The start
Hello everybody, we’re group 6 with 4 members: Phan Anh, Văn Cường, Mai Chi, Anh
Bình. My team has one question: Do you know what month it is now? Yeahh, today is 29 of
December, the almost last day of the year 2023.Becoming the new year 2024, there will be
many meaningful celebrations so do you know what are there?
In today's presentation my team will ask the question of the above. Our topic is telling 3
celebrations in Vietnam, the Lunar New Year, the Mid-Autumn, and the Hung Kings
commemoration. We will discuss the meaning, the time to start, and many more activities of
celebrations.
HOW: We are happy to take any questions after that before starting our presentation
2, The body
★ The first celebration we want to mention is Tet. Tet’s meaning is the finish of
the old year and a welcome for a new year. It is the first and the most
important celebration in VietNam culture. The Tet season often lasts from the
beginning of January to the end of February. Through research on the internet,
we know Tet can be divided into three time periods:
○ Tat Nien (celebrations before the end of the year): when it is almost the
end of the year people often have many parties with family and friends
to review the memories of the past year or prepare for many new plans
○ Giao Thua (New Year’s Eve): When the clock reaches 12 am on
January 1 of the lunar calendar, every family will burn incense for
ancestors by rice tray or five-fruit tray
○ And the last time is The New Year
- When Tet comes, people have many interesting activities: making Chung cake,
receiving lucky money, “ xông nhà”, going to the pagoda, or visiting relatives and
friend
The second is the Mid-Autumn festival. The mid -autumn is also called the full
moon festival , it is a traditional festival for Vietnamese children. And it is often celebrated on
the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with full moon at night. There are 3 main
meanings of this festival:
+ Firstly, Gathering – this is one of the Vietnam festivals held at the time for family
and friend to reunite or harvest crops.
+ Secondly, Thanksgiving – people celebrate this festival to express their great thanks
for the good harvest, or harmonious unions.
+ Thirdly, Praying – this reflects the wishes of conceptual or material satisfaction.
I’d like to give you some background information about 5 signature activities in Mid-Autumn
in Viet Nam:
+ I will starter with Making eye-catching lanterns:Lanterns are one of the features
during the preparation period. Although there are colorful ready-made lanterns sold
on the streets, kids are more excited about making the lanterns themselves.
+ The second activity is Worship the God of Earth and commemorate the ancestors
.Let me explain more about that Mid Autumn Festival in Vietnam is the time for local
people to worship the God of Earth, as well as make offerings to their ancestors. The
offerings often include mooncakes, fruits, food, and joss paper. All family members
will gathe, and once the incense is burnt out, they can enjoy these offerings while
admiring the bright moon.
+ We are now going to enjoy watching lions dance and carry laterns. Lion Dancing,
or “múa lân”, is an indispensable part of the Vietnamese Full Moon Festival. A group
of dancers put on a giant lion costume and perform a fascinating lion dance with the
cheerful drums. And on the full moon nights, people carry lanterns and sing Mid-
Autumn melodies.
+ Lastly, I want to discuss a delightful activity that is eating mooncakes. The
mooncakes are round in shape, which is believed to represent luck, happiness, good
health, and prosperity.Mooncakes are considerably more delicious when shared with
loved ones, friends,etc..
In summary, I would like to streess that The Mid-Autumn Festival is incredibly meaningful
and fascinating not only for children but also for adults.
Last but not least, I would like to introduce about the Hung King Temple Festival.
Takes place in Phu Tho province, the festival is held very solemnly with traditional rituals
and attracts many domestic and international tourists to attend. It goes from the 8th to the
11th day of the third lunar month. In which, the 10th is the official festival.
The festival has two parts, the ceremony and the festival. It is an indispensable part for locals
and tourists. Each procession has all three palanquins going together. On it are displayed very
sophisticated and beautiful things, from the five-fruit tray to the decorations that show respect
and respect. There are many souvenir stalls or services serving people's entertainment needs
appear. Folk games are also organized such as wrestling, ferris wheel, rice cooking contest,
chess game, etc.
Coming here, visitors will be immersed in a solemn and respectful atmosphere. This festival
is the pride of Vietnamese people. It is to commemorate the first kings of our country.
3. The finish
So, that covers our main points about 3 popular celebrations in Vietnam. To summarise,
each celebration has its own meanings, as well as distinguished activities. Firstly, Tet is the
celebration of the beginning of a new year, which is believed to be a fresh start for everyone’s
career and dream. Next, the Mid-Autumn Festival is considered to be the second Children’s
Day, it represents Vietnamese people’s wish for fullness and prosperity. And finally, the
Hung Kings commemoration, like its name, is to commemorate the merits of the Vietnamese
first kings. In conclusion,... Thank you very much for your attention.
