TABLE TENNIS

Games became popular and was known by different names such as:
Ping Pong/Gossima/Pom-Pom/Pim-Pam/Whiff Waff
To hit and volley the ball with the paddle to the other side of the table over the net. It
may be played individually or with a partner.

1. BALL - Ping pong table ball is made with celluloid or another plastic. The celluloid
composes of nitrocellulose and camphor that is produced in a sheet and soaked in a hot
alcohol solution until it is soft and easy to play with.
2. RACKET or PADDLE - This unit is used to hit the ball back and forth on the table. Ping
pong table racket is often made of wood and rubber, and that comes into parts, which
are the handle and the blade.
3. TABLE TENNIS TABLE - The table or playing surface is uniformly dark colored and matte,
and it is divided into two halves by a net at 15.25 cm (6.0 in) in height.
4. PEN HOLD - The pen hold grip is so-named because one grips the racket similarly to the
way one holds a writing instrument. The most popular style, usually referred to as the
Chinese pen hold style, involves curling the middle, ring, and fourth finger on the back of
the blade with the three fingers always remain touching one another.
5. SHAKE HAND - The shake hand grip (also called the "shake hands grip") is so-named
because one grips the racket similarly to the way one performs a handshake. The grip is
sometimes referred to as the "tennis grip".
6. DRIVE- a light topspin stroke that produces a low-ball trajectory, are the primary
offensive strokes in table tennis.
7. FOREHAND DRIVE - Keep the upper arm close, but not flush, to the torso. The forearm
(form a rough 90-degree bend with the upper arm) should be drawn back to the 3
o’clock position, and let the waist turn naturally along with the arm (this is where
relaxing is important).
8. BACKHAND DRIVE - From the ready position, the waist turns left with the racket
pointing towards the 9 o’clock position. The left foot should be slightly ahead of the
right.
9. PUSH - Pushes are the basic backspin shots, used to change the pace of an exchange or
to return certain very low and close shots such as backspin serves.
10. FOREHAND PUSH - bring the racket slightly up and back, while keeping the elbow at
your waist. Bend the wrist back. Swing forward with a downward motion, and when the
racket reaches the ball snap the wrist forward for extra racket speed.
11. BACKHAND PUSH - Bring the racket slightly up and back, close into your stomach while
cocking the wrist back. This time try to contact the ball directly in front of your body,
and remember to keep the elbow still while the forearm and wrist move forward and
down. Graze the bottom of the ball and follow through.
12. BLOCK - Blocking allows a player to use the opponents force against him/her, and is
done immediately after the bounce so that maximum control and speed are retained.
13. SMASH - The smash, or kill, is the put-away stroke of table tennis. Any ball that is high
enough and close enough to the opponent’s side can be smashed, although some
opportunities are better than others.
14. FOREHAND SMASH – similar to drive, the key differences include, a longer backswing,
greater weight transfer during swing, faster, more intense snapping of the forearm
when contacting ball.
15. BACKHAND SMASH - Be sure to snap the wrist more as you contact the ball and finish in
a long follow-through.
16. BACKSPIN- a backspin serve is executed with an open racket slicing the bottom of the
ball.
17. TOPSPIN - like driving, topspin serves can be done hitting with a flat racket, or like
looping, where the player grazes the top of the ball with a closed racket for more spin.
18. SIDESPIN - simply hit the back of the ball in a left-to-right or right- to-left motion, as
desired. To make the stroke easier, try holding the racket in front of you and brushing
the bottom of the ball in a pendulum motion.
19. SPORTS - is an activity that requires physical actions and skills where individuals or teams
compete under a set of rules.
20. INDIVIDUAL SPORTS - are played by one participant on each competing side, Dual Sports are
played by two competing pairs
21. TEAM SPORTS - are played by three or more players.
22. ALFRED BUTTS – Invented the Game Scrabble.
23. SCRABBLE - The objective of the scrabble is to have the highest number of points at the end of
the game, when the extra letters run out, and one person doesn’t have any letters in their hand
24. POINT PER LETTERS IN SCRABBLE
25. (1 POINT) – A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R
26. (2POINTS) – D, G
27. (3 POINTS) – B, C, M, P
28. (4 POINTS) – F, H, V, W, Y
29. (5 POINTS) – K
30. (8 POINTS) – J, X
31. (10 POINTS) – Q, Z
32. CHESS - is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered board with 64
squares arranged in an 8×8 grid.
33. KING - is the most important piece, however it is also considered one of the weakest. The king
only moves one square in any direction - up, down, to the sides, and diagonally. The king may
never move himself into check (where he could be captured).
34. QUEEN - is the most powerful piece. It moves in any one straight direction - forward, backward,
sideways, or diagonally. As all the other pieces, except the knight, it cannot move over any
intervening piece.
35. ROOK - may move to any square as far as it wants, but only forward, backward, and to the sides.
The rooks are particularly powerful pieces when they are protecting each other and working
together!
36. BISHOP - may move as far as it wants, but only diagonally. Each bishop starts on one color (light
or dark) and must always stay on that color. Bishops work well together because they cover up
each other’s weaknesses.
37. KNIGHTS move by going two squares in one direction, and then one more move just like an “L”
shape. Knights are the only pieces that can move over other pieces.
38. PAWNS - move forward, but capture diagonally. They can never move backwards. On its first
move, the pawn can advance two squares at a time. Succeeding moves will be one square at a
time. Note: the x represents the move for capturing opponent’s piece.
39. GAME OF THE GENERALS - also called Salpakan and simply The Generals, is an educational
wargame.
40. Sofronio H. Pasola – invented the Game of the Generals.
