b) %of Admixture used = 0.7% by the weight of Cement
3 DESIGN CALCULATIONS :
3.1) TARGET MEAN STRENGTH = 25 Mpa (as per MoRT&H Table 1700/5)
3.2) SELECTION OF WATER-CEMENT RATIO
From Table 5 of IS 456, maximum water-cement ratio = 0.50
Based on experience, adopt water-cement ratio as 0.50
Hence O.K.
3.3) SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT
From Table 2 of IS 10262(2009), maximum water Content = 186 litre (For 25 to 50 mm slump range) for 20 mm aggregate
Estimated water content for that slump = 186 litre
As superplasticizer is used, the water content can be reduced up 20 percent and above.
Based on trials with superplasticiser, water content reduction of 27 percent has been achieved.
Hence, the arrived water content = 186 x 0.73 = 135.78 litre = 136 litre (say)
3.4) CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT
Water-cement ratio = 0.50
Cement content = 136/0.50 = 272.0 kg/m3
As per MoRT&H, minimum cement content for PCC work = 250kg/m3
272 kg/m3 > 250 kg/m3, hence, O.K.
3.5) PROPORATION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT
From Table 3 of IS 10262(2009), Volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm size aggregate
and fine aggregate (Zone-II) for water-cement ratio of 0.50 = 0.62.
In the present case water-cement ratio is 0.50, Therefore, Volume of coarse aggregate for the water-
cement ratio of 0.50 = 0.62.
Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate = 0.62 m3
Volume of fine aggregate content = 1 - 0.62 = 0.38 m3
3.6) MIX CALCULATIONS
The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows :
a) Volume of concrete = 1 m3
Mass of cement 1
b) Volume of cement = x
Specific gravity of cement 1000
272 1
= x
3.15 1000
= 0.086 m3
Mass of water 1
c) Volume of water = x
Specific gravity of water 1000
136 1
= x
1 1000
= 0.136 m3
Mass of admixture 1
d) Volume of admixture = x
Specific gravity of admixture 1000
(Superplasticiser @ 0.9 % 2.45 1
by mass of Cement) = x
1.18 1000
= 0.002 m3
e) Volume of all in aggregate(e) = [ a - (b + c + d)]
= 1 - (0.086 + 0.136 + 0.002)
= 0.776 m3
f) Mass of coarse aggregate = e x Volume of coarse aggregate x Specific gravity of coarse aggregate x 1000
= 0.776 x 0.62 x 2.921 x 1000
= 1405 kg ( e = Volume of all in aggregate)
Hence, 20 mm (60%) = 843 kg and 10 mm (40%) = 562 kg
g) Mass of fine aggregate = e x Volume of fine aggregate x Specific gravity of fine aggregate x 1000
= 0.776 x 0.38 x 2.580 x 1000
= 761 kg ( e = Volume of all in aggregate)

WATER (kg) CEMENT (kg) F.A. (kg) C.A. (kg)
136 272 761 1405
0.50 1 2.80 5.17
By considering water absorptions following adjustment are given below:-
20 mm C.A = (843 *1.50)/100 = 12.65
So actual weight of 20mm = 843 -12.65 = 830.35 Kg/m3
10 mm C.A = (562*1.62)/100 = 9.10
So actual weight of 10mm = 562 - 9.10 = 552.90 Kg/m3
Sand FA = (761*1.75)/100 = 13.32
So actual weight of sand = 761.0 - 13.32 = 747.68 Kg/m3
Corrected Water Required = 136.0 + 12.65 + 9.10 + 13.32 = 171.07 kg/m3
