1.- PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of this procedure is to establish the general standards to be applied in the
radiographic inspection of the bodies and bonnets of valves manufactured by POYAM
Valves.

The extension and application of the inspection is undertaken in accordance with the
corresponding drawing or specification, covering the critical areas therein defined.

2.- APPLICABLE STANDARDS

ANSI B16.34, latest applicable edition

ASTM E-186, latest applicable edition
ASTM E-446, latest applicable edition
ASTM E-94, latest applicable edition
ASTM E-142, latest applicable edition
ASME Section V Article 2, latest applicable edition
ASNT SNT-TC-1A,1992 edition

3.- OPERATING METHOD

3.1. Qualification of personnel

All radiographic tests shall be performed by personnel qualified to at least level 1

personnel of the SNT-TC-1A Recommended Practice. Only personnel qualified to levels 2
or 3 shall be allowed to evaluate registered readings.

3.2. Surface preparation

The finish of surfaces to be inspected, and adjacent areas, must be such that there is no
room for doubt and no masking in the subsequent interpretation of the corresponding
radiographs.

Any superficial imperfection which may hinder the correct intepretation of the radiograph
must be removed prior to radiographic inspection.

3.3. Equipment and material

3.3.1. Radiation sources

The radiation source used is IR-192 and CO-60.

For thicknesses over 90 mm an encapsulated source of CO-60 is used.

3.3.2. Radiographic films

The films used are fine grain and high contrast.

The type and size selected depend on the thickness to be radiographed, the geometry and
the radiation source.

3.3.3. Intensifying screens

Only lead intensifying screens can be used, every effort must be made to ensure close
contact with the film.

Screen thickness shall be as follows:

Front Middle Rear

(3) Co-60 0.25 mm 0.15 mm 0.25 mm

Ir-192 0.15 mm 0.10 mm 0.15 mm

(2) As an alternative, the use of vacuum-sealed, built-in lead screen films, such as Agfa
Vacupac and Kodak Contactpak is also acceptable.

3.3.4. Penetrameters (I.Q.I.)

Image quality indicators shall comply with the requirements set out in ASTM E-142.

The image quality indicator material must be radiographically similar to the material to
be inspected.

(1) The name, thickness and diameter of the holes and the IQI dimensions shall comply
with the requirements set out in ASTM E-1025. The IQI is always selected according to
2% of the thickness of the area to be radiographed.

3.3.5. Identification

Lead letters and numbers are used for identification, they may be placed on the piece
itself, or on blocks made of material similar to that under inspection.

3.3.6. Frames

The film and intensifying screens are placed in flexible frames.

For exposure the frames are placed in contact with the piece to be radiographed.

3.3.7. Negatoscope

For the interpretation and evaluation of the films, high intensity lighting equipment which
enables the viewing of films within the range of densities specified, is used.

3.4. Radiographic technique

Radiographs are obtained by the transmission method, where the piece to be radiographed
is placed between the film and the radiation source.

In all cases the technique used should be capable of indicating the presence of defects. The
penetrameter number corresponding to the thickness and the technique- applied is used to
calculate radiographic sensitivity.

(1) 3.5. Geometric penumbra

Geometric penumbra is calculated using this formula:

Sxt
Gp =
D

where: S= Source size (optically efficient size)

t= Material thickness
D= Source-object distance

The geometric penumbra rating must not exceed 1% of the maximum thickness as seen in
the radiograph, or 1.78mm, whichever is less.

Material thickness Max. penumbra

t < 50’8 mm 0,51 mm

50’8 < t < 76’2 mm 0,76 mm
76’2 < t < 101’6 mm 1,02 mm
t > 101’6 mm 1,78 mm

(1) 3.6. Source-film distance

It must be suitable to ensure both correct geometric penumbra and compliance with
quality stipulations.

3.7. Density

Film density in the areas to be inspected shall be as follows:

- For single film, between 2 and 4.

- For double film, between 2 and 4. Minimum density for each film is 1,3.
- Density can be measured by comparison with a standard film densitometer or by
meansof a calibrated electronic densitometer.

(1)(3) 3.8. Radiographic quality level

Unless otherwise specified the grade of film quality is assessed by observing the
corresponding penetrameter hole according to ASME, section V, chart T-276, being 2-2T.

3.9. Position and number of penetrameters

Whenever possible the I.Q.I. is placed on the source side and on the area to be inspected,
otherwise it may be placed on adjacent blocks.

When it is impossible to place it on the source side, it may be placed on the film side, and
the letter F, in lead, is placed next to the penetrameter.

As a general rule, the penetrameter is placed on the area of interest, or next to it.
Alternatively, it may be placed on a block of similar thickness and material to the piece
being radiographed.

Normally only one penetrameter is used, except in cases where different thicknesses cause
different densities, between -15% and +30%. In these cases two penetrameters are used,
one is placed in the thickest area and the other in the thinnest area. (The I.Q.I. ratio is in
line with the thickness to be radiographed).

Scattered radiation control. A letter "B" in lead, 12 mm high and 1,6 mm thick is placed
on the rear side of the film frame in order to detect scattered radiation. If the letter "B" is
detected in the radiograph as lighter than the background, it is regarded as unacceptable.
The exposure is repeated, and this time the thickness of the lead in the rear screen is
increased, in order to eliminate the scattered radiation.

3.10. Film data

Unless otherwise stated, the following information at least should appear on each
radiograph.

- Work number or piece number

- Radiograph number and sector number
- Date
- Initials of the company undertaking the work.

(2) 3.11. Location marks

Location marks which are required on the radiographic film must be placed on the piece,
not the film frame. Sufficient evidence must be provided to show on the radiographic film
that what has been marked on the piece has been successfully achieved.

Location marks must be made as follows:

a) Single vision: source-side marks

- On flat components or longitudinal joints on cylindrical or conical components.

- Curved or spherical components whose concave side is on the source side and
when the "source-piece" distance is less than the inside radius of the component.

- Curved or spherical components whose convex side is on the source side.

b) Single vision: film-side marks

- When radiographing curved or spherical components whose concave side is on

the source side and when the "source-piece" distance is more than the inside
radius of the component.

c) Single vision: marks on either side

- When radiographing curved or spherical components whose concave side is on

the source side and when the "source-piece" distance is the same as the inside
radius of the component.

d) Double vision:

- At least one location mark must be placed next to the welding, in the area
concerned.

3.12. Film processing

Processing is automatic,it is controlled by a processor, which automatically maintains the

chemical composition, the temperature and the regeneration of the solutions.

The mechanical transport of the film is executed by careful control of the speed of each
cycle.

Manufacturers´instructions must always be followed.

3.13. Evaluation

All radiographic evaluation results are compiled in the Radiographic Report", which is
attached to the corresponding radiographs. The layout should follow the example attached.

Acceptance levels shall comply with the radiographic standards of ASTM E-446 and
ASTM E-186, depending on the thickness radiographed and in accordance with ASME
B16.34, Appendix I.
