Lahore, 5900

Dear Muhammad Zain,

Congratulations! I am very pleased to inform you of your admission to the Chemistry Graduate Program of
the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston for Chemistry, PHD. We look
forward to having you join us and contribute to our dynamic and stimulating intellectual environment. Details
of the UH Chemistry Graduate Degree Programs can be found in our department's website (
www.chem.uh.edu).
As a program, we try to ensure all UH Chemistry PhD graduate students have a full level of financial support
in their first year. The financial support we offer includes: a Teaching Graduate Assistantship for 12 months,
with a monthly stipend of $2326.22 ($27914.64/yr); a Graduate Tuition Fellowship ($8853/year) to cover in-
state tuition and other mandatory fees. The Graduate Assistantship requires that you enroll as a full-time
student (minimum of 9 credit hours), and that also qualifies non-Texas residents and international students
to a waiver of the non-resident tuition ($10920/yr). The total Graduate Assistantship (stipend plus tuition and
fees) for your first year (AY 2024-25) is indicated in the TA agreement form.
Please note that your first paycheck will arrive on Oct. 1 (or the first business day in
October). Your first monthly stipend is for the working period of September 1 to September
30.
Continuation of your Graduate Assistantship and Graduate Tuition Fellowship awards is contingent on
enrollment as a full-time student in the fall and spring semesters, being able to maintain a minimum
cumulative grade point average of 3.00 every semester, and your satisfactory progress in the program.
In the coming months you will receive information regarding the Chemistry Graduate Orientation
Program and the Diagnostic Examinations. Initial graduate advising will be provided during the New
Student Orientation Program, two weeks prior to the start of the fall semester. You are required to
be campus and attend the New Student Orientation. If you anticipate a change in address,
please notify Ms. Baccam immediately by e-mail, [email protected], so these items are
not delayed.
Now that you have been accepted to a graduate program, you are likely eligible to apply for some graduate
scholarships and fellowships. Many of these can be applied for before beginning graduate school. For links
to search engines and the details for a variety of fellowships, including those specific to Science and
Mathematics, please see the External Funding section on the UH Graduate Funding Webpage.
If you are an international applicant who requires a Form I-20 for your F-1 visa, please note that the I-20
request will be processed as soon as you have accepted the admissions offer and submitted all required
documents. International students must have health insurance while studying at UH. Upon matriculating at
UH, you will be automatically enrolled in the UH student health insurance program. You may be eligible for a
waiver if you have your own health insurance from your home country. We strongly recommend that you
consult the university website to familiarize yourself with the conditions required for a health insurance
waiver (http://www.uh.edu/healthcenter/insurance/international-student-health-insurance-
requirements/index.php).
Domestic and eligible noncitizen are required to complete and submit the FAFSA form (Free Application for
Federal Student Aid) in order to receive the Graduate Tuition Fellowship. More information can be found on
Graduate Funding - University of Houston (uh.edu). Other Texas resident students who have filled out the
FAFSA form and have demonstrated financial needs may be eligible for the Graduate School Fund, which
helps defray some of the tuition costs.
Your myUH ID (PS ID) is listed above, and it is important because it is your direct connection to managing a
wide range of student activities and services - including enrollment in courses, viewing grades, making
payments, viewing academic records, and much more. You can familiarize yourself with your myUH portal
by going to myUH.uh.edu.
It is the policy of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics that all graduate students must maintain
continuous enrollment in every Fall and Spring semester. University policy requires that MS students
complete their degree within five years of the date of initial enrollment and that PhD students complete their
degree requirements within ten years. As specified by the State of Texas, PhD students must complete all
degree requirements within 100 PhD semester credit hours or be prepared to pay premium tuition for the
additional hours.
Please note, before enrollment in Fall 2024, all new graduate students must submit official proof of a
completed bachelor’s degree. Students who have earned a three-year bachelor's degree must also submit
official documents for their master's degree. If we do not receive your complete academic record, you will
not be able to enroll for courses. If you have any questions regarding what materials are missing or how to
establish proof of degree, you may contact [email protected].
Our faculty and staff are committed to helping you further your academic success. When you visit our
website, please be sure to view the list of the faculty members and their research interests. You are more
than welcome to contact any of us if we can be of assistance in helping you make the transition to UH.
Please let me know at your earliest convenience whether you will be coming to study with us. We hope you
decide to join us, and we look forward to hearing from you as to your plans. Feel free to contact me by e-
mail at [email protected] if you have questions. We are all looking forward to you joining us next fall
semester.
Sincerely,

P. Shiv Halasyamani, Ph.D.
