again, I can tell you from personal
experience that adopting these habits will positively affect your wellbeing and mental health.

2. Read the excerpt below carefully and then answer the question that follows.

Goldfields was of no interest to Pearl. She said no Duran had ever left Kingston except by plane.
“What they keeping that old mausoleum for?” she shrugged.

Even the Cohon house on Oxford Close seemed ancient to her.

The trouble was that the house Pearl wanted was in Beverly Hills. Here the homes of the affluent
5 overflowed from the densely populated Liguanea Plain and inched up the hills that rimmed and
looked down in old Kingston. Beverly Hills at any cost, she decided, but preferably a mansion in
Montclair Drive. They had been married for two years when the right thing came on sale. She
heard about it at a party at Morgan’s Harbour.

The problem was how to get Adam to the house and convince him he had discovered it for himself.

10 It stood well in from the road above a lawn that scooped up from the scraggly rocks which were
softened by Wandering Jew and plumes of deep pink bougainvillea cascading from behind them.
Even from the road one could glimpse the pool at the side of the house, particularly at night when
it was floodlit. It was precisely what she needed.

“Don’t you love it!”

15 “Mm. Nice.” He stretched across and squeezed her fingers dreamily. “Imagine that kind of
money, eh?”

“Well actually is not all that much considering everything.”

He chuckled. “How you know how much it is?”

She was careful. Playfully she countered.

20 “People anxious to sell now, Adam. They just running out of the country. They abandon what
they can’t sell. People taking next to nothing now for mansions.”

“Mm,” he agreed with her but his attention was wandering and he drove slowly on. “Look at that
top-heavy thing up there. Lord. Gross, eeh? People build some monstrosities, boy.”

“Well that one we saw back there was nice.”

25 “Yeh. Let’s have it,” he chuckled.

“While we’re up here, why don’t we walk through?”

He pulled to the side and stopped, looking out over Kingston. He seemed to have forgotten she

and his mouth smiled at her below unfathomable eyes, “Oh forget it,” she shrugged. “I just thought
we were here anyway.”

“Were we here anyway? Or we come to look at that house? Is you wanted drive in the hills.”

“Oh come on, Adam.”

“You wouldn’t listen. You never listen when I come straight.”

“Lord, God, Pearl, even if we coulda buy a place so we couldn’t maintain it. Is a army of servant

During the periods of lockdown and the suspension of face-to-face schooling, it was discovered
that many high school students had taken to smoking and vaping. The youth group at your church,
mosque, synagogue or temple has decided to do something about this worrying trend. You have
been asked to design a plan to reach teenagers who have been affected by these practices to convince
them to cease and desist. You are expected to share this plan at the next youth group meeting.

In an essay of NO MORE than 300 words, outline the details of your plan in which you justify

• TWO message points linked to EITHER pathos OR ethos appeal which you will use to convey
your message to the target audience

• TWO reasons why your youth group should undertake the intervention to reach the affected
teens

• TWO digital media technologies which you would use to communicate with your target
audience.
