With its 30.218.000 km² acreage, Africa, one of the old world’s lands, is the third largest continent after Asia and America.
Africa is named after the tribes called “Afri” or “Africani” by the Romans who landed on Carthage for the first time. The
name of Africa was given to this country during the “Punic” Wars. By then the Greek writers used to call this continent
“Libya”, namely “the Land of Libyans. However, this name started to be used for the whole continent in the late 12 th
century A.D. As far its geographical features are concerned, Africa is separated from Asia by the Suez Canal in the
northeast while it is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea in the north. The continent is in the neighbourhood of Red Sea and
the Indian Ocean in the east. The south of the continent is surrounded by the Indian Ocean again and its west is surrounded
by the Atlantic Ocean. The continent is separated from Europe by the Strait of Gibraltar with a fourteen-kilometer width.
Equatorial and Savannah, the climates of the torrid zone, are prevalent and dominant in the continent. The Sahara in the
north and Kalahari in the south are where desert climates are seen. However, Mediterranean climate prevails the
Mediterranean coast and Kap Region of South Africa. The important rivers of the continent are Nile, Niger, Congo and
Zambezi. In the east of the continent are tectonic lakes within the Gor depression in the north-south direction. Victoria,
Tanganica, Nyasa and Rudolph Lakes are among the important ones.

Futurism is an artistic movement developed by the young friends of the Italian writer Martinetti as a reaction to academism.
Martinetti et. al. believed that they would change the existing understanding of art completely and they did nto avoid
expressing their thoughts in clear terms. Being totally against the traditional morality, this group attacked the traditions and
the books written according to these traditions. They wanted to do away with whatever had been established by then and
become the value of a nation. In other words, they aimed to destroy the old and replace it with the new. While on one hand
they opposed the past which they saw as the source of all the individual and social problems existing then, they featured the
future on the other. They were after the understanding of art and literature dominated by strength, speed, machines,
machine guns and war. Viewed from this perspective, it is quite clear that they defended the technology and urban
modernity. For their prediction was that these would dominate the world and replace the mankind in the future. Their
manifesto, containing all these ideas, was published in the newspaper of Figaro in 1919. World War I is, though it seems
strange, mentioned in this manifesto with praise. Despite all these, however, the movement of futurism could be said to be
more effective in other art branches than in literature.
The earliest examples of English literature are written in Old English, also known as Anglo-Saxon, which is the source of
English spoken today. In fact, Old English was the West German language spoken between the 5 th and 11th centuries in the
region known as England today, and it started to appear in the written language in the early 8 th century. Not only the words
of this language but also its grammar rules and some letters are derived from German alphabet. Therefore, Old English has
big differences from the English spoken today. These differences are so distinct that it is impossible even for an
Englishman with a good training of literature at a good university to understand the earliest texts of his own language
without receiving a separate and comprehensive training. For this reason, a lot of literature historians consider the Old
English period not as the beginning of English literature, but as a prologue of it. There is even no place for this period in
many anthologies dealing with the history of English literature. However, Anglo-Saxon undergoes a big change in the 15th
century and truns into Middle English. Yet this new form of English is very different from today’s English, too. This
change can be observed in the transition from Beowulf of the 720s, which was the first English epic, to The Canterbury
Tales of 1390 which could be accepted as the first English masterpiece.
