Given: m = 30 kg
μk = 0.4
l1 = 0.5 m ; l2 = 0.2 m (unstretched length)
θ = 45 deg
F = 200 N
s = 1.5 m
k = 50 N/m

To find: the speed of the collar, v

From the Equations of Equilibrium, +↑ 𝐹𝑦 = 0;

(NC – F sin (45) – 30(9.81) = 0) ,
NC = 152.9 N

Principle of Work and Energy:

0 + [F cos (45) – μkNC ] (s) + ½ k (l1 – l2)2 – ½ k (s + l1 – l2 )2 = ½ mv2

[200 cos (45) – 0.4 (152.9)] (1.5) + ½ (50) (0.5 – 0.2)2 – ½ (50) (1.5 + 0.5 – 0.2)2 = ½ (30) v2

v = 1.666 m/s Ans.

14.19 The collar has a mass of 5 kg and is moving at 8 m/s when x = 0 and a
force of F = 60 N is applied to it. The direction θ of this force varies such
that θ = 10x, where x is in meters and θ is clockwise, measured in degrees.
Determine the speed of the collar when x =3 m. The coefficient of kinetic
friction between the collar and the rod is μk = 0.3.

SOLUTION

From the Equations of Equilibrium, +↑ 𝐹𝑦 = 0;

(N – 60 sin θ – 5(9.81) = 0) ,
N = 60 sin θ + 49.05

Principle of Work and Energy:

3 3
1 1
5 (8)2 + 60 cos 𝜃 𝑑𝑥 − 0.3 60 sin θ + 49.05 𝑑𝑥 = 5 (𝑣)2

160 + 60 cos (10𝑥) 𝑑𝑥 − 18 sin 10𝑥 𝑑𝑥 − 14.715 1 𝑑𝑥 = 5 (𝑣)2
0 0 0 2

v = 6.89 m/s Ans.
