Perpetualite greetings!
We, Senior High School students of Perpetual Help College of Manila – JONELTA, are currently
conducting a research work entitled “The Experiences of Providing Opportunities for the Stem Students
of Senior High School through Financial Assistance.” is to explore and understand the experiences of
senior high school STEM students who have been provided financial assistance in pursuing their
education. The study aims to identify the impact of financial assistance on the academic and career
success of these students, as well as their overall well-being and quality of life. The findings of this study
may provide insights for educational institutions and policymakers in developing more effective programs
and policies that support the education and future success of STEM students.
Relative to this, we are asking for your permission to allow us to have ten (10) Grade 11 students to
become participants of the aforementioned research endeavor. We would like to assure you that the
participants’ identity as well as the pieces of information they will provide will be treated with strictest
confidentiality. Rest assured that there would be no potential harmful impact and risk of the study to the
participants. If you would be interested to receive a copy of the executive summary or the electronic copy
of the entire thesis, this can be made available for you.
We are looking forward to your affirmative response. Thank you very much and may our Lord bless you
more.
Sincerely yours,

Abstract
This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of providing financial assistance to senior
high school students pursuing STEM education. Thematic analysis was used to examine the
narratives of 10 participants who have received financial support. The study found that financial
opportunities and resources, and reduced their financial burden. However, some challenges such
as the lack of awareness about the availability of financial support and the limited scope of the
program were also identified. The findings suggest that providing financial assistance can help
improve the educational experiences of STEM students in senior high school, but there is a need
to raise awareness about such opportunities and expand the scope of the program to reach more
students.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework
This study considered the Theory of Justice as Fairness by John Rawls in 1971, which
argues that everyone has a basic right to liberty and that they ought to be provided with the
same opportunities and chances as individuals who possess similar capabilities. (CFI Team,
2022) In accordance with this concept, Rawls proposed that instead of adhering to utilitarian
philosophies, equal resource distribution should be the ideal state of nature. Hence, the second
principle aligned with this theory states that economic concepts must be set up in a way that
they satisfy two conditions, the first of which emphasizes that more advantages should be given
Operational Framework
John Rawls in 1971. This theory will acknowledge the importance of financial assistance that
serves as educational assistance for students, especially those who are least privileged in the
society. The implementation of this theory will help the researchers get better results and
deeper understanding on how these programs significantly supports the learners to meet their
needs and motivates them to keep up with the academic challenges concerning its financial
aspect.

CHAPTER 2
This chapter presents the information gathered from different books, undergraduate thesis,
websites and studies, both local and foreign origin which sustained the facilitation of this
research. This chapter also includes filling of gaps which is provided which stated the summary
of what others have researched so that they may help in the improvement of the present study.
Each one of the students has a distinct story to tell. This goes without saying for
individuals who were given the privilege to obtain scholarships that an opportunity to get an
education is granted not only for brilliant and promising students, but notably for those who
are financially disadvantaged and marginalized. For many Filipinos, acquiring an education
signifies their greatest hope of escaping poverty. Financial difficulties are one of the major
causes of Filipino children's inability to gain access to a quality education, and the influence
of student scholarships could change a person's life. Scholarships greatly benefit the lives of
students by reducing financial stress and providing access to a fundamental human right. As
the road to prosperity and employment, education is a wise investment. Considering the
benefits of learning for students, it must be kept in mind that education is a service sector
whose primary objective is to create educated people who will significantly contribute to the
economy as it is mostly contributing to the expansion of the country's human resources. Hence,
it comes as no surprise that both the public and private sectors actively participate in providing
17
scholarships for Filipino students, as it is clear that they are aware of the value that a good
student can make to the development of skilled labor. Since many Filipinos are driven to
achieve their goal of accomplishing respective academic goals, the influence of scholarships
for those who need access is by far a much further advantage which generates many more
Considering the state of the economy now, financial assistance seems to be more
crucial than ever. (Study Malaysia, 2017) When choosing a school to continue their education,
this would be one of the most important factors that both parents and students would evaluate.
Learners may be motivated to finish their higher education once they get financial support.
As per Ravi (2021), students' benefits from scholarship programs at schools were
numerous. Scholarships were developed by schools and governments to assist students who
were struggling financially. This aids in ensuring that bright students obtain the education they
deserve. The scholarship also provides a means of pursuing your goals. The scholarship's
primary goal is to make learning possible for all students, regardless of their financial situation.
Annually, millions of students benefit from a variety of scholarships. Scholarships are granted
based on a student's academic achievement as well as other factors including athletic prowess,
According to the GIIS Curator (2023), as learners proceed through their academic careers
and progressively make the transition into professional careers, students may benefit greatly from
scholarships. Scholarships not only help with a portion of the costs associated with higher
education, but also provide an excellent contribution to a student's portfolio and resume, which can
impress admissions boards and prospective employers. A learner 's academic aptitude and

dedication to the pursuit of success in their field of interest are shown by their ability to obtain any
scholarship. The cost of education is high. Notwithstanding the desire of all parents to provide
their children with the best education possible, many cannot afford it, especially as students enter
higher education. The high expense of accommodation and tuition fees often put parents in a

"Your education is the treasure that you can inherit from us", Filipino parents or guardians
commonly assert. This is one of the fundamental set values that Filipinos uphold and carry down
through the generations. Financing solutions, however, are becoming more popular in the nation
as a result of the rising cost of a higher education. Prepaid education plans have already been tried
by others, but not everyone was successful with using them. Thus, there is an additional
opportunity available to intelligent and worthy students, and that is to apply for financial assistance
in the form of a scholarship. The application procedure is tough, and program compliance is quite
strict, due to the large number of Filipino residents who are graduating and preparing to go up
It implies that their parents were not able to pursue higher education. The reality is that
financial support still provides significant assistance to those in need, despite assertions to the
contrary. Having access to financial aid is the first step in increasing the number of college
graduates in our nation. Among the most frequent concerns about going to college is the
expense. It will raise the number of competent individuals in our society and contribute to the
expansion of our economy. If the learner is eligible for financial help, their tuition fee will be

reduced, leaving them with more money for textbooks and living costs. The student's financial
aid may typically also support the expense of living outside of school. They might qualify for

fraction of their wage can be subsidized by the government if they have an occupation.

opportunity to pursue and finish their higher education. Yet, this may also be a means of
encouraging learners to embrace a philanthropic outlook once they have achieved professional
success. As they are familiar with how it feels to get assistance, particularly when it comes to
finances, their positive experience may encourage them to support the institution or even pay
for the education of another student. Both students and educational institutions profit from
such a chain of gratitude. One of the biggest advantages of providing scholarships to university
students is that this enables them to focus on their studies without needing to worry about the
cost. By giving them the opportunity to engage in extracurricular activities that will enhance
their abilities and other interests, students will be more motivated to study. This also allows
academic institutions to experience greater loyalty rates and superior rankings all through
assessment periods since students are much more engaged in learning. Higher education
institutions have the capacity to mold and shape young minds. And yet, in these difficult times,
obtaining the required credentials has proven to be quite challenging. Fortunately, academic

The economic crisis has impacted many Americans, according to Dang and Bulus (2015). Even
college students frequently worry about their finances, which might affect their academic
performance because students must divide their focus between financial and academic issues.
So, it may be said that a family's financial situation motivates and supports children in their
academic endeavors. A highly driven student will utilize a financial issue as motivation to
succeed, claim Asri et al. (2017), if the student runs across the issue. As a result, if students
want to excel academically, they must find a solution to any obstacles that may emerge,

overseas students should be considered while developing support services. In turn, this would

Regarding the function of financial aid for students, the main purpose is to help poor
students, while giving full play to the incentive role of economic assistance, with three primary
According to Jeffrey T Denning (2019) Financial aid can affect both college
enrollment and graduation. The effects on graduation can be driven by students being induced
to enroll by financial aid, students who would have enrolled anyway graduating as a result of
the financial aid, or both. This study isolates the effect of financial aid on the second group by
examining a change in aid that did not change enrollment. There is a discontinuous change in

the reviews focused on the researchers’ main inquiry, providing opportunities through

According to Liu (2019), the main concern of Chinese students is student financial
assistance work in higher education, which is closely related to educational justice and the
advancement of the most disadvantaged populations. Since it can attract more students, ensure
that they may successfully complete their studies, and reduce dropouts due to financial
difficulty, the government accords it high priority, and the university complies.

As per Moneva et. al (2020), students who are financially content are pleased and satisfied
with the money their parents have provided for them. The condition of having one's needs or
wants met or being contented is known as satisfaction. The act of providing someone what
they need or want makes them feel satisfied, which is an enthusiastic, contented sensation.
Learners' capacity to keep going in their studies even when they are aware that it would be a

organization to assist with the expenses of a student who has demonstrated excellence in both
academics and athletics. Nowadays, scholarships are more than simply a benefit. The disparity
between the rising cost of tuition and the amount an individual and its family can afford to pay
out of pocket must be covered by them. Scholarships are granted to those with academic
brilliance and athletic prowess, in addition to those who need financial support. (Gonzales et.

Ethical Consideration
The researchers involved in this investigation are giving due attention to ethical
school administrators and participants. The initial step involves seeking approval
from the Director's Office of the Senior High School at Perpetual Help College
of Manila, which is where the researchers are currently studying. As this study
involves human subjects and pertains to their well-being and safety, certain
of documents and the protection of the participants' identities, these aspects must

be carefully considered. Alongside these crucial elements, other ethical
considerations that must be upheld to proceed with the study include honesty,

Recommendations
1. Financial assistance programs for STEM students in Senior High School aim to provide
equal opportunities for students to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics. The purpose is to bridge the gap between students who have the means to
pursue their passions and those who do not, by providing financial aid to those who are in
need.
2. The financial assistance program supports the academic growth of STEM students by
providing them with the necessary resources and tools to succeed in their studies. These may
include access to textbooks, computers, laboratory equipment, and other learning materials.
Additionally, the program may also offer mentoring and tutoring services to help students with
their coursework.
3. To ensure the success of the financial assistance program, it is important to involve the
participation of the STEM students themselves. Through focus group discussions or surveys,
the program can gather feedback from the students on what type of support they need the most
4. The program should also have a clear and transparent process for selecting the recipients of
the financial aid. This may involve a needs-based assessment or an evaluation of the student's

6. The program should also be regularly evaluated and monitored to assess its effectiveness
and identify areas for improvement. This may involve collecting data on the academic
performance of the STEM students who receive financial assistance and comparing it with
agencies, and private organizations, can also enhance the success of the financial assistance
program. These partnerships can provide additional resources and support to the STEM
students, as well as broaden the reach of the program to more students in need.
8. Future research on the impact of financial assistance programs on the academic and career
outcomes of STEM students in Senior High School is encouraged. This can help validate the
effectiveness of the program and identify best practices for supporting the academic growth of
