People Who

as a job:
Who
Are
They?
We asked three musicians what was happening in their lives
at the moment. Here is what they said.

William Samson, 1

My philosophy is that, if I only have one life, I should use

my time doing what I love the most. I’m also happy when I
am drawing and writing, but music is now the heart of this
lifestyle.
I dreamt of becoming a professional drummer when I was
13, but when I was 18, my dad bought me a recorder. Now
I write my own music. I listen to classics such as Nick Drake
and The Beatles. I am a big Beatles fan.
A lot of people don’t realise that money is something that
most musicians worry about. It’s always difficult to find a job
that allows you to go on tours and record new albums.

A She always forgets the words to her songs.
B She is tired.
C She feels nervous and worried.

Adele, 2

One of the things I enjoy most about my career now is that

my main team is the same.
I had a lot of people working together on my last album: Max
Martin, Sia, Bruno Mars. With Bruno, we wrote the song “All
I Ask” in 48 hours. We just stood around the piano until we
found something that fired. I’m only touring for the fans now,
to see the people that changed my life. I don’t like to tour as
I am always nervous and worried about whether I am good
enough. That’s tiring. And I sometimes think I am going to
forget my lyrics.

Armin van Buuren, 3

The idea behind the last album, Embrace, was to show the
importance of different cultures, different views and different
instruments. On the first song of the album we have a jazz
trumpet player, Eric Vloeimans. He’s one of the best trumpet
players in the world. And I’m super excited about the track,
because no jazz musician has ever worked with a trance
artist. There’s a lot of experimenting on this album.
It is exciting to work with new sounds, real instruments! It
gives soul to music.

Imagine our world without music. What would

it be like?

mentioned.

an early age, comfortable with technology and social media

Teens and News in the Age of Social Media

Teens growing up today don’t have to wait for their news. A Google search is all they need to
find out what their favourite sports team or celebrity is up to. Teens aged 13–18 (who are part
of Generation Z) spend about nine hours a day on their phones. And believe it or not, a large
portion of that time they are checking the news.
Most teens get their news from apps like Snapchat and Twitter. Isabella, 15, reads Cosmo
and Buzzfeed Snapstories every day. She sends the news that is interesting to her friends using the
messaging service inside the app. She can’t remember the last time she read a newspaper.
Some teens still watch TV – like Thomas, 14. He likes watching the evening news to learn about
current events. He also follows news on Twitter and Snapchat, but only if he is bored. Nora, 16, reads
a newspaper once a week, but still gets most of her news from Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram.
Using social media as the main source of news is fast and convenient. On the other hand,
anyone can post information without checking the facts or where it comes from. Many
celebrities have used social
media to create scandals. Justin
Bieber was reported dead on
Twitter only to tweet to his fans
a couple of hours later that the
story was fake. In fact, 31%
of children aged 10–18 have
shared a news story that they
later found out was wrong, and
only 44% said they could tell
the difference between a real
and a fake story. Over 31% said
they pay little or no attention to
where the stories come from.

A Right B Wrong C Doesn’t say

The media industry is trying to keep up. Snapchat has signed contracts with VICE, The New
York Times and Vogue to give interesting news to its teen users
(22% of app users are aged 13 to 17).
The company makes sure there is no fake news on the app. Teen Vogue has started
discussing serious news because teens are already talking about world
events, such as the attack during Ariana Grande’s
concert in Manchester.
They are trying to understand what is going on in
the world and to find their own place in it. And
if Teen Vogue doesn’t give them the news, they
will go to other places on the Internet.
So it turns out, teens today aren’t spending
hours only looking at photos and chatting
with friends. They’re using their phones to stay
connected with the world and share important stories
with each other.

think the media have too much power today?

Visit the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle
for a taste of medieval architecture.
The most popular lake in Scotland is Loch
Ness, of course. Around one million people
come here every year to try and see the

Wales
Wales is ideal for trekking. You can start by
exploring Snowdonia National Park, which
takes its name from the highest mountain
in the region, Snowdon.
On the northeastern side of the National

and 1287 by Edward I. The views across
the mountains of Snowdonia and the River

You can fly to Belfast from London in about

attraction is the Titanic Quarter, where the
famous ship was designed and built.
Take a car and go on a road trip from
Belfast to Londonderry. On your way, don’t
miss the greatest natural wonder of this
area – the Giant’s Causeway. It is an area
of 40,000 rock columns, the result of a
once active volcano.
