Hello.

I am Cindi SturtzSreetharan (the one with glasses in the picture) Professor of

Anthropology in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change. I do research on the
ways that people use language to do things like create or reject gendered identities. I have
also done research on body stigma and body shame specifically think about the ways that
everyday language shapes how we think about our bodies. I conduct my research in Japan
mainly but also have ongoing projects in the US. If you are interested in issues about
language and gender, I teach another class (ASB 380, Language, Culture, and Gender) that
covers these topics.

You can call me Cindi, Dr Sturtz, or Dr SturtzSreetharan. I respond to all happily.

And, you can email me at [email protected] to reach me directly.

I am happy to schedule Zoom video meetings for any students who would like to talk one on
one. If you are interested in career support or advice please make a time to talk.

I am the instructor of this course in Session B but the content was co-created with Dr Alex
Brewis Slade (the one with longer hair in the picture). And, it is her voice you will hear in
most of the video lectures. She and I collaborate often together both in teaching and in
research. For example, the picture of us was taken in Frankfurt, Germany, at the start of the
Study Abroad Course just a few weeks ago. We led ASU students on a 3 week food, culture,
and health tour that started in Frankfurt, Germany, stopped for a few weeks in Strasbourg,
France, and culminated in Paris, France. We recently wrote a book together (along with 3
other anthropologists) examining the lived experience of weight across four cultures (Japan,
Paraguay, Samoa and the US): Fat in Four Cultures

other anthropologists) called The Human Story

Dr Brewis has written something like 8 books and over 200 scientific articles. One recent
multi-prize-winning book is "Lazy, Crazy, and Disgusting: Stigma and the Undoing of
Global Health

book, she teaches another class (Poverty and Global Health, ASB 305) that is on this topic.

Alex was born in New Zealand, and received a PhD in anthropology from University of
Arizona (1992) and was an Andrew W Mellon Foundation postdoctoral fellow in
demography at Brown University. Before joining ASU in 2005, she taught at University of
Auckland and University of Georgia. As an administrator at ASU, she served as Director of
the School of Human Evolution and Social Change from 2010-17 and Associate Vice
President for Social Sciences from 2014-17.
