Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of providing financial assistance to senior

high school students pursuing STEM education. Thematic analysis was used to examine the

narratives of 10 participants who have received financial support. The study found that financial

assistance positively impacted the participants' academic performance, provided access to

opportunities and resources, and reduced their financial burden. However, some challenges such

as the lack of awareness about the availability of financial support and the limited scope of the

program were also identified. The findings suggest that providing financial assistance can help

improve the educational experiences of STEM students in senior high school, but there is a need

to raise awareness about such opportunities and expand the scope of the program to reach more

students.

Keywords: financial assistance, academic performance, opportunities, resources, financial

burden, awareness, program expansion.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Financial assistance for students is an important aspect of making higher

education accessible to a wider range of individuals. The implementation of such

programs provides opportunities for students to pursue their academic goals

without being burdened by the high costs of tuition, fees, and other expenses. The

objective of this financial aid is to provide support to students who demonstrate

financial need and academic merit, helping to level the playing field and ensuring

that a college education is not just limited to the wealthy. Students who get

financial assistance can afford to attend trade schools, colleges, and universities.

It essentially aids learners in managing the escalating costs of higher education,

including tuition, rooms and boards, textbooks and supplies, and transportation.

With the support of various student financial aid opportunities, including

scholarships, work-study, grants, and investments, individuals can ultimately

accomplish their dream of obtaining a degree, expanding their future

opportunities, and improving their financial situation. (Rose, 2022)

The Philippines is a country that values education as a means of empowering

its citizens and providing them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed

7
in life. However, not everyone has access to quality education due to financial

constraints. To address this, the government has implemented several financial

assistance programs aimed at helping students who are unable to pay for their

education. These programs provide financial aid to students in the form of

scholarships, grants, and loans. With these programs, students from low-income

families are given the opportunity to pursue their dreams and achieve their full

potential. This introduction will provide a brief overview of the financial

assistance programs for students in the Philippines.

The objective of this research is to investigate the experiences of providing

financial assistance to STEM students of Senior High School. The study aims to

determine the impact of the financial assistance program on the academic

performance, motivation, and overall well-being of the recipients, as well as to

evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the program in achieving its

objectives. This research is significant as it can provide valuable insights and

recommendations on how to improve the program and contribute to the

development of educational policies that support the growth and success of

STEM students.

8
Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

This study considered the Theory of Justice as Fairness by John Rawls in 1971, which

argues that everyone has a basic right to liberty and that they ought to be provided with the

same opportunities and chances as individuals who possess similar capabilities. (CFI Team,

2022) In accordance with this concept, Rawls proposed that instead of adhering to utilitarian

philosophies, equal resource distribution should be the ideal state of nature. Hence, the second

principle aligned with this theory states that economic concepts must be set up in a way that

they satisfy two conditions, the first of which emphasizes that more advantages should be given

to those in society who are least privileged.

Operational Framework

The operational framework of this study is anchored on Theory of Justice as Fairness by

John Rawls in 1971. This theory will acknowledge the importance of financial assistance that

serves as educational assistance for students, especially those who are least privileged in the

society. The implementation of this theory will help the researchers get better results and

deeper understanding on how these programs significantly supports the learners to meet their

needs and motivates them to keep up with the academic challenges concerning its financial

aspect.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the insights of the STEM Students of

Senior High in providing opportunities for them through financial assistance:

This research seeks to find the answer to the following question:

1. What is the purpose of providing financial assistance to STEM students of Senior

High School?

2. How does the financial assistance program support the academic growth of the

STEM students?

Assumptions of the Study

The researchers based this study on the following assumptions:

1. Financial assistance programs have a positive impact on the academic

performance of STEM students.

2. Providing financial assistance to STEM students will increase their

participation in extracurricular activities and contribute to their personal

growth.

3. Financial assistance will play an important role in supporting the career

aspirations of STEM students and help them achieve their goals.

11
4. The implementation of financial assistance programs for STEM students will

be efficient and effective, and the school administration will have the

necessary resources to carry out the program.

5. The STEM students who receive financial assistance will have a positive

attitude towards the program and will appreciate the support provided by the

school.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will investigate the experiences of financial assistance programs for the STEM

students of senior high school. The focus of the research will be solely on the financial aid

provided by the school and will not consider external sources of financial support. The research

will be limited to senior high school students in the STEM program who require financial

assistance. The study aims to examine the effect of the financial assistance on the students'

academic performance, involvement in extracurricular activities, and career aspirations. The

results of the research are specific to the STEM students of Senior High Schools.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the information gathered from different books, undergraduate thesis,

websites and studies, both local and foreign origin which sustained the facilitation of this

research. This chapter also includes filling of gaps which is provided which stated the summary

of what others have researched so that they may help in the improvement of the present study.

Providing Opportunities through Financial Assistance & Scholarships

Each one of the students has a distinct story to tell. This goes without saying for

individuals who were given the privilege to obtain scholarships that an opportunity to get an

education is granted not only for brilliant and promising students, but notably for those who

are financially disadvantaged and marginalized. For many Filipinos, acquiring an education

signifies their greatest hope of escaping poverty. Financial difficulties are one of the major

causes of Filipino children's inability to gain access to a quality education, and the influence

of student scholarships could change a person's life. Scholarships greatly benefit the lives of

students by reducing financial stress and providing access to a fundamental human right. As

the road to prosperity and employment, education is a wise investment. Considering the

benefits of learning for students, it must be kept in mind that education is a service sector

whose primary objective is to create educated people who will significantly contribute to the

economy as it is mostly contributing to the expansion of the country's human resources. Hence,

it comes as no surprise that both the public and private sectors actively participate in providing

17
scholarships for Filipino students, as it is clear that they are aware of the value that a good

student can make to the development of skilled labor. Since many Filipinos are driven to

achieve their goal of accomplishing respective academic goals, the influence of scholarships

for those who need access is by far a much further advantage which generates many more

benefits in the future. (Morato, 2022)

Considering the state of the economy now, financial assistance seems to be more

crucial than ever. (Study Malaysia, 2017) When choosing a school to continue their education,

this would be one of the most important factors that both parents and students would evaluate.

Learners may be motivated to finish their higher education once they get financial support.

As per Ravi (2021), students' benefits from scholarship programs at schools were

numerous. Scholarships were developed by schools and governments to assist students who

were struggling financially. This aids in ensuring that bright students obtain the education they

deserve. The scholarship also provides a means of pursuing your goals. The scholarship's

primary goal is to make learning possible for all students, regardless of their financial situation.

Annually, millions of students benefit from a variety of scholarships. Scholarships are granted

based on a student's academic achievement as well as other factors including athletic prowess,

artistic talent, and communication skills.

According to the GIIS Curator (2023), as learners proceed through their academic careers

and progressively make the transition into professional careers, students may benefit greatly from

scholarships. Scholarships not only help with a portion of the costs associated with higher

education, but also provide an excellent contribution to a student's portfolio and resume, which can

impress admissions boards and prospective employers. A learner 's academic aptitude and

18
dedication to the pursuit of success in their field of interest are shown by their ability to obtain any

scholarship. The cost of education is high. Notwithstanding the desire of all parents to provide

their children with the best education possible, many cannot afford it, especially as students enter

higher education. The high expense of accommodation and tuition fees often put parents in a

difficult situation. Certain circumstances make alternative methods, such as education

scholarships, beneficial.

"Your education is the treasure that you can inherit from us", Filipino parents or guardians

commonly assert. This is one of the fundamental set values that Filipinos uphold and carry down

through the generations. Financing solutions, however, are becoming more popular in the nation

as a result of the rising cost of a higher education. Prepaid education plans have already been tried

by others, but not everyone was successful with using them. Thus, there is an additional

opportunity available to intelligent and worthy students, and that is to apply for financial assistance

in the form of a scholarship. The application procedure is tough, and program compliance is quite

strict, due to the large number of Filipino residents who are graduating and preparing to go up

another level to pursue their degrees. (Lumina, 2022)

Financial aid recipients tend to be first-generation college students. (Harrietta, 2022)

It implies that their parents were not able to pursue higher education. The reality is that

financial support still provides significant assistance to those in need, despite assertions to the

contrary. Having access to financial aid is the first step in increasing the number of college

graduates in our nation. Among the most frequent concerns about going to college is the

expense. It will raise the number of competent individuals in our society and contribute to the

expansion of our economy. If the learner is eligible for financial help, their tuition fee will be

19
reduced, leaving them with more money for textbooks and living costs. The student's financial

aid may typically also support the expense of living outside of school. They might qualify for

financial aid while they are still in school based on the type of support they are receiving. A

fraction of their wage can be subsidized by the government if they have an occupation.

Financial assistance also contributes to greater opportunity equality for individuals from all

socioeconomic backgrounds.

By extending financial assistance, academic institutions provide students with the

opportunity to pursue and finish their higher education. Yet, this may also be a means of

encouraging learners to embrace a philanthropic outlook once they have achieved professional

success. As they are familiar with how it feels to get assistance, particularly when it comes to

finances, their positive experience may encourage them to support the institution or even pay

for the education of another student. Both students and educational institutions profit from

such a chain of gratitude. One of the biggest advantages of providing scholarships to university

students is that this enables them to focus on their studies without needing to worry about the

cost. By giving them the opportunity to engage in extracurricular activities that will enhance

their abilities and other interests, students will be more motivated to study. This also allows

academic institutions to experience greater loyalty rates and superior rankings all through

assessment periods since students are much more engaged in learning. Higher education

institutions have the capacity to mold and shape young minds. And yet, in these difficult times,

obtaining the required credentials has proven to be quite challenging. Fortunately, academic

institutions can contribute to the situation's improvement by first providing financial support

20
to their students. A brighter future is within the reach of the children due to scholarship

programs and tuition assistance programs. (Bukas, 2021)

Deserving students are typically awarded scholarships so they can continue their

study. The government, businesses, and even the schools themselves offer many kinds of

scholarships in the Philippines. Financial help for higher education is provided on the basis of

merit, skills, need, or other circumstances and can take the form of grants, loans, or institutional

or private tuition reimbursement (Ganem & Manasse, 2011).

Financial Concerns and Academic Performance

The economic crisis has impacted many Americans, according to Dang and Bulus (2015). Even

college students frequently worry about their finances, which might affect their academic

performance because students must divide their focus between financial and academic issues.

So, it may be said that a family's financial situation motivates and supports children in their

academic endeavors. A highly driven student will utilize a financial issue as motivation to

succeed, claim Asri et al. (2017), if the student runs across the issue. As a result, if students

want to excel academically, they must find a solution to any obstacles that may emerge,

including financial ones.

For support services to be efficient and accomplish their goals. According to Tillman (1990),

institutional commitment is important. He argued that the academic and personal demands of

21
overseas students should be considered while developing support services. In turn, this would

provide the services greater significance for students from other countries.

Regarding the function of financial aid for students, the main purpose is to help poor

students, while giving full play to the incentive role of economic assistance, with three primary

functions: helping economically disadvantaged students, rewarding excellent students, and

guiding students (S Qi, 2022).

Graduation Rate Influenced by Financial Aid for Students.

According to Jeffrey T Denning (2019) Financial aid can affect both college

enrollment and graduation. The effects on graduation can be driven by students being induced

to enroll by financial aid, students who would have enrolled anyway graduating as a result of

the financial aid, or both. This study isolates the effect of financial aid on the second group by

examining a change in aid that did not change enrollment. There is a discontinuous change in

the amount of financial help offered to students who reach the financial independence cutoff

age and some university seniors graduate one year earlier as a result of greater funding.

Synthesis of the Reviewed Literature

The researchers presented various literature and studies regarding the inquiry. To

have a better understanding, the researchers made a synthesis in the succeeding discussion. All

the reviews focused on the researchers’ main inquiry, providing opportunities through

financial assistance and scholarships. The work of literature of different authors like Morato

22
(2022), Study Malaysia (2017), Ravi (2021), GISS Curator (2023), Lumina (2022), Harrietta

(2022), and Bukas (2021), emphasized the primary objectives and greater benefits of providing

financial assistance as well as obtaining scholarships.

Furthermore, economic considerations are not the primary role of the owner in the

field of education, but rather the role of individuals who correctly define academic

achievement to manage all training activities and facilities. (Khamidullina et. al, 2021)

The critical factors are teachers in all educational facilities, constant training and commitment,

competence, managerial abilities, and proficiency. To ensure that individuals are capable and

have the habit of living daily life, such as working ethics, to not do partial work, to be creative,

and to live efficiently, the economic goal of supporting education and educational resources in

financial markets is to produce an economic individual. Every educational institution strives

to sustain itself by finding as many extra funding sources for learning enrichment as is

practical, and by using education funds, it has to be professional, effective, and successful in

the upcoming future. The cost of retraining is gradually rising in order to upgrade valuable

human resources, the learning system, the curriculum structure, and the type of education

provided

According to Liu (2019), the main concern of Chinese students is student financial

assistance work in higher education, which is closely related to educational justice and the

advancement of the most disadvantaged populations. Since it can attract more students, ensure

that they may successfully complete their studies, and reduce dropouts due to financial

difficulty, the government accords it high priority, and the university complies.

23
As per Moneva et. al (2020), students who are financially content are pleased and satisfied

with the money their parents have provided for them. The condition of having one's needs or

wants met or being contented is known as satisfaction. The act of providing someone what

they need or want makes them feel satisfied, which is an enthusiastic, contented sensation.

Learners' capacity to keep going in their studies even when they are aware that it would be a

difficult and prolonged journey is known as persistence. Students can create work effectively

and frequently turn in their assignments early with the help of their families' financial support.

The socioeconomic status of pupils' parents may frequently affect how well they succeed in

school.

A scholarship program is financial assistance provided by a school or other

organization to assist with the expenses of a student who has demonstrated excellence in both

academics and athletics. Nowadays, scholarships are more than simply a benefit. The disparity

between the rising cost of tuition and the amount an individual and its family can afford to pay

out of pocket must be covered by them. Scholarships are granted to those with academic

brilliance and athletic prowess, in addition to those who need financial support. (Gonzales et.

al, 2016)

Financial statements are a source of information for stakeholders and are used for

decision making. Good quality financial reporting facilitates optimal decision making and

allocation of potential resources both in the private sector and the public sector. In the public

24
sector information plays an important role in reducing conflicts of interest inherent in

organizations (Yetman & Yetman. 2004).

According to Kaswan (2012), assistance is a partnership relationship between coaches

and employees that focuses on continuous learning, growth, change, which brings results in

the development of the fulfillment of one's internal resource needs. Assistance directs directly

or indirectly the energy and desires of employees to increase motivation, achieve goals, and

maximize potential (Kaswan 2012). This statement is supported by the results of the study of

Halen and Astuti (2013), the level of understanding of the apparatus about duties and

responsibilities, training and apparatus assistance in financial management fostering has an

effect on organizational performance in financial management. Financial assistance to

financial management, especially the preparation of local government financial reports in

Indonesia, is a moderating variable to improve the competency of officials in the financial

statements. Financial assistance is analyzed based on the leadership policy in an effort to

increase the internal resources of the apparatus and its benefits in guiding the management and

presentation of Local Government Financial Reports (LKPD)

From the great nation of the United States, (Powell, 2018) says that Financial aid

assists students and their families in financing the costs of attending college by paying for

housing and board, transportation, books, supplies, and other educational costs.

25
Hailing also From United States, Dickler (2019) claims that Today’s reality, when

choosing which institution to attend, students must figure out how to pay for it; consequently,

families are depending on financial help to cover the expense.

Deserving students are typically awarded scholarships so they can continue their study.

The government, businesses, and even the schools themselves offer many kinds of scholarships

in the Philippines. Financial help for higher education is provided on the basis of merit, skills,

need, or other circumstances and can take the form of grants, loans, or institutional or private

tuition reimbursement (Ganem & Manasse, 2011).

Gaps Bridged by the Present Study

From the above review of the related literature and studies, the following gaps were

determined:

1. There are no studies yet conducted on experiences of providing opportunities through

financial assistance among the STEM students of the Senior High department considering

Perpetual Help College of Manila as the location of inquiry.

2. There is a scarcity of both foreign and local studies that have examined the experiences of

providing opportunities through financial assistance among the Senior High students from

the STEM strand.

26
Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter introduces the research methodology to be used in this study, the

respondents, and the procedure, instrument, and location of the investigation, as

well as the sample technique analysis.

Research Design

The research conducted utilized a qualitative phenomenological design, which

enabled the researchers to gain insights into how students view the provision of

financial aid opportunities. Phenomenology, as a qualitative research approach,

offers a valuable theoretical framework for educational research. It enables

researchers to undertake flexible, adaptable endeavors to characterize and gain

insight into intricate phenomena, including diverse facets of social experiences

of human beings. (Alhazmi, A.A., & Kaufmann, A, 2022). This research design

statement proposes a phenomenological study that aims to explore the

experiences of senior high school STEM students who are provided with

financial assistance to support their education. The study intends to investigate

how these opportunities affect the academic and personal development of the

students, and how the provision of financial assistance contributes to the

advancement of STEM education in senior high school.

27
Sources of Data

For qualitative research often involves a small sample size, with Polkinghorne

(1989), as cited by Creswell (2007), recommending that investigators interview

a maximum of 10 individuals who have experienced the phenomenon under

study. Crouch and McKenzie (2006) further support this recommendation,

suggesting that a small number of cases (less than 20) allows for close association

with the participants and enhances the validity of in-depth inquiry into

naturalistic settings. In this study, data were primarily gathered through face to

face interview with 10 students who have experienced financial assistance

support, allowing for a detailed exploration of their experiences. To provide

additional context and meaningful answers to the research questions, related

literature and studies were consulted, including books, periodicals, published

theses and dissertations, and online journals.

28
Participants of the Study

The study was conducted with ten (10) students of Senior High School who had

previously attended public schools that were accessible to the researchers. The

participants in this study were selected based on their experience of receiving

financial assistance support. The reason for selecting them to participate in the

study was to gain knowledge and understanding of their experiences of receiving

financial assistance support, which would help to enhance the comprehension of

the program's impact.

Data Gathering Procedure

Upon receiving permission from the Perpetual Help College of Manila

Informants to conduct the study, a formal request letter was sent to the principals

of relevant schools seeking approval to administer survey questionnaires. The

researchers utilized surveys and observational methods to collect data on the

effectiveness of the financial assistance program from selected students.

Moreover, they may have reviewed school records and financial reports to assess

the impact of financial aid on academic performance. The collected data were

analyzed using appropriate statistical methods to address research questions and

test hypotheses. Qualitative data analysis techniques were also employed to gain

insights into students' experiences and perceptions. Based on their findings, the

29
researchers drew conclusions and discussed the implications of their study for

the experiences of financial assistance programs for STEM students in other

schools.

Treatment and Analysis of Data

The information gathered from the interview guide was analyzed using a method

called thematic analysis (TA). This involved sorting the comments made by the

participants into different themes and categories, which helped to identify the

issues and suggest possible solutions. The researchers chose the topics to focus

on in the study based on the themes that emerged from the data.

Ethical Consideration

The researchers involved in this investigation are giving due attention to ethical

concerns, particularly in terms of informing and seeking consent from both

school administrators and participants. The initial step involves seeking approval

from the Director's Office of the Senior High School at Perpetual Help College

of Manila, which is where the researchers are currently studying. As this study

involves human subjects and pertains to their well-being and safety, certain

aspects must be accorded heightened importance. To ensure the confidentiality

of documents and the protection of the participants' identities, these aspects must

30
be carefully considered. Alongside these crucial elements, other ethical

considerations that must be upheld to proceed with the study include honesty,

consent, legality, credibility, confidentiality, and the safety of all parties

involved.

31
Chapter 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents how the researcher completed the process of bracketing,

horizontalization, theme clustering, constructing the textural and structural

descriptions, writing the overall essence, and verification of the lived experiences

of the participants in providing financial assistance support.

As the first step, the researchers did bracketing or the process of mitigating

preconceptions which had the potential to taint the results. Afterwards, the

interview transcriptions were read thoroughly, and significant statements were

highlighted or the so called horizontalization. These statements are shown in

Table 1 and are treated as of equal value in describing the participants’

experiences of the phenomenon.

After the process of horizontalization, the researchers performed theme

clustering, which involved analyzing and grouping significant statements into

themes or meaningful units. Through this, they were able to create ten theme

clusters divided into two groups. The first group of themes was used to answer

the question of what is the purpose of providing financial assistance to STEM

students of Senior High School (textural description), while the second group

answered how does the financial assistance program supports the academic

growth of the STEM students (structural description). The resulting groupings

34
of clustered themes are presented in Table 2, based on the significant statements

and their corresponding ideas.

Table 2
Theme Clusters Divided into Two Groups
Group A: Textural Themes
Theme 1: Overcoming Financial Barriers
Theme 2: Encouraging STEM Education
Theme 3: Supporting Academic Success

Group B: Structural Themes

Theme 1: Academic Resources
Theme 2: Enrichment Opportunities/Programs
Theme 3: Reduced Financial Burden
Theme 4: Improved Confidence and Motivation

1. What is the purpose of providing financial assistance to STEM students

of Senior High School?

Theme 1: Overcoming Financial Barriers. One of the main purposes of

providing financial assistance to STEM students in Senior High School is to

overcome the financial barriers that may prevent them from pursuing their

academic goals. The participants shared their struggles in accessing the resources

needed to pursue their academic goals, and how the financial assistance program

35
helped them overcome these barriers. . The views of the majority were showed

in the following responses:

(1) Sobrang laking impact sakin ng financial assistance dahil sa STEM dahil dun sa mga

financial assistance nakakabili ako ng mga laboratory equipments kasi yung laboratory is one

of the practical test or exams na requirements sa isang subject namin which is yung General

Biology kaya ng dahil dun nakakatulong siya para makapag-comply ako at makapag

participate ako sa ganung activity.

(2) Yes, I experience changes in academic growth after receiving financial assistance. It plays

a vital role in supporting my academic growth and success of mine by providing students with

the resources they need to take advantage of opportunities such as experiences and other

activities that can enhance their academic growth.

(3) Well, as a stem student, there are a lot of things that I should provide for myself, things

that I need to buy for my education, so this is the benefit of financial assistance; it will support

my academic needs.

(4) lessen the burden of my parents to accommodate my other fees in my school, and also to

use the opportunity to cover my other expenses and save the money for my future.

(5) Gave out the boost to gain sufficient learning since having the chance to have financial

assistance is something you should give importance to.

(6) As a stem student, the financial assistance benefit has allowed me to access a well-

constructed curriculum and live in a student-friendly environment at our school without the

need to spend as much. It provided me with the opportunity to develop myself at a prestigious

university.

36
(7) Financial Assistance Program has allowed students to fully engage in their academic

pursuits without the undue burden of financial stress, which can negatively impact their

academic pxerformance.

(8) Nakakabawas ng pproblemahin knowing na you're financially supported so studies nalang

ang iisipin.

(9) It supports the academic growth of a STEM students as financial assistance provides

opportunities for students to complete their education and to achieve their dreams in life.

(10) It helped me a lot, especially because I can allot more financial capacities for myself and

the things that help me to thrive.

According to Vimolsiddhi Horayangkura and the Thailand Researchers who

provided financial support on this study. The inability to overcome financial

barriers has crippled building professionals from implementing innovative and

sound solutions in building projects, particularly when an environmental agenda

is involved.

Theme 2: Encouraging STEM Education. This theme highlights the importance

of STEM education and the need to encourage students to pursue careers in these

fields. The participants shared their experiences of how the financial assistance

program encouraged them to pursue STEM subjects and helped them develop a

love for science and technology. These data are revealed in the following

statements:

37
(1) nakakatulong siya ng mas mamaintain ng isang estudyante o mas mataasan yung ganung

grade requirement at dahil dun hindi sila nag kakaroon ng pangit na parang motivation which

is yun yung naging way nila para mas pag butihan pa at mas mamaintain nila yung grade

requirement.

(2) Financial assistance programs can have a significant impact on my academic performance

as a STEM student in senior high. By providing much-needed support, these programs can

help students pursue their academic goals and achieve their full potential by not worrying

about financial constraints.

(3) As a certified and legitimate "Iskolar ng bayan" in my current school, I would say it was

the greatest blessing I have achieved and got in my academic part of my life. And yes, I no

longer need to pay miscellaneous and tuitions fees to study in my chosen strand in my current

school. Yet, it is my responsibility to buy a uniform for the school.

(4) Initially, going to a prestigious university was one of my main goals in life and I seized the

opportunity to do so by applying for the financial assistance program.

(5) the financial assistance has helped me be able to pursue STEM in a big university such as

the FEU despite the financial difficulties that my family is facing

(6) Having financial assistance helped me to focus more on academics. As I strive studying, I

noticed now that I can easily keep up and understand every lessons. It helped me to obtain

high marks in quizzes and assessments.

(7) It motivates me in a way specially because there is a reward for my hard work which is

financial assistance. In addition, it helps me to focus on studying without worrying whether I

can sustain my needs as a student.

38
This commentary was stimulated by Yeping Li’s first editorial (2014) citing one

of the journal’s goals as adding multidisciplinary perspectives to current studies

of single disciplines comprising the focus of other journals. Research that targets

STEM integration is an embryonic field with respect to advancing curriculum

development and various student outcomes. As noted in this commentary, it

seems that mathematics learning benefits less than the other disciplines in

programs claiming to focus on STEM integration. Factors contributing to this

finding warrant more scrutiny. This commentary advocates a greater focus on

these two disciplines within integrated STEM education research.

Theme 3: Supporting Academic Success. This theme suggests that financial

assistance programs can help support academic success among STEM students.

The participants shared how the program provided them with the necessary

resources to succeed in their academic pursuits, such as textbooks, equipment,

and tutoring services. These findings are revealed in the following responses:

(1) Sobrang laking impact sakin ng financial assistance dahil sa STEM dahil dun sa mga

financial assistance nakakabili ako ng mga laboratory equipments

(2) The main reason why I applied for this scholarship is para maka help sa parents ko na

mabawasan yung expenses nila sakin for example yung allowance

(3) When it comes to my academics, financial support helps provide for my education needs,

such as books and other things I need to have in order to study.

39
(4) I no longer need to pay miscellaneous and tuitions fees to study in my chosen strand in

my current school. Yet, it is my responsibility to buy a uniform for the school. Other than

that, my other expenses will cover my allowance, my primary equipments and materials

to use in school, and contribution fees required to give in, such as in projects and

assignments that are formed in groupings.

(5) One of the things na pinoproblema usually is yung tuition fee ng school so it is highly

beneficial to those na nangangailangan dahil mababawasan yung problemahin nila.

(6) I think the purpose of providing financial assistance to STEM students is to help students

pay for their educational expenses (tuition, monthly allowance, etc.)

The National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented at the University of

Virginia conducted a 4-year qualitative case study in three very different school

sites to explore how teachers contribute to the academic success of high potential,

low economic student. Among factors influencing student success in the three

schools were the nature of the school setting and its vision for low economic

students, the degree to which educators understood the academic and affective

needs of low economic students, the nature of curriculum, instruction, and

assessment in the classrooms, and attitudes about the role of the teacher in

supporting the success of low economic students.

2. How does the financial assistance program support the academic growth

of the STEM students?

40
Theme 1: Academic Resources. This theme encompasses the availability and

accessibility of academic resources that are made possible through financial

assistance programs. Participants noted that financial assistance helped them

acquire necessary academic resources that they would otherwise be unable to

afford. These inputs are revealed in the following responses:

(1) we all know na yung STEM is sobrang magastos niya at maraming kailangan na

bilhin like mga lab materials and yun yung isa sa mga purpose kung bakit mayroong

financial assistance and pangalawa hindi naman lahat ng student is mayaman or may

afford na ma-kapag aral at ma-sustained na maging STEM student.

(2) As a Stem student financial assistance benefits me by providing my financial needs in

school such as allowance, school expenses, food, and transportation.

(3) Well, as a stem student, there are a lot of things that I should provide for myself,

things that I need to buy for my education, so this is the benefit of financial

assistance; it will support my academic needs.

(4) The vitality of giving provision such as financial assistance to STEM students of

senior high school will lessen the burden for seeking funds of the STEM students.

(5) To have aid in with the financial hurdles of the student.

(6) Providing financial assistance to stem students opens more mobility to hold

opportunities to develop themselves and allows students to flourish without the need

to worry financially.

(7) By providing financial assitance to STEM students of senior high school, it can help

alleviate financial burden on their families.

41
(8) From the term itself, its purpose is to provide assistance to students na in-need ng

financial support para makapagaral.

(9) I think the purpose of providing financial assistance to STEM students is to help
students pay for their educational expenses (tuition, monthly allowance, etc.)

Our participants reported that providing financial aid to students can help address

both their academic needs and fees. As Mahuron (2019) notes, need-based

scholarships are highly valued and can not only enhance a student's resume, but

also provide essential support to cover the costs of their education.

Theme 2: Enrichment Opportunities/Programs. Financial assistance programs

can provide STEM students with opportunities to participate in academic

enrichment programs, attend conferences, or pursue research projects that are

otherwise inaccessible, leading to expanded learning experiences and academic

growth. Participants noted that these opportunities helped broaden their

knowledge and understanding of STEM-related fields. These findings are shown

in the following responses:

(1) For me the main purpose of providing financial assistance to STEM students is para

makatulong na sa mga gastusin sa mga kailangan na requirements ng isang STEM

student kasi we all know na yung STEM is sobrang magastos niya at maraming

kailangan na bilhin like mga lab materials and yun yung isa sa mga purpose kung bakit

mayroong financial assistance and pangalawa hindi naman lahat ng student is mayaman

or may afford na makapag aral at ma-sustained na maging STEM student.

42
(2) As a Stem student financial assistance benefits me by providing my financial needs in

school such as allowance, school expenses, food, and transportation.

(3) Financial support helps provide for my education needs, such as books and other things

I need to have in order to study.

(4) The main reason is to lessen the burden of my parents to accommodate my other fees in

my school, and also to use the opportunity to cover my other expenses and save the

money for my future.

(5) As a stem student, the financial assistance benefit has allowed me to access a well-

constructed curriculum and live in a student-friendly environment at our school without

the need to spend as much.

(6) By providing financial assitance to STEM students of senior high school, it can help

alleviate financial burden on their families.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2023), scholarships

have been proved to reduce the financial burden of attending school. Scholarships

can directly cut out-of-pocket expenses for students pursuing higher education

by covering financial gaps.

Theme 3: Reduced Financial Burden. This theme describes how financial

assistance programs help to reduce the financial burden on STEM students and

their families. Many participants expressed that the financial burden of pursuing

STEM education was one of their main concerns, and financial assistance

43
programs helped alleviate this burden. These data are clearly depicted in the

following statements:

(1) For me the main purpose of providing financial assistance to STEM students is para

makatulong na sa mga gastusin sa mga kailangan na requirements ng isang STEM

student kasi we all know na yung STEM is sobrang magastos niya at maraming

kailangan na bilhin like mga lab materials and yun yung isa sa mga purpose kung bakit

mayroong financial assistance and pangalawa hindi naman lahat ng student is mayaman

or may afford na makapag aral at ma-sustained na maging STEM student.

(5) One of the things na pinoproblema usually is yung tuition fee ng school so it is highly

beneficial to those na nangangailangan dahil mababawasan yung pproblemahin nila.

(6) the purpose of providing financial assistance to STEM students is to help students pay for
their educational expenses (tuition, monthly allowance, etc.)

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2023), scholarships

have been proved to reduce the financial burden of attending school. Scholarships

44
can directly cut out-of-pocket expenses for students pursuing higher education

by covering financial gaps.

Theme 4: Improved Confidence and Motivation. By providing support and

resources to help students succeed, the program helped students to feel more

confident in their abilities and more motivated to pursue their academic and

career goals. Participants expressed that financial assistance programs helped

them feel supported and encouraged in pursuing their STEM education and

career goals. The different views of the participants are manifested in the

following responses:

(1) the benefits of this is nakakatulong siya para mag grow ako and mas nakakatulong siya

para maging possible and maging buhay yung pangarap ko kasi usually dahil sa

kahirapan isa yun sa mga nag tutulak sa akin para wag na ituloy yung STEM kasi nga

sobrang hirap nito at sobrang magastos.

(2) Financial assistance programs can have a significant impact on my academic

performance as a STEM student in senior high. By providing much-needed support, these

programs can help students pursue their academic goals and achieve their full potential

by not worrying about financial constraints.

(3) As I mentioned, I haven't yet receive the money that I will get in my scholarship but it

already motivated and inspired me to do my best in studying and not take for a granted

45
the oppurtunity that the people gave to me as they chose me to be one of the scholars in

their program.

(4) It makes the student felt well supported to gain growth.

(5) The program's terms and conditions allowed me to discipline myself as a student and

allowed me to raise my goals and reach steps to improve my academic performance.

(6) I was able to fully immerse myself in my studies and develop the essential competencies

needed for me to excel academically. It also enabled me to achieve excellent academic

outcomes by providing me with the resources and support that are necessary in my

academic success.

(7) It supports the academic growth of a STEM students as financial assistance provides

opportunities for students to complete their education and to achieve their dreams in life.

It allows students to grow and develop as they help students to enhance their skills and

time to pursue extra-curricular activities.

(8) It helps support the academic growth of the student by pushing students to their best

capacities and explore new things.

"After conducting the interview, it was observed that not all participants held the

same viewpoint. Some reported feeling pressured, while others felt motivated.

As stated by Odmps (2022), awards and recognition can incentivize students to

work harder and with a more focused goal. When students feel that their talents

are recognized and valued, this can serve as a catalyst for them to improve their

performance."

46
Textural Description. After conducting in-depth interviews with the

participants, the researchers identified three key themes that describe the

experiences of providing opportunities for STEM students in senior high school

through financial assistance. Theme 1 highlights the importance of overcoming

financial barriers in accessing STEM education, as many students face significant

financial challenges when pursuing these fields. Theme 2 highlights the

important role that financial assistance plays in encouraging and supporting

students' interest in STEM education, as many students may not have access to

the resources, they need to pursue their passions while Theme 3 emphasizes the

importance of supporting academic success among STEM students, as financial

assistance can help to provide the necessary resources and support for students

to achieve their goals.

Structural Description. Theme 1 discussed how they need to budget their

money and about the accessibility of academic resources. Theme 2 showed what

are the opportunities that they can get because of the financial assistance

program. Theme 3 revealed financial assistance program help their family in

financial burden. The financial assistance program helped them to alleviate their

financial problems. Theme 4 showed what are the reasons why they feel more

47
motivated in their studies after receiving financial assistance. Students also says

in theme 4 that their confidence improved because of this program.

Essence. Having financial assistance is choice of a student. Some reasons of

students who applied financial assistance is to help their parents/family to avoid

burden of financial. They enjoyed the financial assistance because it also

challenged them in their knowledge, and it also helps them to be motivated in

studying harder. Some students improve themselves and also their confidence in

facing other people because having this financial assistance gives them more

opportunities to communicate with other people.

Recommendations

The following are offered as recommendations for possible actions:

1. Financial assistance programs for STEM students in Senior High School aim to provide

equal opportunities for students to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering,

and mathematics. The purpose is to bridge the gap between students who have the means to

pursue their passions and those who do not, by providing financial aid to those who are in

need.

2. The financial assistance program supports the academic growth of STEM students by

providing them with the necessary resources and tools to succeed in their studies. These may

include access to textbooks, computers, laboratory equipment, and other learning materials.

Additionally, the program may also offer mentoring and tutoring services to help students with

their coursework.

3. To ensure the success of the financial assistance program, it is important to involve the

participation of the STEM students themselves. Through focus group discussions or surveys,

the program can gather feedback from the students on what type of support they need the most

and what barriers they face in pursuing their STEM education.

4. The program should also have a clear and transparent process for selecting the recipients of

the financial aid. This may involve a needs-based assessment or an evaluation of the student's

academic performance and potential.

52
5. To further support the academic growth of STEM students, the program may also offer

opportunities for them to participate in research, internships, or other extracurricular activities

that can enhance their learning and skills.

6. The program should also be regularly evaluated and monitored to assess its effectiveness

and identify areas for improvement. This may involve collecting data on the academic

performance of the STEM students who receive financial assistance and comparing it with

those who do not.

7. Collaboration and coordination with other stakeholders, such as schools, government

agencies, and private organizations, can also enhance the success of the financial assistance

program. These partnerships can provide additional resources and support to the STEM

students, as well as broaden the reach of the program to more students in need.

8. Future research on the impact of financial assistance programs on the academic and career

outcomes of STEM students in Senior High School is encouraged. This can help validate the

effectiveness of the program and identify best practices for supporting the academic growth of

students in need of financial assistance.

DR. MARIVIC D. TANEDO

Director Senior High School

Dear Dr. Tañedo,

Perpetualite greetings!

We, Senior High School students of Perpetual Help College of Manila – JONELTA, are currently
conducting a research work entitled “The Experiences of Providing Opportunities for the Stem Students
of Senior High School through Financial Assistance.” is to explore and understand the experiences of
senior high school STEM students who have been provided financial assistance in pursuing their
education. The study aims to identify the impact of financial assistance on the academic and career
success of these students, as well as their overall well-being and quality of life. The findings of this study
may provide insights for educational institutions and policymakers in developing more effective programs
and policies that support the education and future success of STEM students.

Relative to this, we are asking for your permission to allow us to have ten (10) Grade 11 students to
