Hastings High School 520 W. South Street ~ Hastings, Michigan 49058 ~ Office (269) 948-4409 ~ Fax (269) 948-8081 June 6th Press Release: Re: Hastings High School Varsity Baseball Coach ‘On May 29th, 20024, concerns were brought to the District's attention alleging questionable behavior by Baseball Head Coach Jason Sixberry. The Hastings Area School System conducted a prompt yet thorough investigation into those allegations, which included interviewing players and parents as well as reviewing physical evidence (pictures and text). Based on the investigation, we have concluded that there is a preponderance of evidence that 1) Coach Sixberry regularly engaged in behavior that overstepped the boundaries of appropriate coach/player relationships. 2) Coach Sixberry inappropriately used social media and cell phone texting as a means of ‘communicating with players on matters not related to the baseball program. 3) Coach Sixberry regularly offered gift cards to players for reasons that are unclear, which is not only inappropriate but may also be an MHSAA rules violation. 4) Coach Sixberry often used inappropriate language when with players. While our investigation did not find any evidence of any incident we believe to be illegal or requiring a mandated report to Child Protective Services, we did find a preponderance of evidence of situations we believe to be inappropriate in @ healthy coach/player relationship. Therefore, Hastings Area School System will not renew his position as the Hastings Varsity Baseball Coach. Incoming Athletic Director Mike Mohn will begin the search for the Varsity Baseball Coach sometime in the near future. As always, our main concem is for the safety and suocess of our student-athletes and the development of quality sports programs.
