How many fish did the girls catch?
How many fish did the boys catch?
By how many fish was the boys’ catch fewer than the
girls?
Find the sum of the fish caught by all five people.
We can solve the problem.
By subtracting: 5 – 2 = 3
Emily caught 3 more fish than Jose.
By adding: 5 + 6 = 11
The girls caught 11 fish.
By adding: 3 + 2 + 4 = 9
The boys caught 9 fish.
By subtracting: 11 – 9 = 2
The boys caught 2 fish fewer than the girls.
By adding: 3 + 5 + 2 + 6 + 4 = 20
Five people caught 20 fish.
