Confucianism is a belief system that developed from the teaching of

Kongfuzi also known as Confucius and the writings of his followers. It was
estimated during the first half of the Chou Dynasty. This belief system
served as the foundation of the Chinese culture.

Before we proceed to our new lesson, let

us have a short recap of what you have learned
last time.
Do you still remember the meaning of
Buddhism, its founder and core teachings?

Bvbb Everyone of us has system that we believe

and serve as guide in our daily lives. The system
that we believe makes us what we are.

The Brief History

Confucianism is a belief system that developed from the teaching of the philosopher
Kongfuzi also known as Confucius and the writings of his followers. A belief system that
became the foundation of Chinese culture for almost 2500 years. It was estimated during
the first half of the Chou (or Zhou) Dynasty.
Confucianism is believed to have developed around 771-476 BC. It reached its peak
during the Qin (or Ch’in) Dynasty. It became the official ideology of the Chinese State during
the Qin Dynasty. It remained so until the stablishment of the Republic of China.
Confucianism also spread geographically to its neighboring East Asian countries
namely Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

1
The core teaching of Confucianism can be found in the nine ancient Chinese works,
divided into 5 classics and four books. The most famous of these writings is the Lun Yu,
(The Analects) or The book of Sayings.

Core Teachings
The basic and core teaching of Confucianism are the following:
1. Loyalty 4. Rituals
2. Goodness 5. Etiquette and
3. Filial piety 6. Proper governance

Fundamental Beliefs
Here under are the Confucianism’s fundamental beliefs:
A. Self-Cultivation of virtue
Every Confucian follower has to integrate the value of good manners and right conduct.

B. Maintenance of personal ethics and responsibilities.

Every right has a corresponding responsibilities. The higher the position, the
greater its responsibilities.

Confucianism Best Practices

They are known to their best practices such as:
1. Study or scholarly conduct 4. Promotion in government
2. Family oriented through excellence and
3. Self-discipline 5. Rituals through music

The Basic Doctrines of Confucianism.

1. The T"ien or T’ienming(Mandate of Heaven)
It is a belief that the power of the sovereign or the power of the ruler come from
heaven and must remain in it, for the ruler to stay in power. To remain under the
mandate of heaven a ruler must have the true virtues.
2. Human nature as originally good or evil
There are two schools of thought that emerged as the nature of man. One of
Confucius great follower, Menchius, teaches that man, originally is good and it is
only his environment that influences him to be bad. While another follower, Hsun-
tzu contented that man is born with an evil nature but it can be regenerated through
moral education.
3. Rectification of Names
This doctrine supports the teaching of Hsun-tzu that man is born with an evil
nature. It is in this doctrine why each person must exert all efforts to clean his name
so he can follow the Dao or the moral way.
4. The Dao, generally means road or path, the truth or moral teachings.
In Confucian teaching to follow the Dao or moral way is the correct and
ultimate goal of a person. Cultivating the Dao is called education. “If a man in the
morning hears the Dao, he may die in the afternoon without regret”.

5. Filial piety
In Confucian ethics, family is the most important group in the society and
devotion to family is a virtue that can strengthen the nation. Filial piety is an idea in
Confucianism that can be termed as “gradational love”. “Gradational love” is the affection
you show first for your own descendant or direct relatives before loving your neighbour or
anybody else. Confucius believes that a good family breeding naturally leads to good social
intercourse. It is a step-by step transformation . A good family makes a good clan, a good
clan makes a good community, and it goes on up to having a good state.

2
6. Ancestor worship
On ancestor worship, Confucius believe by respecting our ancestors, we
should not forget the experiences and learnings of those generations that came
before us so we can do things better than them.

Issues Related to Confucianism

A. Gender Inequality
Historically speaking, in the Confucian Role System, the husband and wife
relationship is viewed as between “unequals” as wife takes the domestic role. In
the composition of the Yang and Yin doctrine, the Yang is the head and the
powerful part which role is given to the husbands, while the Yin is the support
and weaker part which role is given to wife. However, once the Yin’s role or the
wife part is performed well, the Yin becomes equal to Yang as they are partners.

B. Authoritarianism
On the Confucian sponsorship of an authoritarian government, the sentiment
of Confucious gives evidence on being authoritative rather than authoritarian;
and the social order to which he aspired is one base on excellence rather than
on coercion.
