CHAPTER 1
Background of the Company

3 1 1
The Bansalan Coop is a medium sized cooperative whose total assets

and annual profits experienced unprecedented growth starting FY 1997 to

date. Bansalan Coop was formally organized on July 30,1967. Through the

initiation of the Parish Priest, 35 people banded together and contributed a

total of P650.00 in share capital from the Bansalan Parochial Cooperative

Credit Union (BANPACCU).this new cooperative was registered by the

Cooperative Administration Office on November 7,1967 as an Agricultural

Cooperative pursuant to Republic Act No 2023. The parish cooperative

administration offered a small space for an office to enable the Cooperative to

start its operation.

On the fourth year of its existence the leaders decided to practice self –

reliance by moving to a new location outside the Church compound. A small

building was offered by one of its members to accommodate to non-catholic

sectors of the community subsequently, the word “Parochial” was dropped out

from its name ,thus changing it to BASALAN COOPERATIVE CREDIT

UNION ,INC.(BANCOCU). In compliance with the government policy in 1977,

the name was again changed, this time to BANSALAN KILUSANG BAYAN

FOR CREDIT, INC., pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 175 and Letter of

Implementation No. 23. Encouraged by the Government policy allowing

cooperatives to engage in other lines of business in addition to their original

single line operation, in 1979 BCS became a Multi-purpose Cooperative and

the name of the Cooperative was changed to BANSALAN MULTIPURPOSE

COOPERATIVE, INC., under BACOD. This name was confirmed officially on

March 21, 1991 upon registration with the Cooperative Development Authority

(CDA).

BANSALAN COOP remained stagnant during the first 30 years of its

existence. Its membership did not grow beyond 750 and its image was very

poor. It was located on the second floor of the public market building and it

occupied a very small office space. The borrowers had to wait for days for

loan releases due to insufficient funds. BCS also operated a small copra

buying business to accommodate the copra production of its members. In

1997 BCS was invited to join the CUES System. CUES Philippines was a

project of the World Council of Credit Unions. This project was funded by the

USAID. The objective of CUES was to develop existing cooperatives into

Model Credit Unions through the implementation of the Model Credit Union

Building methodology. When CUES came the cooperative had just closed its

supermarket and its Palay trading and milling business due to unprofitable

operations.CUES emphasized that it did not have the capability to help BCS

in its copra business because they only had the technology for Model Credit

Union Building (MCUB). CUES recommended to phase out the copra trading

but when this proposal was submitted to the General Assembly the members

appealed for the continuation of the copra buying operation to enable them to

pay their loans. The clamor of the members was upheld and it was decided to

spin-off the credit operation from the multipurpose operation.

The BOD and other officers of the Bansalan Multipurpose Cooperative

automatically became the BOD and officers of the Bansalan Credit

Cooperative. This arrangement was approved by the General Assembly. For

purposes of economy BCS decided to have only one set of BOD and officers.

As a result, all transactions with outside partners and funding agencies were

made in the name of the Bansalan Credit Cooperative

CHAPTER 3
Assessment of Practicum Program
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY EXPERIENCE?

During my work experience, I learned a lot about how to handle tough

situations. People there taught me that staying positive, even when things get

hard, is super important. Also, I figured out that it’s smart to listen to older,

more experienced folks at work. They’ve been through a lot and have great

advice to offer. So, I’m grateful for the chance to learn from them and grow

both personally and professionally. Now, I feel ready to tackle whatever

comes my way in the working world.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE PEOPLE AROUND ME

During my work experience at the BCS Office, I had the opportunity to

engage with a diverse group of individuals. Not only did I form friendships with

my colleagues, but I also gained insights into the various roles and

responsibilities within the organization. Witnessing the unique skills and

innovative ideas each person brought to the table was truly inspiring.

Moreover, receiving constructive criticism and guidance from my peers greatly

contributed to my personal and professional development. Through these

interactions, I not only learned how to effectively communicate and

collaborate with others but also acquired new skills that will be valuable for my

future endeavors. Overall, my time at BCS was enriching and educational,

providing me with valuable experiences and lessons that I will carry with me

throughout my career journey.

THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT DURING MY PRACTICUM

The best part of my practicum was the last day of our immersion or

OJT. We all gathered with our supervisors, including the ma’am and sir, for

snacks in the morning. It was a mix of nostalgia and excitement as we looked

back on our journey together. To our surprise, Sir Eerone and Sir Jasper

treated us to snacks outdoors, which made us feel closer as a group. We had

great conversations while enjoying the snacks, and they shared some really

helpful advice that I still remember.

Later in the afternoon, we had one final Zumba session at 4:00 p.m. It was a

fun way to end our time together. Afterward, we thanked the entire staff for

their support and guidance during our practicum. The staff also shared some

motivating words with us before we said our goodbyes. It was a touching

moment as we thanked everyone who had been a part of making our

practicum experience unforgettable.

MY ADVICE TO THOSE WHO WILL TAKE THEIR PRACTICUM
IN THE NEAR FUTURE

My advice to students who will complete their practicum soon is to take

advantage of every opportunity to learn, whether it’s through coursework or

immersion experiences. Whenever you are unsure of something, don’t

hesitate to ask questions. Additionally, maintain a positive outlook and

conduct yourself professionally at work. Your practicum is an excellent

opportunity to build skills that will benefit you in your future career and gain

real-world experience, especially if you’re immersed in a site that aligns with

your interests and career goals.
