ARCH101 BASIC DESIGN I SPRING 2023-24

AYBU // FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND FINE ARTS// ARCHITECTURE

3-D Design Studies: Instructors:

Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlkay Dinç Uyaroğlu,
Assignment 1 Canan Seyhun (MArch, PhD Candidate)
Submission time: April 22, 2024 / 09.00

3-D Design Studies and related exercises are mainly based on the study of 3-D volumes and
volumetric relationships. In this sense, you will create a 3-D design based on a theme
generated from formal concepts of a selected artistic performance (theatre, ballet, traditional or
modern dance performances etc.)

At this first phase, for Assignment 1, you are expected to research and analyse on the formal
concepts of the performance and body movements by means of sketches, diagrams, and
collages. The music should also be considered in analyses. You are required to map the
concepts of the performance in a space into their design medium. The mapping procedure
includes abstraction that might exclude redundant parts.

You are expected to create a 3-D design model in relation to the initial ideas revealed by you in
sketches, diagrams and collages. Diagrammatic representation of form-based characteristics of
the body movements in the performance will guide you in creating a 3-D design. The basic
design principles mentioned below are also guiding tools for developing design concepts from
the initial stage to the end.

• basic design tools, methods, principles (among repetition, rhythm, emphasis, focal
point, hierarchy, proportion and scale, balance, contrast, movement, orientation, unity)
• organisation schemes (central, radial, linear, clustered, gridal)

Keywords: solid, void, mass, volume, plane, volume relationships, volume flow

Materials: Drawing materials.

For model making, you can use
Planar elements (Cardboard/ paper/ craft paper/ corrugated cardboard in
various thicknesses, thin metal plate, balsa sheet, chicken wire, fly mesh, elastic
fabric (stockings etc.), acetate, tracing paper, plastic sheet etc.)
Linear elements in various thicknesses (Rope, elastic rubber cord, wire,
fishing line, wood stick, balsa stick, wooden skewer etc.)

These materials should also be with you in every lesson.

It is strictly forbidden to use, spray adhesives (pattex and similar).
