Introduction
The language movement is one of the most important events of our Bangladeshi culture. This was the

first step towards the growth of Bangladeshi nationalism and for a unique and separate identity as a

Bangladeshi.

After the creation of Pakistan, from 14 August 1947 to 21 February 1952 the movement in east Pakistan
to make Bengali one of the state languages of Pakistan which was called language movement.

2. Background
The state of Pakistan was formed on 14 august, 1947 on the basis of biracialism. The two parts of
Pakistan had no similarity in respect of history, tradition, culture and language. The rulers from the west
Pakistan, had tried to impose Urdu as the state language. They declared Urdu as the state language of
Pakistan ignoring the opinion of the majority group. The scholars of Bengal strongly opposed this
discriminating decision. In this way, the language movement started to get its momentum. The agitation
reached its peak in 1952.

3. The Beginning of the movement


The language movement began on 21st February 1952 when students at Dhaka University organized a
protest against the government’s decision to make Urdu the only official language of Pakistan. The
students and the people from all walks of life were joined and the protest soon turned into a mass
movement.

4. Reason behind language movement


✓ Irrational decision to make Urdu the state language of Pakistan.
✓ Development of Bengali nationalism.
✓ The failures of the rulers to run the state.
✓ Tortures of Bengalis by the forces of Pakistan

5. The martyrs
On 21st February 1952, the police open fired on the protesters killing several people including Rafiq
Uddin Ahmed, Abdul Jabbar, Salam, Barkat & Shafiur Rahman. These individuals become known as the
“Language Martyrs” and are remembered as the Heroes of the movement.

6. International Mother Language Day


In 1999, the United Nations declared 21st February as the International Mother Language Day in
recognition of the Language Movement and its significance in promoting linguistic and cultural diversity.

It has been observed throughout the world since 21st February 2000.
7. Conclusion
The language movement of Bangladesh was a significant event in the history of the country. It was a
struggle for language and cultural identity, and it paved the way for the recognition of Bengali as an
official language.
