ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
1.1b Customized Learning Environments able to do by the end of this lesson:
Students build networks and customize their Students will be able to explain how rules are
learning environments in ways that support the made, why rules are made and why we should
learning process. follow rules. Students will also be able to support
the learning process by building and customizing
network types.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea
Students learning goal for this lesson is to be able to explain the why and what of rules. Students will
be able to demonstrate their understanding of the ISTE standard by designing a podcast relating to
the GA standard stated.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify / podcast

Description of Software: Spotify is a podcast directory. Which basically means that it is a place for
listeners to find what they are looking for. A podcast is a digital audio program consisting of a series
of audio episodes that you can download or stream from the internet. It works very much like a
radio show, but with one major difference. You can subscribe to a podcast and listen to it at any time
you want.

✘ Understanding ✘ Applying ✘ Creating

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

✘ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

✘ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation: This activity is called What and Why Rules? The teacher will first start
the lesson by connecting to the student’s prior knowledge of what they know about rules and why

students think we follow and should follow rules. The students will be given 2 minutes to answer this
question after time is over the teacher will have the students share out their answer with their peer.
The teacher will then have a class discussion about the students answer/reasonings. The teacher will
go over more information related to this topic. Then the teacher will introduce Spoitify.podcasters
explaining to the students what a podcast is and how the students can create one on their OWN.
Teacher will remind the students that podcast is AUDIO only. So, for this assignment the students
will only be able to use their voices. Students will need to explain how and why rules are made and
why rules should be followed. To make sure the students don’t astray away from their goals the
teacher will walk around assist and talk/guide the students. Students will use the classroom
laptops/iPad to complete the task. The teacher will conclude the lesson by having the students share
their podcast with the class and have the students write down 3-4 notes/facts they learned by other
students podcasts.

Managing student learning:

Using the software Spotify / podcast will cause a shift in student behavior going from passive
learning to active social learning. On almost an everyday daily basis students learning is more on the
passive side of spectrum it is important that teachers involve active learning into their lesson, so the
students learn through experimentation, creation and more (highest level of the Bloom’s Taxonomy
Level). By creating a podcast, the students are doing just this. They are experimenting and creating.
The students will be allowed to work with 1 partner to complete the task. To manage time
accordingly the students are given a partner to rely on if needed additional help. If both need help
students are allowed to walk to another group to guide them but if still need help the student can
come to me (the teacher, ask 3 before me).

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.

This activity is suitable for all students. Reason being that first, all students have a different learning
type (reading/writing, auditory, kinesthetic) creating a podcast helps the students whose learning
type is auditory. Second, this activity benefits students with a eyesight issue they can rely on simply
following along by hearing the podcast. Third, this activity vice versa also benefits those students
with a hearing disability because even though this is a podcast there is a written transcript provided
that the students can follow along by reading. Fourth, this activity benefits students/parents that
belong to a bilingual family because the transcript is provided in more than one language. This
supports the UDL principle of Representation offering information in more than one format.

Reflection:

This lesson will positively impact my students because they are learning through experimenting and
creating (highest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy Level). They are given a chance to actively work with
their peers and create through their findings. I look forward on implementing part of the lesson
where I introduce this software to the students. Because the students can not only can use this
software in my class but also use to it create their creations for other classes and for different types
