Engage
The teacher will present two statements
which uses either an adverb of affirmation
or an adverb of negation. Then, the teacher
will let the students share their observation
on the given statements.

I want you to consider this situation.

Chelsea posted a status in Facebook sharing (The students will share their

cellphones in school. Afterwards, two of her
friends commented:

• I truly feel the same!

• I never experienced such thing!

What can you say about the comments of

her two Facebook friends?

Correct. The first statement expresses

affirmation about the status posted by
Chelsea as suggested by the word “truly”. By
saying truly, one friend of Chelsea agrees to
her statement. On the other hand, the
second statement conveys disapproval or
negation on the Facebook status of Chelsea
as implied by the word “never”. By saying
never, one friend of Chelsea disagrees to her
statement about the confiscation of
cellphones. This afternoon, we are going to
talk about the Adverbs of Affirmation and
Adverbs of Negation. These are our
objectives:
1. Identified the two types of adverbs;
2. Distinguished examples of the two
types of adverbs; and
3. Appreciated its usage by filling out
the appropriate adverb in a given statement.

Adverbs of Negation. These are mixed

groups and each of them will be given with a
paper containing various examples of
Adverbs of Affirmation and Adverbs of
Negation. By using their existing knowledge
of the two types of adverbs, the group will
create a T-Chart segregating the given
adverbs accordingly.

What was your basis when you were

categorizing the given adverbs?

important that you know what is adverb of
affirmation and adverb of negation because
these two help a lot in showing your
position or stand on a specific topic or point
of discussion.
Adverbs of Affirmation class, are used to tell
that an idea in a sentence is true.
For instance, when Chelsea posted a
Facebook status, one of her friends
commented that she truly feels the same.
Meaning, that friend of Chelsea agrees to the
idea that she presented. She believes that
what Chelsea is saying is true by affirming
that she feels the same way as Chelsea does.
Examples of Adverbs of Affirmation are:

absolutely definitely
surely
always doubtlessly
truly
affirmatively exactly
undoubtedly
certainly indeed
very
clearly positively

Meanwhile, Adverbs of Negation, are used to

tell that an idea in a sentence is false. In the
given example earlier, Chelsea’s friend
expressed her opposition or negation on
Chelsea’s idea by saying that she never
experienced what Chelsea had experienced.
The most common examples of these are:
Contradictorily never
rarely
Hardly no longer
scarcely
Invalidly not
seldom

Do you now understand the difference

between the two?
Very good. Again, Adverbs of affirmation
are used to tell that an idea in a sentence is
true. Adverbs negation are used to tell that
an idea in a sentence is false.
The Teacher will discuss the two types of
Adverbs: Adverb of Affirmation and Adverb
of Negation.
