Ethiopian Airlines
Despite its humble beginnings, Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian) has had more than 75 years of
successful journey which made it the leading Aviation Group in Africa. Of course, Ethiopian is
aging beautifully. Over the decades, the airline has established itself as the leader in all facets
of the aviation business: technology leadership, network expansion and aviation mentoring.
Ethiopian started its operation with five C-47 aircrafts back in 1946 and made its debut flight
to Cairo via Asmara. Ever since, it has been growing in leaps and bounds, and continued
to introduce cutting-edge aviation technology and systems. As aviation technology leader,
Ethiopian was a pioneer in ushering in new aviation technology into Africa including the first
jet airplane as well as the first B767, B777-200LR, B787 Dreamliner, and 7879 in the continent.
Ethiopian also led the way in operating Africa’s first Airbus A350 XWB. Currently, the airline
has a fleet of more than 144 modern aircraft with average fleet age of five years; it also has
31 ultramodern aircraft on order.
Living its motto of Bringing Africa Together and Beyond, Ethiopian has created Africa-wide
and transcontinental air connectivity networks linking its main hub Addis Ababa to the rest
of the world. The airline serves 131 international passenger and cargo destinations, including
63 African cities, with daily and multiple flights with a minimum layover in Addis. As a veteran
carrier serving a vast intra-African network, Ethiopian flies to more destinations in the conti-
nent than any other airline.
Having met its 15-year strategic plan, Vision 2025, ahead of time, Ethiopian has charted out a
more ambitious strategic roadmap called Vision 2035 to further bolster its continuous growth.
In December 2011, Ethiopian took a giant leap forward in its successful journey by joining Star
Alliance, the world’s largest airline network.
Over the years, the multi-award-winning airline has received countless coveted accolades
and recognitions for its excellence, including Skytrax’s Four-Star Airline Certification and Best
Airline in Africa title for 5 consecutive years, and Overall Excellence for Outstanding Crisis
Leadership Award in 2020 to mention but a few. Building on its continuous success, Ethiopian
has achieved an average growth rate of 25 percent in the seven years prior to the COVID-19
pandemic. www.ethiopianairlines.com

Professor Indresan Govender is the Group Executive of the Mineral Processing & Characteri-
sation cluster at Mintek. With over 20 years of R&D experience, he joined Mintek in June 2021.
Professor Govender graduated with a PhD from the University of Cape Town where he worked
for 15 years in physics and engineering. He then joined UKZN as Professor of Particle Tech-
nology and Mineral Processing. Indresan maintains an active research relationship with UCT
(Centre for Minerals Processing) and UKZN (Chemical Engineering) through his concurrent
appointments as honorary Professor. On the international front, he brings to Mintek a wide
network of research collaborators spanning many of the leading Universities across the world.
He is also an executive member of many national and international research bodies in mineral
processing and particle technology: Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC), International
Comminution Research Association (ICRA), Centre for Minerals Research (CMR), and Cen-
tre for Research in Computational and Applied Mechanics (CERECAM). He has established
strong funding links with national and international companies working in the broad area of
granular flow systems.
His research specialization explores complex granular flows with in-situ nuclear imaging mea-
surements via bi-planar X-rays and Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT), continuum for-
mulations of industrial flows, and numerical modelling via the Discrete Element Method (DEM)
and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Specific areas of mineral processing research
include experimental, numerical, and theoretical continuum descriptions of free surface flows
like tumbling mills, and confined flows like the high shear IsaMill and cyclone separator. The
expedience of continuum modelling frameworks are favoured in describing the rheological
character of granular flows which fundamentally drives energy dissipation and mixing encoun-
tered in most mineral processing systems. In addition to surpassing the interpolation capa-
bility of empirical modelling approaches with mechanistic understanding that can extrapolate
beyond the machine’s window-of-design, the continuum framework is also amenable to
spreadsheet friendly repackaging that can be easily adopted by industrial partners.
Indresan aims to foster a culture of research-led innovation within the minerals processing
sector by complimenting existing strategies with mechanistic insights.

Building on its continuous success, Ethiopian
has achieved an average growth rate of 25 percent in the seven years prior to the COVID-19
pandemic.

Cote d’Ivoire
Cote d’Ivoire’s three growth sectors are mining and petroleum, industrial and agricultural.
The mining sector is experiencing a revival of activity. At over 1% of Ivorian GDP, mining is a
sector in the making. The Ivorian government is targeting the annual production of 21 tons of
gold, one million carats of diamonds and 24 million tons of iron.
In the industrial sector, the country has a skilled workforce and the infrastructure necessary
for industrial and commercial activity, including transport, energy and the banking system.
Côte d’Ivoire has achieved remarkable results in agricultural development. Cocoa and coffee
crops alone occupy more than 75% of the land devoted to cash crops with a predominance
of cocoa (56%). To this end, Côte d’Ivoire ranks respectively 1st in the world and 3rd in Africa.
Cotton, oil palm, cashew and rubber occupy 23% of the land area.
