Introductory Message
Welcome to General Mathematics for Grade 11!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Senior High School Mathematics Teachers of Negros Occidental High School. It is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The General Mathematics Learning Activity Sheet will help you facilitate
the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The General Mathematics Learning Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on
the agreed schedule.

KEY CONCEPTS OF FUNCTIONS

GENERAL MATHEMATICS
LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 1

I. Learning Competencies with Code

• Represents real-life situations using functions, including piece-wise functions.
(M11GM-Ia-1)
• Evaluates a function. (M11GM-Ia-2)
• Performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition of
functions. (M11GM-Ia-3)
• Solves problems involving functions. (M11GM-Ia-4)

II. Background Information for Learners

Before we proceed in representing real-life scenario using function, let’s
remember your knowledge about relations and functions.

RELATION FUNCTION
A relation is a rule that relates A function is a relation where each
values from a set of values (called element in the domain is related to only
the domain) to a second set of one value in the range by some rule.
values (called the range).
The elements of the domain can The elements of the domain can be
be imagined as input to a imagined as input to a machine that
machine that applies a rule to applies a rule so that each input
these inputs to generate one or corresponds to only one output.
more outputs.
A relation is also a set of ordered A function is a set of ordered pairs (x,y)
pairs (x,y). such that no two ordered pairs have the
same x – value.

The following diagrams are example of relations. Can you determine which
among them illustrates a function?

Function Not a Function Function Not a Function

The following sets of ordered pairs are example of relations. Which among
them is a function and which one is not?
{(-2, 5), (-1, 0), (2, -3)} – Function
{(-1, 0), (0, -3), (2, -3), (3, 0), (2, 3), 4, 5)} – Not a Function
{(3, 1), (4,1), (5, 1)} – Function
{(7, 1), (6, 1), (7, 2), (6, 2)} – Not a Function

1
By using the vertical line test, a graph represents a function if and only if each
vertical line intersects the graph at most once.

The graph on the left is a Function because if you

will place a vertical line (blue line) at any point on
the graph, the said vertical line will only intersect
the graph at only one point.

The graph on the right is not a Function

because if you will place a vertical line (blue
line) at any point on the graph, the said
vertical line will intersect the graph at more
than one point. In fact, it intersected the graph
at two points.

Functions can be used to model real situations. Identifying an appropriate

function model will lead to a better understanding of various phenomena.

Example 1: In the Philippines, 12% Value Added Tax or VAT applies to practically
all sales of services and imports, as well as to the sale, barter, exchange, or lease
of goods or properties (tangible or intangible). If you purchased an x amount of
goods from a grocery store, determine the function V for the amount of VAT that
you will pay. How much is the VAT if your total purchase is at ₱1,000?

Solution:
Since VAT is at 12% or 0.12, then the function for this problem is V(x) = 0.12x.
If you purchased ₱1,000 worth of goods, then V(1,000) = (0.12)(1,000) = ₱120.
Therefore, the VAT that the customer pays given the situation above is ₱120.

Example 2: In Bacolod City, the average per hour rate that an internet café charges
is at ₱20/hour. Determine the function C for the cost of consuming x number of
hours. How much will a student pay if he used 2.5 hours to accomplish his school
project?

Solution:
The Cost function for this scenario is C(x) = 20x. By substitution,
C(2.5) = (20)(2.5) = ₱50. Thus, the student must pay ₱50 for the 2.5 hours of
internet consumption. Note that C(x) is read as C of x.

There are functions that requires more than one formula in order to obtain
the given output. There are instances when we need to describe situations in
which a rule or relationship changes as the input value crosses certain
boundaries. In this case, we need to apply the piecewise function.

2
A piecewise function is a function in which more than one formula is used
to define the output. Each formula has its own domain, and the domain of the
function is the union of all these smaller domains. We notate this idea like this:

Example 1:
A user is charged ₱300 monthly for a particular mobile plan which includes 100
free text messages. Message in excess of 100 are charged ₱1 each. Represent
the amount T a consumer pays each month as a function of the number of
message 𝒎 sent in a month. How much will a user pay if he had 500 messages
sent in a month?

Solution: Let T (m) represent the amount paid by the customer each month. It
can be expressed by the piecewise function:

𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝒊𝒇 𝟎 < 𝒎 ≤ 𝟏𝟎𝟎

T (m) = {
𝟑𝟎𝟎 + (𝒎 − 𝟏𝟎𝟎) 𝒊𝒇 𝒎 > 𝟏𝟎𝟎
if m = 500
T(500) = 300 + (500 – 100) = 300 + 400 = 700
Therefore, the user will pay ₱700 for the said month.

Example 2:
The Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law (TRAIN Law), officially
designated as Republic Act No. 10963, is the initial package of the
Comprehensive Tax Reform Program (CTRP) signed into law by President
Rodrigo Duterte on December 19, 2017. The table below is the new TRAIN law
tax rates. Illustrate a piecewise function to represent the annual tax T in terms of
the annual income 𝒊.

3
Solution:
The input value is the annual income and the output value is the annual tax. If
T (𝒊) represents the annual tax, then the function can be represented as follows:

T (𝒊) =

Questions:
a. How much is the annual tax if your annual income is ₱185,000?
Solution: T(185,000) = 0 or No Tax
b. If your annual income is ₱300,000, solve for your annual tax.
Solution: T(300,000) = (300,000 – 250,000)(0.20) = (50,000)(0.20) = ₱10,000
c. Determine the annual tax if the annual income of a government employee is
at ₱1,000,000.
Solution: T(1,000,000) = 130,000 + (1,000,000 – 800,000)(0.30)
T(1,000,000) = 130,000 + [(200,000)(0.30)]
T(1,000,000) = 130,000 + 60,000 = ₱190,000

Example 3:
A jeepney ride costs ₱8 for the first 4 kilometers, and each additional integer
kilometer adds ₱1.50 to the fare. Use a piecewise function to represent the
jeepney fare F in terms of the distance d in kilometers. How much will a passenger
pay if the distance traveled was 7 kilometers?

Solution:
The input value is the distance and the output value is the cost of the jeepney fare.
If F (d) represents the fare as a function of distance, then the function can be
represented as follows:
𝟖 𝒊𝒇 𝟎 < 𝒅 ≤ 𝟒
F (d) = {
𝟖 + 𝟏. 𝟓𝟎(𝒅 − 𝟒) 𝒊𝒇 𝒅 > 𝟒

if d = 7
F(d) = 8 + 1.50(d – 4) = 8 + 1.50(7 – 4) = 8 + 1.50(3) = 8 + 4.50 = 12.50
Therefore, the passenger must pay ₱12.50.

When a function 𝒇 is defined by 𝒚 = 𝒇(𝒙), then 𝒙 is called as the

independent variable. Any element of the domain can be chosen as a value of the
independent variable. The resulting value determines the corresponding value
of 𝒚 which is the dependent variable. The value of the dependent variable
𝒚 = 𝒇(𝒙) that corresponds to a specific value of an independent variable 𝒙 is
found by substituting 𝒙 into the function rule, then simplifying the resulting
expression. Such process is called evaluating a function.

4
Examples:
Direction: Evaluate the function 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐 for each replacement
value of 𝒙.
a. 𝑓 (−3)

c. 𝑓 (0)
d. 𝑓 (3)
e. 𝑓 (𝑡²)
f. 𝑓(𝑥 + 1)
g. 𝑓 (−𝑥)
h. 𝑓 (½)

Solutions: To evaluate the function, simply replace 𝒙 in 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐 with

the given replacement value.
a. 𝑓(−3) = (−3)2 + 3(−3) − 2 = 9 − 9 − 2 = 0 − 2 = −2
b. 𝑓 (2) = (2)2 + 3(2) − 2 = 4 + 6 − 2 = 10 − 2 = 8
c. 𝑓 (0) = (0)2 + 3(0) − 2 = 0 + 0 − 2 = −2
d. 𝑓 (3) = (3)2 + 3(3) − 2 = 9 + 9 − 2 = 18 − 2 = 16
e. 𝑓(𝑡 2 ) = (𝑡 2 )2 + 3(𝑡 2 ) − 2 = 𝑡 4 + 3𝑡 2 − 2
f. 𝑓(𝑥 + 1) = (𝑥 + 1)2 + 3(𝑥 + 1) − 2
= 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1 + 3𝑥 + 3 − 2
= 𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 2
g. 𝑓 (−𝑥 ) = (−𝑥)2 + 3(−𝑥 ) − 2 = 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 2
1 3 2 1+6−8 7−8 −1 1
h. 𝑓 (½) = (½)2 + 3(½) − 2 = + − = = = 𝑜𝑟 −

Operations on functions are similar to operations on numbers. Adding,

subtracting and multiplying two or more functions together will result in another
function. Dividing two functions together will also result in another function if the
denominator or divisor is not the zero function. Lastly, composing two or more
functions will also produce another function.
Let f and g be functions.
1. Their sum, denoted by 𝑓 + 𝑔, is the function denoted by:
(𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥 ) = 𝑓(𝑥 ) + 𝑔(𝑥 )
2. Their difference, denoted by 𝑓 − 𝑔, is the function denoted by:
(𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥 ) = 𝑓(𝑥 ) − 𝑔(𝑥 )
3. Their product, denoted by 𝑓 • 𝑔, is the function denoted by:
(𝑓 • 𝑔)(𝑥 ) = 𝑓(𝑥 ) • 𝑔(𝑥 )
𝑓
4. Their quotient, denoted by , is the function denoted by:
𝑔
𝑓 𝑓 (𝑥 )
( ) (𝑥 ) =
𝑔 𝑔 (𝑥 )

5. The composition of functions, denoted by 𝑓 ∘ 𝑔, is the function denoted by:

(𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥 ) = 𝑓 (𝑥 ) ∘ 𝑔(𝑥 ) or 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥 ))

Note that (𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥 ), 𝑓(𝑥 ) ∘ 𝑔(𝑥 ) and 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥 )) are read as “f of g of x”.

Majority of the problems we encounter in real life situation involve

relationship between two quantities where one quantity depends on another. For
example, personnel in Department of Health observes the number of persons
infected by a particular virus in a certain community increases with time. In finding
out the exact function relating to the number of persons infected to time,
modelling can be used. Once the model is determined solving and predicting the
properties of the subject being studied can be done. At this point we will focus on
solving in order for us to predict answer to existing problems.

Examples:
Direction: Analyze and solve the following problems.

1. Suppose that 𝑵(𝒙) = 𝒙 denotes the number of shirts sold by a shop and the
selling price per shirt is given by 𝒑(𝒙) = 𝟐𝟓𝟎 − 𝟓𝒙 where 𝟎 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 𝟐𝟎.
Find (𝑵 • 𝒑)(𝒙) and describe what it represents.

Solution:
(𝑁 • 𝑝)(𝑥 ) = 𝑁(𝑥 ) • 𝑝(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 (250 − 5𝑥 ) = 250𝑥 − 5𝑥 2
Since the function (𝑁 • 𝑝)(𝑥 ) is the product of the quantity sold and the selling
price, then it represents the revenue earned by the company.

8
2. In an experiment, a researcher has concluded that a dosage of g grams of a
certain medicinal formula causes a rat to increase its mass M in grams. Using
the function 𝑴(𝒈) = 𝟐(𝒈 + 𝟐𝟓), how much mass would a rat gain if 30 grams
of the medicinal formula is administered to it?

Solution:
𝑴(𝒈) = 𝟐(𝒈 + 𝟐𝟓) = 𝟐(𝟑𝟎 + 𝟐𝟓) = 2 (55) = 110
Therefore, the mass of the said rat will increase by 110 grams.

3. As a working student, Julia bakes cakes and sells every one whole of cake at
₱750. The cost of making a whole of cake is at ₱225 and the operating
expense is at ₱1,250. Construct a monthly profit function P for the x number
of cakes baked. How much is her profit if 20 cakes were sold in a month?

Solution:
𝑷(𝒙) = 𝟓𝟐𝟓𝒙 − 𝟏, 𝟐𝟓𝟎
𝑷(𝟐𝟎) = 𝟓𝟐𝟓(𝟐𝟎) − 𝟏, 𝟐𝟓𝟎 = 𝟗, 𝟐𝟓𝟎
Thus, Julia’s profit after selling 20 cakes in a month is ₱9,250.
