CSEC Note 1 FOOTBALL

A football game is played between two team consisting of 11 players on each.

Primary and lower secondary children usually play with a size 3 or 4 football while
the older age group and adults play with a size 5 football.

THE FIELD LAYOUT

THE FIELD DIMENSIONS

LINES - all lines are part of the field of play

TOUCH LINE- When the ball goes over these lines on either side it is out of play
and a throw-in is taken by the opposing team to re-start the game.

GOAL LINE- When the ball passes over these lines that the goal bars are on,
except when a goal is scored, the ball is said to be out of play. Play is re-started
by:

* a goal kick - when the ball has last be touched by an attacking player.

* a corner kick - when the ball has last been touched by a defending player.

HALFWAY LINE- This divides the field into two equal halves for two reasons:

*kick-off - when all players remain in their own half until the kick-off has been
taken.

* offside- once in his own half a player cannot be offside at the moment that his
teammate plays a ball.

A MATCH

Usually captains usually shake hands before a match and then the home captain
tosses a coin and the visiting captain has the call. The team that wins the toss:

1. Has the choice of which side his team will attack in the first half. The opposing
team will then have the kick-off.

2. The team that wins the toss then has the kick-off when the second half starts.
Teams change sides after a half and attack the opposite goal.

A kick -off is used:

*To start a match

*After a goal has been scored

*To start the second half of a match

* To start any periods of extra time

A GOAL MAY BE SCORED DIRECTLY FROM A KICK-OFF

PROCEDURE - all players must be in their own half of the field of play • the opponents of the
team taking the kick-off are at least 9.15 m (10yds) from the ball until it is in play • the ball must
be stationary on the centre mark • the referee gives a signal • the ball is in play when it is kicked
and moves forward • the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player
After a team scores a goal, the kick-off is taken by the other team.

DURATION OF PLAY
The game is divided into two equal halves of 45 minutes each. The half
time period must be stated but must not exceed 15 minutes. The referee
can add on time for time lost in substitutions, removal from the field of
injured players, time wasting or other causes.
