FIRST AID

Introduction to Basic Life Support


• Shock and Resuscitation
- apply a fundamental knowledge of the causes, pathophysiology and management of shock, respiratory
failure and arrest, cardiac failure or arrest, and post resuscitation management.

The principles of basic life support (BLS) was introduced in 1960. Specific techniques have been revised every 5 to 6
years.

Basic Life Support


-an emergency procedure that consists of recognizing respiratory or cardiac arrest or both the proper application of CPR
to maintain life until a victim recovers or advanced life support is available

Scope and Limitation


Basic life support does not imply medical treatment and is by no means a replacement.

First Aid – is an immediate help provided to a sick or injured person until professional medical help arrives or becomes
available.

Roles and Responsibilities of First Aid


1. Bridge that fills the gap between the victim and the physician
- It is not intended to compete nor take the place of the services of a physician.
- It ends when services of the physician begin.
2. Ensure safety of her/herself and that of bystanders.
3. Gain access to the victim
4. Determines any threat to a victim’s life
5. Summon advanced medical care as needed
6. Provide needed care for the victim
7. Record all findings and care given to the victim

Objectives of First Aid


1. To alleviate suffering
2. To prevent added/further injury to the victim
3. To prolong life

Legal Concerns
1. Consent
2. Duty to Act
3. Standard of Care
4. Negligence
5. Abandonment
6. Confidentiality

Characteristics of a Good First Aider


1. Gentle – should not cause pain
2. Resourceful – should make the best use of things at hand
3. Observant – should notice all signs
4. Tactful – should not alarm the victim
5. Emphatic – should be comforting
6. Respectable – should maintain a professional and caring attitude

Hindrances of Giving First Aid


1. Unfavorable surroundings
2. The presence of crowd

Diseased that cause concern


1. Herpes – is a viral infection that causes eruption of the skin and mucous membranes
2. Meningitis – is an inflammation of the brain or spinal cord caused by viral or bacterial infection
3. Tuberculosis – I a respiratory disease caused by a bacteria
4. Hepatitis – is a viral infection of the liver
5. HIV (Humane Immune Deficiency Virus) – is a virus that destroys the body’s ability to fight infection. The
resultant state is referred to as AIDS ( Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)

Bleeding – is the loss of blood escaping from the circulatory system
