Revolution 2-
1846- machine to produce 60 tin cans oer hour in tin can factories
1860- pasteurization developed by louis Pasteur for preservation of liquids especially milk. Increased
long term food storage and facilitated transportation of beverages
1890- biscuits were the first products to be individually packages by Nabisco to preserve crispiness
by creating a moisture barrier on the packaging.
1892- Invention of crown cork, a metal cork for beverage glass bottles
Early 1900s- spray drying, freeze drying, evaporation and vacuuming to prepare ready to eat food
packages and preserve foods for longer.
1907-first plastic based on synthetic polymer was invented by leo bakeland. It ould be shaped into
anything
1908- Use of cellophane, first flexble waterproof packaging to wrap and cover food.
Revolution 3-
1913- invention of monitor top refrigetors with steel body in home for keeping food cold
1940- temperature variation refrigetors with freezer for frozen foods and ice and a butter bin
1951- tetra pak invented by ruben rusing which revolutionized europe’s dairy industry and
refrigeration
1960- Aluminum cans introduced by Royal crown cola since they were easy to rpint graphcs on
1973- first plastic bottle that contained carbonated drinks. Cheaper alternative to glass.
1980- first biodegradable plastic food packaging by Japanese. They discovered a bacteria
(Flavobacterium) that broke down nylon in pools containing waste water from a nylon
factory.
Industry 4.0
2000- lg invented smart refrigetors which helped control from phones and controlling temperature
remotely
2019- water soluble packaging. Packaging made from polyvinyl alcohol which dissolves in hot water
once used. Works exactly like plastic cling film wrap.
RFID labelling labelling tracks crops from havesting anf tracks the orgin from cargo.
Environmental monitoring- using sensors to maintain the climate and temperatire of the storage
facilities.
Intelligent labelling- qr codes and bar codes which provides data about the food including shelf life,
packaging life, social sharing, wtc. Also helps in a cashless buy of the product.
