What did you notice from these sentences? Some words are used two times/Some words
are repeated.
Do you still understand the sentences even the word is used two Yes ma’am!
times in each sentence?
What do you think makes it possible? They are used twice in each sentence but they
have different meaning which make the
sentence sensible.
3. FIRM-UP
O M O H M S Y N HOMONYMS.
Very good! So, let’s go back to the sentences, what can you infer
about the words? Words might have the same spelling yet they
have different meanings.

So, what do you think are Homonyms? Homonyms are words that have different
meanings but are pronounced the same or
spelled the same.
Good! I have some examples here. Please read. 1. Never desert your friends in the desert.
What did you notice to the two words? The first desert means to leave or to abandon
while the second desert is referring to a dry
land with a very warm climate.
What else did you notice? The first word was stressed at second syllable
while the second word was stressed at first
syllable.
Good! How is the first word used in the sentence? It is use as a verb.
What about the second word, how is it used? Adjective ma’am.
Yes ma’am!
Do you understand now?
So, let us move on to the next topic. Let’s have the following
examples. Please read the first one. 1. I ran home, and I got there just in time.
Can you identify the transition word in the sentence? “And” is a transition word that connects the
two occurrences equally.
How about in the next example? 2. I ran home, but I was still late.
Very good! In this sentence? 3. During the evening, you can review your
work.
Can you identify the transition word? “During” it is use to identify or indicate time.
Very good! Next example, please read. 5. Ellen loves ice cream. Truly, she'd be happy
to eat sundaes every day.
What do you think is the transition word in the sentence? “Truly”, it adds emphasis or introduce
evidence.
How about in this sentence? Can you identify the transition word
or phrase? 6. Finally, his family will meet him at the
park.
What do you think is the purpose of the words “and, but, during,
as a result, truly, and finally”? It is use as a bridge.
GENERALIZATION:
How will you know that the words in the sentence are If they are used twice in each sentence but they
Homonyms? have different meaning which make the
sentence sensible.
Therefore, what is a Homonym? Homonym is the umbrella term for words with
any combination of the same spelling or sound
but with different meanings.
How about transition words and phrases? Transitional words are like bridges between
parts of your essay. They are cues that help the
reader interpret your ideas.
And there are how many kinds of transition words and phrases? 6 kinds.
- To indicate sequence:
First, second…, to begin with, finally,
next/ then etc.
- To give examples:
for example, for instance
- To indicate time:
once upon a time, while, meanwhile
