Customer Notice a00130838

Version 15

Published: March 16, 2023

(Supersedes Customer Notice c04650693)

Title: (Revision) HPE MSA Storage - Product Firmware, Software Definitions, and
Support Policy
Details:

In the policy, firmware and software is no longer categorized as either supported or

unsupported; instead, all released code falls within one or more of the following
categories:

 Active - Identifies a version of code with code base sustainment capabilities.

 Inactive - Identifies a version of code with no code base sustainment
capabilities.

Active Version Support Expectations

Customers running on active versions of code will receive all warranty, support, and
elevation capabilities based on their existing warranty, contract terms and
conditions, and service-level entitlements. For newly discovered and undocumented
issues, cases can be elevated to HPE Storage engineering. Since active code is still
available to our engineering labs, once the lab receives the elevation, they will
attempt to diagnose the issue and work toward developing and delivering a solution.
Products that have gone End of Support Life will be worked as best effort only, with
minimal Lab resources available.

NOTE: More than one version of code can be considered active at any given time.

Inactive Version Support Expectations

HPE Services will help the customer determine if the reported issue matches any known
issues. If not, services will investigate to determine if there are any other
contributors, and then support the customer based on service entitlement through the
upgrade to an active code release. If the issue persists after the upgrade to an
active release, the active version policy applies. If systems are running inactive
code and issues are encountered, the ability to use HPE Storage engineering elevation
processes will be restricted until affected systems are updated to active code.

Customers who do not upgrade their systems when their firmware or software becomes
inactive are not following best practice recommendations from HPE and, as a result,
face increased risk due to exposure to known (and unknown) issues. If systems are
running inactive code and issues are encountered, then the ability to use HPE Storage
engineering elevation processes will be restricted until affected systems are updated
to active code. This increases the risk of unplanned maintenance time within certain
customer environments.

MSA Health Check

To effectively monitor the health of the HPE MSA arrays, it is a best practice to
periodically upload a log file into the MSA Health Check web tool to make sure the
array is compliant with all best practices and current on all firmware.

HPE MSA 2050/1050 SAN Storage and HPE MSA 2040/1040 SAN Storage Notification Best
Practices

 Enable notifications through SNMP, email, or syslog settings in the user

interfaces.
 Set alerts to a Warning level to ensure that you are monitoring your system for
possible failures.
 Perform periodical validation of notification settings after firmware load or
component replacement to guard against changes in infrastructure or
configuration settings.

HPE MSA 2060/1060 Storage Notification Best Practices

To effectively monitor the health of the HPE MSA array, it is a best practice to:

 Enable notifications through SNMP, email, or syslog settings in the user

interfaces.
 Set the alert notification level to All and the notification level to Warning
to ensure that you are monitoring your system for possible failures.
 Perform periodical validation of notification settings after firmware load or
component replacement to guard against changes in infrastructure or
configuration settings.
