epoc Blood Analysis System

eDM Lite User Guide


The eDM Lite software is a simple data management application that supports the
epoc® Blood Analysis System. It is intended to provide simple system maintenance and
data management functionality for installations using a small number of epoc Blood
Analysis devices. eDM Lite software can:
• Store patient and QA test results transmitted from epoc Blood Analysis System over Bluetooth® or
Wi-Fi connections
• Manage and print epoc blood, QA, Thermal QA and Electronic QC test results
• Update epoc Blood Analysis System software
• Update epoc Electronic Value Assignment Datasheets (eVADs)
• Export epoc blood and QA test results to a PDF or CSV file
• Export test results to an HL7 formatted text file
• Automatically print test results to a printer
• Perform daily backups of eDM Lite database

Hardware and Software Requirements


Note: Installation and use of eDM Lite software requires a Windows® user account with administrator
permissions.
The eDM Lite software may be installed on a standard desktop or laptop computer that meets the
following minimum specifications:
• Microsoft® Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 (32-bit or 64-bit English-based editions) updated to their
respective latest service packs that includes .NET Framework 4.6
• 1 GHz or faster, 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
• 1 GB (minimum) RAM
• 1 GB (minimum) of available hard disk space
• Display adapter with minimum resolution of 1024 x 768
• Network adapter
• Bluetooth adapter (required if Bluetooth communication with epoc Hosts is desired)
• Wi-Fi adapter (required if Wi-Fi communication with epoc Hosts is desired)
Optional Third-Party Software
Other third-party applications may be used to view reports and documents created by eDM Lite software:
• Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® to view PDF files created by the application
• Microsoft Excel® (2003 or later) to view CSV formatted files created by the application
• Text editor (e.g. Microsoft Notepad®) to view text files created by the application

Installing eDM Lite Software
Note: Installing eDM Lite software requires a Windows user account with administrator permissions.
1. Plug the USB Flash Drive into an available USB port.
2. Using Windows Explorer, find the EDMLiteSetup.exe file located on the USB Flash Drive.
3. Run the EDMLiteSetup.exe program.
Note: Some facilities have IT security policies that restrict software installations directly from USB Flash
drives. It may be necessary to first copy the EDMLiteSetup.exe file to your Desktop and run it from there.
4. Select Install (Fig. 1) then click Next.
5. Follow the instructions on each page and
click Next until setup is complete.
6. On the last page, click Finish, and eDM
Lite software will run (Fig. 2).

Upgrading eDM Lite Software
1. Download the latest eDM Lite upgrade
installer (EDMLiteUpgrade.exe) from the
Siemens Laboratory Diagnostics Document
Library. To access Siemens Laboratory
Diagnostics Document Library, refer to
Product Update 51015868.
Note: The upgrade file is available for download
in a zipped format. Please ensure the file is
unzipped/decompressed before attempting an
upgrade.
2. Run the EDMLiteUpgrade.exe installer on
the computer that has an earlier version of
eDM Lite already installed.

3. Select Update (Fig. 3), then click Next.
4. Follow the instructions on each page and click Next until setup is complete.
5. On the last page, click Finish. eDM Lite will run with all results and settings preserved (Fig. 4).

Uninstalling eDM Lite Software
• Run the EDMLiteSetup.exe program.
• Select Remove (Fig. 5) then click Next.
• Follow the instructions on each page and
click Next until eDM Lite software is
uninstalled.

Note: To keep a backup copy of the eDM Lite


database, make sure Backup tests database is
checked (Fig. 6).

eDM Lite software has a convenient user interface that displays the list of test records on the left and the
selected record’s test results on the right (Fig. 7). See below for the details.

1. Toggle between Patients tests and QA tests: using the radio buttons on the top
of the screen.

2. Search for tests by using the Find field: Enter a Patient ID (for blood) or
Lot ID (for QA), Operator ID, Host name, Reader name, Host serial number, Reader serial number,
or test status to narrow your search.

3. Select the From and To dates:


to view tests within the specified date range.

4. Tests records for the selected date range will be displayed in the Tests table (Fig. 8) and arranged in
five columns: Date / Time, Patient ID (QA Lot), epoc Host, epoc Reader, Status. Use context menu
pop-up to conveniently print or export the records.

5. Click on a test record to display the test results in the Results table.
Note: Test results are displayed in the same format, with the same units and ranges, as received from the
epoc Host.

6. Additional test record information is found below the Results table in expandable boxes (Fig. 10).

Saving and Printing Test Records
eDM Lite software provides the ability to save an individual test result as a PDF file or send it directly to a
printer. Series of test records can be saved as a CSV file and imported into a spreadsheet to use with
software such as Microsoft Excel. See Fig. 11 and details below.

1. To start, highlight the individual test record you wish to save or print.

2. Save the record as a PDF document file by clicking the PDF icon in the toolbar on the top of the
screen.

3. Print the record clicking on the Printer icon in the toolbar on the top of the screen. To enable
the auto-print feature, go to General Settings Automatic printing (see below for details).

4. Alternatively, save the entire displayed range of results as a CSV file by clicking the CSV icon in
the toolbar on the top of the screen. All tests between the From and To dates will be saved.

Viewing Thermal QA Data
Thermal QA is performed in the epoc Reader. These data can be reported and accessed for viewing.
Click Thermal QA Records in the top right corner of the main screen to view Thermal QA data for each
epoc Reader. The records will appear in a pop-up window (Fig. 12).

Viewing Electronic QC Data


Electronic Quality Control is performed in the epoc Reader before each test is performed. These data can
be accessed for viewing.
Click EQC records in the top right corner of the main screen to view electronic QC data for each epoc
Reader. The records will appear in a pop-up window (Fig. 13).

Configuring eDM Lite Software


This section describes the configuration settings available in eDM Lite software. To configure the eDM Lite
software, click on Settings in the top right corner of the screen. The Settings window (Fig. 14) provides
configuration options for the following:

• Facility information – Enter facility information that will appear in printed reports
• Connect epoc Hosts – Connect to eDM Lite software using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
• Update epoc Hosts with the latest epoc System Software
• eVAD update – Load the latest eVAD file to eDM Lite
• Automatic printing – Automatically print each new test record to a printer
• Export results – Enable exporting results to an HL7 formatted file
• Data backup – Enable backups of the eDM Lite database
• Support – Enable logging in the event troubleshooting is necessary

Facility Information
1. Click on Facility information (Fig. 14) to enter the facility name and address that you wish to
appear on printed reports.
2. Select the desired language.
Note: eDM Lite interface is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Simplified
Chinese, and Japanese.

Connect epoc Hosts
The eDM Lite software can be configured to allow epoc Host connections using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth wireless
technologies. In the Settings window, click on Connect epoc Hosts link (Fig. 15) to configure Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth connectivity.

The Status bar located at the bottom of the main window (Fig. 15) will indicate the connection status for
both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
• A green circle in the Link status indicates that the eDM Lite software is ready for epoc Host
connections on the corresponding connection type.
• A red circle in the Link status indicates that the eDM Lite software is NOT ready for epoc Host
connections on the corresponding connection type. This may be the case if the Link is not configured
or an error has occurred.

Configuring eDM Lite Software for epoc Host Wi-Fi Connections

1. Check the box next to Allow epoc Hosts to connect using Wi-Fi.
2. Select the IP Address of the computer on which eDM Lite software is running.
3. The default Port in the eDM Lite software is 12346 and should be sufficient for most installations.
Note: Consult your facility’s IT department for help choosing a port number.
4. Click Save to save the setting.
Note: The Save button becomes active only if the address or port is changed.
5. The Status field will indicate that the eDM Lite software is listening on the configured IP
address:Port
6. The eDM Lite software is now ready for epoc Hosts to connect over Wi-Fi.

Note: Refer to applicable epoc Host Quick Start Guide (document 51001684 or 51005527) for
information on connecting epoc Hosts to eDM Lite software when using wi-fi.

Configuring eDM Lite Software for epoc Host Bluetooth Connections

1. Check the box next to Allow epoc Hosts to connect using Bluetooth.
2. Select the Bluetooth address of the Bluetooth adapter installed on the eDM Lite computer.
3. Click Save to save the setting.
Note: The Save button becomes active only if the address is changed.
4. The Status field will indicate that the eDM Lite system is listening on the configured Bluetooth
address.
Note: A barcode is available to simplify entering the Bluetooth address into the epoc Host configuration
screen. Copy this barcode to the clipboard and paste it to a document. Use the document’s printout to scan
the Bluetooth address into your epoc Host’s configuration screen.
Note: Bluetooth may work slower than wi-fi. The Host device must be within 10 meters (30 feet) from eDM
Lite computer.

Connecting epoc Hosts to eDM Lite Software When Using Bluetooth

1. Log in as Administrator.

2. Select ToolsOptionsEDM Options.

3. Set EDM present? to Yes.

4. For EDM Address, scan the printed barcode or enter the


Bluetooth address manually.

5. Ignore the port number (Bluetooth only).

6. Tap the Save icon .

Updating epoc Host Software


eDM Lite software provides the ability to easily update epoc Host software.

Loading epoc Host Upgrade File in eDM Lite Software


To load epoc Host upgrade file,
1. Click Settings in the top right corner to open the settings page.
2. Click on Update epoc Hosts (Fig. 19).
3. Click on the icon to browse for the desired upgrade file.
4. Click Load upgrade file.
5. Alternatively, click Download upgrade file to download it from epoc Live Update Service.

6. The Upgrade File Verification message box will
open (Fig. 20), containing the following
information:
• epoc Host software version
• epoc Reader software version
• Sensor configuration
7. Verify that the upgrade file contains the
desired software versions.
8. Click OK to load the selected file or Cancel to
ignore the selection.

Note: A warning message will appear if the selected upgrade file is invalid or contains an older software
version than the one currently loaded.

Updating your epoc Host Software
To update your epoc Host software:
1. Log in as Administrator.
2. Select ToolsPerform upgradeFrom EDM (Fig. 21).
3. The epoc Host will receive the upgrade file from the eDM Lite software (Fig 22).
Note: Using Bluetooth, it may take up to 3 min to receive a software upgrade.

4. Tap the icon at the top right corner of the screen (Fig. 23) to initiate the upgrade.
The epoc Host will reboot and upgrade the software.

5. When the login screen appears, verify that the new software version is now running (Figs. 24-25).

Updating epoc Electronic Value Assignment Datasheets (eVADs)
To load an eVAD file,
1. Click Settings in the top right corner to open the settings page.
2. Click on eVAD update (Fig. 26).
3. Click on the icon to browse for the desired eVAD file.
4. Click Load eVAD file.
5. Alternatively, click Download eVAD file to download it from epoc Live Update Service.
Note: The versions and file names in the images below are examples only.

6. The eVAD File Verification message box will open (Fig. 27) containing the following information:
• eVAD filename
• Sensor configuration
• Corresponding VAD PDF file
7. Verify that the desired eVAD file is loaded.
8. Click OK to load the selected eVAD file or
Cancel to ignore the selection.
Note: A warning message will appear if the
selected eVAD file is invalid.

9. Synchronize all epoc Hosts to receive the new eVAD file.


10. Verify that the epoc Host has loaded the desired eVAD file in the epoc Host information page
(Figs. 28-29).

Automatically Printing Test Records
eDM Lite software provides an auto-print feature that, when enabled, will automatically send every new
test record received by the eDM Lite software to the pre-selected printer.
To enable the auto-print feature:
1. Click Settings in the top right corner to open the settings page.
2. Click on Automatic printing (Fig. 30).
3. Check the box labeled Automatically print received test records.
4. Select the printer where the test records will be sent,
Note: Only printers configured in Microsoft Windows will appear in the printers list.
OR
Select the location for saving as a PDF file.
5. Click on Save to save the settings.

Exporting Results to HL7 Formatted File
eDM Lite Software can export test results to an HL7-formatted text file to a designated folder that can be
read by a third-party application such as an LIS or HIS. Enabling this setting will display an additional
column in the Test Table (Fig. 31) called Export.

To configure these settings:
1. Click Settings in the top right corner to open the settings page.
2. Click on Export results (Fig. 32).
3. Check the box labeled Allow exporting test results to an HL7 formatted text file.
4. Select the desired options and tap Save to save the settings.

Data Backup
eDM Lite software Data backup settings (Fig. 33) allows users to enable daily backups of eDM Lite
database to a preferred location.

Support
eDM Lite software Support settings should remain set to the default values (Fig. 34) and should not be
changed unless requested by Technical Services to assist with more detailed eDM Lite software
troubleshooting.
Warning: Changing these settings may significantly increase disk space usage and affect application
performance. Use only when advised by Technical Services to assist with eDM Lite software
troubleshooting.

Retrieving epoc Raw Data Files


eDM Lite software saves epoc System raw data files transmitted from each epoc Host. These data files can
be used by Technical Services while troubleshooting epoc System issues. These raw data files are stored
on the eDM Lite computer in the following folder (Fig. 35 below):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Epocal\EDM Lite\deviceFiles\epoc.
In a case of a technical problem, Technical Services may request these raw data files.

The epoc folder will contain log files grouped by year. Find the year requested by Technical Services. If
necessary, open the folder to select a particular week. Zip the requested folder as shown in Fig. 35 and
send it to Technical Services.
