1 Choose any two of the following passages from the Qur’an, and:

(a) briefly describe the main theme(s) in each passage [4]


(b) briefly explain the importance of these themes in a Muslim’s life today. [4]

(i) 101. To Him is due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth: how can He have a son
when He has no consort? He created all things, and He has full knowledge of all things. 102. That
is Allah, your Lord! there is no god but He, the Creator of all things: then worship Him: and He
has power to dispose of all affairs. 103. No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision:
He is above all comprehension, yet is acquainted with all things. (Sura 6.101–103)[surah an’aam,
Allah in Himself]

(ii) 37. Among His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Adore not the sun
and the moon, but adore Allah, who created them, if it is Him you wish to serve. (Sura
41.37)[surah fussilat,Allah in Himself]

(iii) 1. Say: He is Allah, the one and only; 2. Allah, the eternal, absolute; 3. He does not beget, nor
is He begotten; 4. And there is none like Him. (Sura 112)[surah ikhlas, Allah in Himself]

Ans 1]a]i] these verses 6.101–103 are taken from surah An’aam. This is a makki surah and it is under
the theme of Allah in Himself. This passage denies all false beliefs about Allah having any consort or
any children. It explains Allah’s power and Allah’s oneness and how He is the one and onlyGod,
how He has ultimate power on us, how He is our creator and the creator of every other thing.

All this power and creations are His signs. The earths and the heavens. His oneness, how he doesn't
have any children. He is the one and only. The passage furthermore highlights His power and
authority upon us. How He knows every single thing which is happening or which has passed or
even the time which is coming. He knows what is in the hearts of the people, the things that no one
has ever told to anyone, the doings which have been done behind someone’s back. He can see
everything but we cannot see Him, not even a slight vision of him. There are his creations that are
his signs and other blessings he has given us. He is alone worthy of worship and there is no one like
Him.“ Say: He is Allah, the one and only;”{112.1}

Ans 1]b]i] the importance of this theme is to stop us from worshiping any false God. it keeps us on the
straight path and knowing Allah’s signs and his power upon us creates fear in peoples heart and
they repent to allah. Knowing he knows our everything, what we are doing, what we are thinking
and what will happen in future, this creates a thought in our mind to stop doing anything bad
behind anyone's back as Allah knows everything. This helps us to repent to him and ask for
forgiveness for our previous mistakes and bad doings.

Knowing about Allah’s power on us helps us to repent towards him, stops us from doing any type of
shirk or any type of doing that can upset Allah almighty. He alone is worthy of our worship. He is so
high and supreme that even angels worship him day and night and ask for forgiveness day and
night for our doings. {157 words}

Ans 1]a]ii] This passage 41.37 is Surah Fussilat. This surah is a makki surah under the theme of Allah
in Himself. This passage discusses the signs of Allah and his creation. This passage tells about Allah
being one and only God and he should be worshiped and not his creations. Many people
misunderstand Allah’s creation as God’s and worship them. Such as sun worshipers and star
worshipers. This passage denies all other false God’s and asks us to worship only Allah. “. To Him is
due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth: how can He have a son when He has no consort?
He created all things, and He has full knowledge of all things.” {6.101}

This passage furthermore discussed about Allah’s power. The signs are used as a symbol of his power
so only He is meant to be worshiped,no-one is equal to Him.
and it also explains his control over mankind, the order and cycle of the sun and the moon are God's
signs for humankind. (169 words)

Ans 1]b]ii] the importance of this theme is that we came to know about Allah’s beautiful creation.
This passage gives us knowledge about Allah being the one and only God and how the creations are
his signs and not Gods. It helps us to know who the real God is and He is alone worthy of worship.

Only He can fulfill our needs, so Muslims should be careful to pray and fast and any other thing.
We should fulfill our obligation to Him, and turn to Him only. In a world where there are lots of
distractions, this surah could remind Muslims that they should always remember their Creator as He
is the ultimate authority over their affairs. We should realize that we need to look to one God for
our answers, rather than looking to create things for guidance, and also ponder on His signs. (144

Ans 1]a]iii] This passage surah Ikhlas. This is a Makki surah. The theme of this surah is Allah in
himself. This surah is also recited in daily prayers. This surah is specially revealed to explain
tawheed. This surah has been revealed during the quraish dispute with Muhammad in answer to a
challenge over the distinguishing attributes of God, Muhammad invited them to worship.

This passage furthermore describes how God is the only one deity and that He does not have a
beginning nor end. He is the Absolute and holds all power. He is meant to be worshiped and surely
we have to return to him. He is most- high , the most supreme. “That is Allah, your Lord! there is no
god but He, the Creator of all things: then worship Him: and He has power to dispose of all affairs.”
{6.102} (141 words)

Ans 1]b]iii] importance of this main theme is stressing the Oneness of Allah so that there is no
confusion between people of false god’s or take other people or created things as their Lord, so they
should not replace God with things like famous people/saints, or place or anyone or anything
alongside Him. The passage clearly mentions the oneness of Allah and gives answers to those who
believe in other gods or believe in gods other than Allah.

This passage encourages people to the right path and strengthens muslims believe as they know
more about their one and only god, Allah Almighty. This strengthens muslims believe and brings us
to the right path. This surah reminds us every day the oneness of Allah as we recite it in our daily
prayers. We should always stay on the right path and worship only Allah as he is worthy of our
worship. (148 words)
