3.0 REFERENCES
3.1 Codes of Practice
The building was designed in accordance with the design requirements of
relevant government gazettes and latest relevant codes. The following is a list of
codes and standards proposed to be used in the checked of this project.
a) ACI 318M-19
b) IBC 2009
c) IRAQ SEISMIC CODE 20017
d) ASCE-16
3.2 SOIL DATA

4.0 DESIGN CRITERIA

4.1 LIST OF LOADS

DL: dead loads consisting of weight of the structure itself.
SDL : superimposed dead loads consisting of weight of all permanent
constructions ,including partition walls and weight of permanent
equipment.

5
L : live load due to intended use and occupancy , including loads due to
movable objects and movable partitions and loads temporarily supported
by the structure during maintenance.
4.2 Description of load
The structure will be controlled against construction loads.
4.2.1 Dead loads (D)
Dead weight of structural components is determined on the basis of
geometrical characteristics and material density.
The following unit masses will be used :
-reinforced concrete = 24 Kn/m3
-Waterproofing and roof insulation = 0.3 Kn/m2
- wall part ion = 7 Kn/m3
-Concrete pavers = 22 Kn/m3
-Mortar = 20 Kn/m3
-Plaster = 10 Kn/m3
-Rendering = 22 Kn/m3
-Tile = 24 Kn/m3
-False ceiling =0.3 Kn/m2
-Lightweight partition (per unit area of floor) = 1.0 Kn/m2
Roofing finishes:
-Paving tiles (50 mm) = 1.2 Kn/m2
-waterproofing membrane extruded polystyrene = 0.1 Kn/m2

6
-Earth fill = 20 Kn/m3

4.2.2 Live loads

The following distributed loads will be considered:
-Roofs:
Roofs = 1.50 Kn/m2
-Floors:
x classrooms = 2.0 Kn/m2
x Corridors = 4.8 Kn/m2
x Stairs = 5.0 Kn/m2
park =5.0 Kn/m2

7
4.3 COMBINATIONS OF LOADS
4.3.1 Loading combination for allowable stress design (ASCE 7-16
and IBC-09)
DL= Dead load , LL= Live Load
1. DL
2. DL+LL
3. 1.2DL+1.6LL

4.4 DESIGN ALLOWABLE AND MATERIAL CHARAACTERISTICS

4.1.1 Design allowable for concrete structure

Concrete grades:
FC= 40 Mpa (foundation ,columns, beams, slabs and shear walls)

4.1.2 Design allowable for reinforcing steel

-Yield stress =FY=420 Mpa

8
-Plain mild steel (if any) = 250 Mpa

5- STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS CRITERIA

5.1 Software:
Element Type Software Purpose Output
Foundation SAFE Design for shear and bending Required
moments reinforcement
Slab section SAFE Design for shear and bending Required
moments reinforcement
Column section PROKON Design for axial load and Required
bending moments reinforcement
Column punching Hand Design for punching Required
callcu. reinforcement slab
thic, column size
Shear wall section ETABS Design for axial load, shear Required
forces and bending moments reinforcement
Floor deflection SAFE Find the elastic and long-term Required slab sizes
deflection values with reinforcement
Analysis (static analysis) the structural model of building by use the following
programs
5.2 Modeling Requirements
- Lateral Loads : Buildings modeled using ETABS with the following assumptions:
Shear walls included no columns,
Rigid diaphragm at each level.
Support condition for foundation is spring.

Vertical Loads : Floors modeled in SAFE to assess the followings:

Bending moments and shear forces in slabs and beams
Elastic and long term deflection of slabs and beams
Long term deflection multiplier non leaner analysis
Vertical reaction and bending moments on columns

5.3 Skeleton of building consist of :-

9
x Slab thickness = 100 mm (see fig. below)
x Column = 250x700 mm ( see fig. below)
x Column = 700x700 mm ( see fig. below)
x Column =500x 500 mm (see fig. below)
x Walls =250 mm (see fig. below)

COLUMNS & WALL KEY PLAN

14
 Column size 700x700 mm
 λ=1,(normal concrete)
 Maximum column factored load (interior span)= 8244Kn, load case UDL.

Max reaction of column = 8244 KN (ultimate)

Dim. of this column = 700 x 700 mm
Raft thick. = 700 mm+DROP 700mm=1400mm
fc = 40 MPa
d =1400 -100 = 1300 mm
bo = (( 700+1300) +(700+1300))* 2= 8000 mm
ØVc = 0.75 *( (40)0.5 /3) * 8000 *1300 / 1000 = 16444 KN > 8244 KN
O.K.

Foundation thickness = 700 mm SAFE for punching shear

15
(B.C.) = 70 KN / m2 ,F.S = 3

∑Reactions of building = 94000KN from ( S.L)

Conc. Raft weight = 1400*0.7*24 = 23520 KN

Load on Raft = 1400*5 = 7000 KN

Total load = 124250 KN

Service stress on raft = 124250

Service stress on raft = 124250 / (1400)– ( γ s * H )

= (89 -17*3)KN / m2 =38KN / m2 < 70 KN / m2 (B.C.)

O.K.

-type of foundation: Raft foundation

Reinforcement foundation: According computer software( SAFE)analysis & design
Top reinforcement Use 20@200 mm(each way)
Bottom reinforcement Use 20@200 mm(each way)
