If they
work together, how many minutes will the job take them?
ANSWER:
Mr B does the job in 1/15 job per minute
His Son can do the job in 1/30 job per minute.
Together rate = 1/x job/min
1/15 + 1/30 = 1/x
Common Denominator = 30x
2x + x = 30
3x = 30
x = 10
So, together they can do the job in 10 minutes.

5. An auditorium is 1/2 full. After 25 people in the audience left, the auditorium is 3/8 full. What is the
seating capacity of the hall?
25 people represents 1/8 of the capacity, C.
(1/8)C = 25 > Seating capacity is people.
Check: (1/2)(200) = 100 people initially in auditorium
25 people leave > 75 people remain
75/200 = 3/8
6. Hubert can run 10kph, whereas Banjo can run 8kph. If they start at the same time from the same
point and run in opposite directions, how far will they be after 10 minutes?
Always remember this relationship: Speed = Distance/ Time.
Since they traveled in opposite direction after 10 mins, just add their individual distances//then Dtotal
= 1.67 + 1.33 = 3 km..

8. At a certain printing plant, each of m machines prints 6 newspapers every s seconds. If all machines
work together but independently without interruption, how many minutes will it take to print an
entire run of 18,000 newspapers?
Algebra: If 1 machine prints 6 papers every s seconds, it prints 6(60/s), or 360/s papers per minute.
There are m machines, each printing at that rate, so each minute this plant cranks out
360m/s papers.
To find how many minutes it takes to print 18,000 papers, we divide 18,000 by 360m/s:
Check by plugging in easy numbers: Say there are 1,000 machines (so m = 1,000), and each prints 6
papers every 60 seconds (so s = 60).
If that were true, then each machine would print 6 papers per minute, and the plant would crank out
6,000 papers per minute.
At that rate, it would only take 3 minutes to produce 18,000 papers.
Do those numbers work? Does plugging in 1,000 for m and 60 for s give us 3 with the expression we
came up with?
9. Travelling at 15kph a doctor would arrive 1hr early. Travelling at 10kph he would arrive an hour
late. What average speed for him to arrive on time?
12kph.
He arrives one hour early at 15kph. This means that the distance is 15*(x-1), where x is in how long
he’s meant to arrive.
Similarly, the distance is 10*(x+1).
Solving 15*(x-1) = 10*(x+1) gives us x = 5.
He’s meant to arrive in 5 hours.
Which means that (using the distance equations) he’s at 60km from his destination.
Hence, he should go at 12kph (60/5) to arrive right on

A) How much water must be evaporated from 170 liters of a 75% solution of salt inoder to obtain an
85% brine solution.
B)There is 60 gallons of 50% solution of glycerin and water.How many gallons of water must be added
to such solution inroder to reduve the glycerin concentration to 12%.
C) How many gallons of 40% salt solution and 80% salt should be mixed inorder to have 40 gallons of
50% salt solution?
D) How much water must be added to 100 liters of denatured alcohol 90% pure to dilute into 75%
alcohol content.
How much water must be evaporated from 170 liters of a 75% solution of salt in
order to obtain an 85% brine solution.
:
Let x = amt of water to be evaporated
write an equation for the amt of salt in each solution
.75(170) = .85(170-x)
127.5 = 144.5 - .85x
.85x = 144.5 - 127.5
x=
x = 20 liters to be evaporated
:
You can check this, the amt of salt remains the same, (only the % changes)
.75(170) = .85(150)

2.There is 60 gallons of 50% solution of glycerin and water.
How many gallons of water must be added to such solution in order to reduce
the glycerin concentration to 12%.
Let x = amt of water to be added
.5(60) = .12(60 + x)
30 = 7.2 + .12x
30 - 7.2 = .12x
22.8 = .12x
x=
x = 190 gallons has to be added
:
Check solution:
.5(60) = .12(60+190)

3.How many gallons of 40% salt solution and 80% salt should be mixed in order
to have 40 gallons of 50% salt solution?
Let x = amt of 80% salt solution required
then. since the total amt is to be 40 gal:
(40-x) = amt of 40% solution required
.8x + .4(40-x) = .5(40)
