OPERATING PRINCIPLES
Self positioning
• Does not require external positioning system 3D laser scanner

• Position of the scanner, in relation to the part, is

determined by triangulation (in real-time)

• Reference is linked to the part, since targets are

affixed to it

• Part can be moved during data acquisition

OPERATING PRINCIPLES
Surface Acquisition:
Real Time Surface
• Automatic surface generation Rendering
─ Live meshing → What you see is what you
get

• Laser projected on the object is deformed

according to the shape of the object
─ While scanning, the cameras record this
particular shape and calculate it
OPERATING PRINCIPLES
• Visibility of the laser lines is greatly influenced by the color
and the material type
─ High reflectivity can lead to a mirror effect which makes it difficult to read the
laser lines on the part
─ Black color absorbs the light and therefore makes it difficult to read because of a
lack of contrast
• Some acquisition parameters can be adjusted in order to
counteract the effect of black, highly-reflective, and
transparent objects
─ Scanner shutter time should be adjusted accordingly
• Good part preparation will also lead to better results
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
• ISO 17025 compliance

CALIBRATION
CALIBRATION
Why & When ?
• To ensure good data quality, calibration
is recommended before every project
and whenever you experience
temperature changes or bad surface
quality

• Available in the Smart Control for quick

start!
CALIBRATION
Best Practice
• No targets near the calibration plate
• If possible, leave the calibration plate inside the case
• Make sure that no reflective objects are near the
calibration plate
• Make yourself comfortable to perform calibration
• Detection of a false, damaged or misplaced target is
likely to cause the calibration to fail

Calibration result should be:

• < 0.043 mm for HandySCAN BLACK
• < 0.035 mm for HandySCAN BLACK | Elite
Calibration under direct sunlight is not recommended since it could affect the reading of it by the scanner and could not work.
CALIBRATION
How?
• Align the scanner with its shadow and follow the 15 positions
CALIBRATION
How?
• Position 1 towards the calibration plate barcode
• Measurements 2 to 11 at different heights normal to
the calibration plate
• Measurements 12-13 using right and left angles
• Measurements 14-15 using forward and back
angles
SYSTEM VALIDATION

• Acceptance Test
─ As specified in the ISO 10360 standard, Creaform performs an acceptance test before
delivery of the system to certify that it meets the specifications. Creaform does not guarantee
the performance of its equipment outside the scope and timing of the aforementioned test
since the equipment is outside its control or supervision.

• Reverification Test
─ In order to validate that the system complies with specified requirements, ISO 10360
standard recommends to perform a reverification test periodically. Customer has the
responsibility to determine the frequency of this test. Creaform recommends, as a
starting point, to perform this reverification annually.

• Interim Check
─ The ISO 10360 standard recommends to perform an interim check between periodic
verifications to demonstrate the probability that the system complies with specified
requirements. The customer must take into account the interim check results to assess if a
reverification test needs to be executed at one of the Creaform service centers.

CREATING THE POSITIONING
MODEL
PART PREPARATION
• Add powder
─ Required for transparent parts
─ Can be useful for shiny surface in some occasions
─ HandySCAN BLACK is efficient on shiny and black Shutter  2-3 ms
surfaces with proper shutter adjustment
• Apply targets on the part
─ Distance: between 20 mm and 100 mm (~0.8-4 inches)
─ Flat zones: less targets needed
─ Curved zones: more targets needed
─ Do not add too many targets – it’s easier to add targets
In general for larger part you
than to remove them
can use the “rock’n’roll rule ☺
PART PREPARATION
Target issues
Avoid:
• Adding targets on high curvature surfaces

• Adding targets close to edges/details (< 3-4

mm)

• Using damaged or incomplete targets

• Using greasy, dusty, dirty or hidden targets

PART PREPARATION
To achieve proper triangulation, do not:
• Group targets

• Align targets on a perfect line / never rely only on a

single line
USING THE ENVIRONMENT
Apply targets around the part
• When the part is too small
• When it is not possible to put targets directly
on it
• To facilitate tracking of the scanner when 90 ˚ Brackets

scanning complex parts

Make sure the relative position of the targets in

the environment and the part remains • Using corner brackets helps the
unchanged throughout the scanning process scanner position itself especially when
scanning at an angle and helps create
a proper setup.
USING THE ENVIRONMENT
SETUP
• Make sure the relative position of the
targets in the environment and the part
remain unchanged throughout the
scanning process

• Use hot glue for a solid set-up

• Tape could be used to protect the part

PART PREPARATION – POWDER
To facilitate the acquisition when working with black, highly-reflective, or
transparent parts:

• Use these products/operations when necessary:

─ Spot check SKD-S2 Developer
• http://www.magnaflux.com/Distributors/tabid/398/Default.aspx

─ Masking tape
─ Paint
─ Sandblasting
PART PREPARATION – POWDER
Method #1
• Spray the part
• Clean up the spots where you want to put
targets
─ Target does not stick well over powder
• Apply targets
• Scan the part
PART PREPARATION – POWDER
Method #2
• Apply targets on the part
• Put masking tape bands on each target
• Spray the part
• Remove the masking tape bands
• Scan the part
HANDS-ON
PART PREPARATION
• Your turn to try!
BEFORE SCANNING

• Choose the right target type in Positioning Parameters

─ HandySCAN BLACK is compatible with 3 mm target, and it
is recommended for small part (30 cm or less)

Target Diameter

Target Reflectivity

• It’s important to choose the right target reflectivity:

─ The cameras detection of the targets is optimized for each type of target reflectivity. Therefore, target type (normal/high)
should never be mixed.
─ The accuracy is optimized for one or the other, not both target types at the same time.
SCANNING OPTIONS
• The scanner acquires the surface and
positioning targets and the output is a
mesh
Scan

• The scanner only acquires the positioning

targets and the output is a model that can
be saved as a .txt file
Scan
SCANNING POSITIONING TARGETS
Field of View & Stand-Off Distance
• Always maintain the appropriate distance
─ 30 cm

30 cm / (12’’)
─ Distance meter based on target, stay in the
green

• Look at the Observed Target Count: 6 targets

should be the minimum!

Scanning targets is faster than scanning surfaces.

SCANNING POSITIONING TARGETS
Distance meter / Observed target
• While scanning, targets are displayed in different
colors to indicate the distance between the
scanner and the surface of the object
─ Red → too close
─ Green → proper distance
─ Blue → too far

• White targets are acquired but not detected at

that time

• Grey targets provide a view from behind

SETUP: TARGETS ACQUISITION
• As more and more targets are recorded, the cumulative error increases
following the path of the scanner
• It is critical to pay attention how this path is acquired. Example with a car
door:
1.3m
➢ 2 points
➢ Path length : 4.4m
➢ Cumulative error between
0.8m 1.3 the points : up to 0.196 mm
m

1m
SETUP: TARGETS ACQUISITION
Spider web technique
• Using the spider web technique will decrease the cumulative errors when acquiring the targets
• The goal is to minimize the trajectory between two points when acquiring the entire model
• The error needs to be spread to the extremities

➢ Same 2 points
➢ Max Path length : 1.6m
1,6
m ➢ Cumulative error between
the points : up to 0.084mm
SETUP: SPIDER WEB TECHNIQUE
▪ Start from the center and move towards the corners
SCANNING POSITIONING TARGETS
Optimize volumetric accuracy – Activated
with Standard or Custom Finalize parameters
• After scanning the targets, select the Optimize Volumetric
Accuracy check box & Finalize
─ Recommended for larger scans (prior the surface scan)
─ This assists in obtaining a more accurate model (it will
optimize the positioning model)
• At the end of the surface acquisition
─ For optimal accuracy
SCANNING POSITIONING TARGETS
• To save the positioning targets as a .txt
file

• To import an existing positioning target

model into the session

• Selection tools are available in the 3D

viewer to select specific positioning
targets
SCANNING POSITIONING TARGETS
• Once selected, positioning targets can be deleted by right-clicking on selected
targets in the project tree and then clicking the Delete Targets button

After surface scan

Targets can also be

deleted after the
surface acquisition
using the “select
target with surface”
tool activated.

ACQUISITION RULES – DISTANCE METER
• While scanning, the laser lines projected on the object are displayed in
different colors to indicate the distance between the scanner and the
surface of the part
• LED located on the upper part of the scanner also indicates distance
ACQUISITION RULES
Classic Distance Meter Good Too close Too far
• Distance meter is displayed on the left of the
screen while scanning
• Option available in the display tab of the
navigation panel:
─ Clear the check box below to use the classic
distance meter

Project distance meter on scan Observed targets will be

red and will not change color
based on scanner distance.
ACQUISITION RULES
Best Practice – Stand-off distance
• User should stay in the green range scanning distance for easier and faster
data acquisition

• The scanner will not be able to acquire data if it is too close or too far from
the part to scan

• If tracking is lost, reposition the scanner in front of an already scanned

surface or add targets
ACQUISITION RULES
Best Practice – Scanner
Orientation
• Scanner must be as perpendicular as
possible to the surface

• It is possible to scan at an angle. However,

the accuracy of the positioning model will be
lower with greater angles of incidence.
ACQUISITION RULES
Accelerometer
• Better 3D visualization

• Accelerometer stops around

30°
─ Turning the scanner upside down
won’t make the scan turn upside
down on the screen
ACQUISITION RULES
All laser lines
• Project laser lines on the area to scan. Data will be acquired
only if both cameras can see the laser (Stereo mode).

Best orientation Acceptable orientation

ACQUISITION RULES
Edge/wall transition :
• Always align the handle of the scanner with an edge to make a good transition

ACQUISITION RULES
Outside Scanning
• The scanner performance allows the scan to be
done under sunlight, even for black and shiny
surfaces
─ Laser lines might be hardly visible on the surface, but
acquisition works fine

• However, calibration should not be done under

direct sunlight
ACQUISITION RULES
Single Laser Line mode
• Double-click on scan button during scan
to switch between 7 laser crosses and a
single line

Scan button

MERGE SCANS
Merge multiple scans together if:
• Many scanners are used to scan the same part
• A project requires a lot of RAM and has to be split into
several sessions
• A complex part is scanned in more than one session
─ For small part use the Small Part Guided Workflow
MERGE SCANS
Methods & Parameters
• Targets Best-fit
─ VXelements uses the common target on the part
from each scan to align the files together

• Surface Best-fit
─ VXelements best-fits each scan using a pre-
alignment done by the user (usually when there’s not
enough common targets on the part)

• Global registration
─ VXelements optimizes the global alignment between
3 or more scans, best-fitting them all together
instead of one by one
