REGULATORY BODIES FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY

ENGINEERING MANAGERS
 The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH): IOSH stands for
Occupational Safety and Health Organization and is a recognized body for
health and safety professionals. IOSH is a UK-based organization that
provides professional qualifications to raise workplace health and safety
standards. The common key aspect of the course is identifying hazards,
defining & assessing risks, and improving health & safety performance.

Globally recognized qualifications such as the NEBOSH National General

Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or the NEBOSH International
General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, are excellent first steps to
becoming fully qualified health and safety professionals. There are also
qualifications for building safety, as well as for fire protection and risk
management.

 The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA): They

are aimed at people in the UK and abroad who are responsible for
sustainability and environmental management within their organization.
It helps to meet future business needs and deal with external
environmental hazards, adaptation, resilience, and cultural change.

 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS): A

management system is an active process in which an organized set of
components enables an organization to achieve multiple goals. OHSMS is
a framework that enables an organization to continuously identify and
control its health and safety risks, reduce the risk of incidents, contribute
to compliance with health and safety laws, and continuously improve its
performance.
The benefits include a safer workplace, increased employee morale, reduced
costs, and stakeholder trust. The most successful OHSMS systems are based on
a common set of important elements. These include leadership, employee
participation, risk identification, risk prevention and management, education
and training, and program evaluation and improvement.
 Key differences between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001:2018: ISO 45001:
2018 focuses only on the organization's occupational health and safety
management system. Published in March 2018, this standard aims to
eliminate the possibility of potential occupational diseases and injuries. It
also follows the structure of ISO 14001: 2015 and ISO 9001: 2015, so if
you already have ISO 45001: 2018 certification, you can easily integrate
these standards into any organization. This ISO standard is based on the
OHSAS 18001, and it focuses on the OH&S evaluation. Organizations that
already have BS OHSAS 18001 certification can easily migrate to ISO
45001 until March 2021. ISO 45001: 2018 is primarily based on the
OHSAS 18001 standard, but there are some differences between these
two standards.
The now-defunct OHSAS 18001 focuses primarily on managing occupational
health and safety risks and related issues. However, ISO 45001 focuses
primarily on the interaction between the work environment and the
organization. This helps to reduce or eliminate the possibility of any danger.
The new ISO 45001: 2018 standard is a process-based certification, while the
old OHSAS 18001 is a methodological certification. The former focuses
primarily on why the risk is greater than the solution.

OHSAS 18001 isn't dynamic, but the new ISO 45001 is. In addition to solving all
OSH problems in any organization, it also gives you the confidence to manage
efficient productivity and safety for better working conditions for all workers.

OHSAS 18001 certification focuses primarily on the professional risk of any

organization, while ISO 45001 focuses on both risk and opportunity. By doing
so, you not only eliminate the possibility of future threats but also look for
opportunities to improve the overall quality of safety. OHSAS 18001 never
incorporates the views of any organization's stakeholders. However, the new
ISO 45001: 2018 covers all aspects. With this involvement, you not only build
engagement with all parties but also create a better work environment.

The update from OHSAS18001 to ISO 45001: 2018 has seen significant changes
in the way organizations recognize the management of health and safety and
other related issues in the global industry. And now, occupational health and
safety is not a separate issue for organizations. It has become an integral part
of the overall operating procedure to maintain a sustainable organization. The
approaches of these two standards are different, but previously following the
OHSAS 18001 guidelines has made it easier for any organization to migrate to
ISO 45001.
