What I Need to Know
As we grow, there are several changes in our body. Now that you are in Grade 6
level or pre-adolescent stage, you can experience physical changes such as growth of
pubic, body and facial hair, changes in body shape and height and also your voice may
change.
The teenage years bring many changes. These are not only physical, but also
mental and social changes. During these years, teens become more able to think
abstractly. Over time, they can make plans and set long-term goals. But it is important to
remember that these changes will happen differently in each teen.
In this module, you will learn that there are issues and concerns you may
encounter as you experience physical changes in your body. With these common issues,
you tend to realize how self-management skills could help you to prevent illnesses.

As you go through to this module, you are expected to:


1. identify the physical body changes that lead to health issues;
2. enumerate, list, describes the personal health issues that are common to teenagers;
3. identify ways on how to manage personal health issues and concern;
4. Apply self-management skills in dealing with personal health issues and concerns.

What do you think is the problem with these two?


As we grow, aside from physical changes happen, physical health problems and
concerns develop in our body too. Body odor is one of them. This happens
because glands are activated by hormones that produce more oil during the teen
years, resulting in sweaty armpits and increased strong odor. There are many
more health issues during your age. These health problems are normal and it
happens to almost all of the teenagers. Try to name some of these problems.

What is It

Let’s go deeper, these are the health issues and concerns that young people
should attend to at this stage in their life.

1. Height and ⮚ Stunted Growth means the normal growth rate in

malnutrition in early childhood. The weight issues
of the children with stunted growth are
underweight and overweight. Underweight is too
low to be healthy and overweight increases body
weight in relation to height.

Children may experience this when they have a
bacterial infection caused by a common cold.

3. Vision ⮚ Astigmatism is a common eye condition


experienced by many young people. This condition
can be corrected by eyeglasses.

⮚ Myopia or nearsightedness is when the person
can see objects that are close but have problems
seeing objects that are far.
⮚ Hyperopia or farsightedness is when persons can
see objects that are far, but have difficulty
focusing on objects that are close.

4. Skin, hair and ⮚ Sunburn is caused when the skin is exposed to


nail the sun for a period of time. The skin burns, turns
red, and will be irritated.
⮚ Dandruff is marked by flaking or drying of the
skin on the scalp. It is itchy sometimes that’s why
it makes a person feel uncomfortable.
⮚ Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of
the skin on the hands and fingers and especially
on the toes and feet.
⮚ Ingrown toenail results when a nail is curved and
grows into the skin usually at the sides of the nail.
It is caused by improper trimming and improper
size of footwear.

5. Posture and ⮚ Scoliosis is the sideways curving of the spine.


Spine Disorder ⮚ Lordosis is a condition when the spine in the
lower back curved excessively.

6. Oral/Dental ⮚ Cavities occur as a result of tooth decay.


Problems ⮚ Gingivitis is a gum disease. The bacterial growth
in the mouth will cause destruction of the tissue
surrounding the teeth.
⮚ Malocclusion is another word for misalignment of
the teeth.
⮚ Halitosis or bad breath is caused by certain food
and poor dental and oral hygiene.

To prevent these common issues and concerns to your health, you need to
start developing your self-management skills. These are the things that you need
to remember:

1. Have proper nutrition.


2. Observe proper hygiene.
3. Have enough sleep and rest.
4. Take regular physical activity.
5. Take vitamins and minerals.
6. Observe good posture.
